Anyone have exp. w/ male cat urinary blockage?

Our kitty had an issue (liver disease/didn't eat). We took him to the ER and were able to follow up and have our regular vet treat him for much much less.

This same kitty is also prone to crystals in his urine and UTI's. He's never had a blockage..but we do have to purchase fish-free cat food and he hasn't had a problem since.

HE is tube fed right now and much to my dismay there is fish in his food. He is on antibiotics probbaly for other reasons related to his present condition that shoudl help keep the crystals away.

I do think the foods for urinary problems are fish free. But not sure. We just go for what we can find without fish and was doing well with Whiskas until they added fish (ugghhh!) and then found something else to use instead.

Due to our vacation being so close and the fact that he will *fingers crossed* be newly recovered...we are boarding him so that he can have quick access to vet care should his condition worsen. We are using a pet sitter for the other kitties...but one visit per day isn't enough to assess his condition and to know if he is eating or not.

ETA: for cost comparison for our situation--the procedure for tube insertion, u/s and 2 days hospitalization would have been about $2000 or more at the ER. At his regular vet..his intial stuff was only $900.....he had one week of hospitalization this week due to getting worse as the tube was coming out. All told--we have spent way less through our regular vet..than the initial cost of care in the ER would have been. You can shop around for procedure costs.

Has anyone heard of a food called "Estes"? it reduces stones. My kitty will be on it for a month and then we will move to C/D. It's tough when one out of 5 cats requires a special diet.

It is tough. We actually have all our kitties eat the same way as there is little to do to control that the special diet cat doesn't eat what they are supposed to. My kitty is a social kitty and isolation works very poorly with him.
