Hi all and Happy Halloween!

Tonight while getting ready for trick-or-treating, my eldest DD was putting makeup on my other DD, Hayley, who is 9. All of a sudden she (eldest dd) called out for us to come quick. Hayley had fainted on her. When we got to her, her eyes were dialated and she said she couldn't see me!! It was the scariest thing I have ever seen. Luckily, at the same time, my SIL (who is an ER nurse) was arriving with my niece. My husband carried Hayley upstairs and put her on the couch and we elevated her legs. She complained that her stomach was upset, but she could see me.

After a short time, she started to look and feel better and has been fine since. My SIL suggested that we keep an eye on her and take her to be seen if this would happen again or if she has any other complaints, which she hasn't. I will make an appt with the Ped on monday, unless something else comes up...then I will just take her to the ER.

Has anyone else dealt wih anything like this is a child? I have a heart arrhythmia, which has caused me to faint, so I guess part of me is concerned that she could have a similar problem. But that could be a longshot. I just cannot think of any reason why this would happen. She didn't eat anything new, no fever, hasn't been sick recently...no other symptoms. It is just weird. And I am a bit freaked out by it.

Any advice or similar experiences?
Thanks,
wendy

My DS used to pass out when he was younger!

Sometimes when he got hurt he would start crying and running to me he would start hyperventlating and down he would go

He scared the life out of me the first time he did it!

Our DD, Natalie, somwhat older than your Hayley, at 22, had several fainting spells a year or so ago. We had her checked by her internist, then a cardiologist. She did the 24 monitor thing and some pretty extensive tests at the hospital. Docs came back with one of those 'shoulder shrugs', 'not sure, but she seems okay'. She has been fine as far as I know since then.

Sure hope your Hayley is okay, nothing but an isolated fainting spell kids sometimes have. But yes, do call doc on Monday. My best.

I'll bet...I now know the feeling, it is unsettling to say the least!

Thanks Dan, glad to hear Natalie is doing better. Fainting is such a weird thing. It can be a symptom of a problem or it can be isolated, like you said.
I will feel better after having her doctor take a look.

My oldest DD was like momsal's DS. When she was pretty young she'd forget to breathe when she got mad and pass out. Had a seizure at her daycare one day when she was 11months old. They did several tests (CAT scan & EEG) and didnt' find anything wrong, I also researched and found the same thing the drs said. Lots of kids hold their breathe when they start to cry, some pass out and a even smaller percentage of those have seizures. Of course mine was in the small percentage...

It lasted about 6 months, she had a couple more seizures and had a few times where she'd pass out but she did grow out of it. I don't think it would ever be easy even when the drs were saying it was nothing it was still very scary and weird.

I hope they can find some answers quickly for you, I'll keep her in my thoughts.

It was a hot summer day and he hadn't eaten any breakfast (we all woke up late and it was an early game. And he didn't drink the water he had taken with him. Of course when this happened I'm on the other side of the field trying to keep my 3 other kids out of the sun & somewhat cooler. Luckily one of the coaches & parents were EMT's. They knew right away what to do and we figured out he was dehydrated. I made sure he had allot of fluids the rest of the day & stayed in the cool A/C. He hasn't had any episodes since.

It's easy to forget to eat or drink when there's so much going on. Try compounding the issue by having to keep track of several other people besides yourself. I would probably still check with the ped but hopefully she was just dehydrated.

<<<<<hugs to you both>>>>>>>

When I was 11 or 12 I fainted in front of my mother. I had just taken a really hot shower and my mother was trimming my hair in the bathroom afterwards. I guess I was overheated from the shower and the standing still in the steamy bathroom while she trimmed my bangs. I blacked out and collapsed. On another occasion I almost fainted at my confirmation. I had formal wear under my confirmation outfit and it was really warm in the church. I got that weird ringing in my ears but managed to get through it. I was definitely too hot.

I wouldn't worry yourself too much. It could be any number of things: from being overheated to dehydration, to not having eaten enough or having had too many sweets.

DS was 5 when he came down from his bedroom complaining of a tummy ache. He then collapsed right on top of me. Freaked me right out, his eyes rolled back and his legs shook a bit. When he woke up he was so out of it. Took him to the ER seemed fine went to his pediatrician...had an EEG, and sent to a neurologist. Everything came back fine. They're still not sure if he fainted or had some type of seizure...but they said it happens to kids sometimes for no apparent reason...and will probably never happen again...and 5 years later it hasn't. Call the doctor on Monday just to be sure. Best of luck.

My fainting spells were ( and still are!) triggered by the sight of blood, something painful or even the mere thought of something gory. In the 6th grade we were in history class talking about arrows. Next thing I knew there was a beautiful sunset in front of me and I was on the beach.....but wait why is someone shaking my arm and calling the teacher? I had slid almost under my desk in an out cold faint! Totally embarrassing.

Of course I was put through all the tests that there were to run at the time, and nothing was found.

I still have that same reaction and need to be careful what I watch or in some cases even think about. My Dr. seems to feel that I get so upset that my blood pressure drops dramatically and that is what causes it. it can be REALLY embarrassing though...like when a scene in a movie catches me off guard and I am in the middle of the aisle and can't get out and need to close my eyes and sing songs in my head and not look until someone next to me tells me it is okay...you get the idea...LOL

My 16 yo dd passred out this summer while we were at WDW! We was in our camper at Ft Wilderness. She did have a pretty big bite (not sure what it was from) on her face. She was looking at in the mirror, and all of the sudden she fainted. That was scary!
And when the paramedics came it was pretty hard squeezing them in our little camper! Everything was fine and we even ended up going to MGM later that day. We'll never forget that day!

I have a daughter who did that as a child and as an adult when in tight situations or something threatening to her physically or the site of the blood.. she is out.... it is called a vasal vagal reaction.. it just happened recently with an eye test..

Maybe with the makeup being put on and she felt closed in.. who knows, I would consult my doctor... Good luck.

Thanks for all of the replies, it makes me feel better knowing you all had similar experiences without a horrible outcomes, LOL.

my sister has vasovagel that's when you faint at seeing or thinking about large amounts of blood. she just sometimes faints when she she's gory movies. But she's started to grow out of it. :jumping1:

DD (7) just passed (syncope) out last Friday night while I was getting her ready for her school Halloween party. I am a RN and it freaked me out to see her eyes roll back!!

I placed her head between her knees and she came to. She was white as a ghost. She had also complained of a stomach ache and feeling dizzy. This also happened to her last summer due to heat!!

She had a full cardiac work-up last fall and everything was normal. I did not contact the dr. on this on as she is doing fine and has not had any similiar incidents or pre-syncopal symptoms since. I did however make note of the incident in case I need it for future references.

My older DD also had this happen when she was 7 too. She was shown to have an "extra" heartbeat which the cardiologist said she would out grow. She is now 12 and has not had any incidents since she was 8!!

I, myself, have passed out numerous times. Last time was at Rainforest Cafe in DTD!! More embarrassing than anything.......just a vaso-vagal response!!!

hope all goes well.................it is more scarey for us parents than for the kids!!

DD's friend started having fainting spells around the age of 7 and doctors dtermined she had low blood sugar. Once, while with us at an amusement park (she was 12) - she pased out in a ride line. Scared the beejus out of us. DH ran and got her food and a drink and she perked right back up.

DD has fainted twice - after a nasty fall at gymnastics where she landed on her head - the fainting came about a week after the accident.

When I was a nanny, my little girl fainted, or as she described it "disappeared" when she was 7 right after soccer practice. Took her to the Ped and she had strep and scarlet fever! No symptoms, not even a sore throat or temp. 10 days on amoxy and she was fine. It might not be a bad idea to take her to the doc, tho your SIL probably did a good job checking her out.

DD, 14 tends to have very low blood pressure. When she was 12 she started having fainting episodes daily. She went through all kinds of medical tests. What works best for her is drinking lots of Gatorade. The sodium in the Gatorade keeps her blood pressure up and that "keeps her on her feet." Her pediatrician originally prescribed a steroid, but said to try the Gatorade. It works great.

I used to faint from age 10 to about 20! I had tests run twice but nothing ever came up. Whenever I would hurt myself (get bumped into a wall, fall down and whap my "funny bone", etc.) I'd have to sit a while or I'd faint. The last time I was at an outdoor concert with DH (then boyfriend) and got faint in the line for the portapotty--said I had to sit down--he said I couldn't--so I fainted and knocked 3 other people over. It was the heat. (no drinking).
I fainted with my eyes open too.
I grew out of it, but as I've said, my doctor ruled a few things out before just saying I would grow out of it!

I fainted several times as a child and teenager and was diagnosed with hypoglycemia. It has only happened a few times as an adult. I hit my head a few times and then knew to sit down when I felt it coming on.

Hi! I am sure that you must have been terrified. Definitely not the way that you want to spend Halloween. I also have a heart arrythmia that can cause fainting. I would make sure that you mention your condition to the doctor. It is probably not connected but I do know that my cardiologist has said that there is a 50% chance that any of my children will inherit my particular condition. Who knew that it would be so frightening to be a mother? Good luck with your appointment and try to keep positive!
