Growing them, that is. Last year I planted 3 avacado pits, and they all sprouted. I put them out in the summer, and repotted them before I brought them in last fall. One is taller than I am and the others range from 2 1/2 to 4 feet tall. I pinched off the ends of teh branches to try to get them to branch out. It is working well! Now I need to know what to expect next. If I keep them indoors in winter and outside in summer, can I expect to eventually get any fruit from them? Will they ever get bushy? Maybe I am the only "nut" who tries to grow these things!

Well you need a male and a female plant. Also it will probably be at least 7 years after you planted it before it produces anything even with a male and female.

So how do I know what "sex" each of these is? I always thought if you had more than one, they would decide which was which!

I have no idea. Since we are in So Fla we have avocado groves near to us so it has not been a problem. Get huge crops of them every year on my tree.

I'm sorry, but this thread made me think of Snoopy's avocado experience LOL

We live in South Texas - and someone just gave us a pit - I'll have to get some more.. (Of course no problem eating them.. haha)

I wonder how male/female is determined...

:rotfl: Sorry...I couldn't help it! :rotfl: I didn't know that there is such thing! Well...you learn something new everyday! :)

Trees grown from the pits will tend to have smaller fruit (with larger pits) than those from grafted trees.
I have a black thumb but my dad grew one from a pit to a producing tree in 4 years. The tree is as straight as a telephone pole and just about as tall as he never topped it, just let it grow. This tree produces hundreds of fruits each year (about 250 this year!) and has a longer season than any of his grafted trees - it's still got edible fruit on it now when the others all dropped their last weeks ago.
I'm not sure how one would produce if kept in a pot but I do know that you will need to be careful when moving it as the wood is very soft and breaks easily.
