My husband has had a terrible - just awful - rash for over a month. The dermatologist did a biopsy & they determined it was Dermatitus. Does anyone have experience with this in adults? How do you get rid of this? How long does it take to get it to go away? It is the worst on his hands & wrists....

Any information would be appreciated - he is just so embarrassed about this (can't hide your hands) and with all of the Holiday Parties coming up.....I feel so bad for him!

Tell me about it, I might know something about it.

Well, it is all over his body. Especially bad on his hands & wrists. It started as small dots & is now large patches of very red angry skin. Before the biopsy, they thought it may be Psoriasis or Lichen Planus & they prescribed a topical steriod cream (it was only a few dots on his wrists then) .....he was most definitely allergic to the steriod cream & the rash just took off wildly (this was almost a month ago). It is very itchy & sometimes painful ....a few of his fingernails are also affected (looks like a fungus, but is not)

Is it just dots, or is it blisters?

It started as dots.......now it looks kinda like pimples in some areas & looks almost like blisters on his hands (patches of thick, raised, red, rash - he says it is very itchy)

I have to go, but I do know something about that. I'll give you some info in about 2 hours. :)

DD and I have Excema and I have it particularly bad on my hands. I get the small dots, I call them eruptions, and they can be very painful, especially on the joints. I use Elocon, which is a steriodial cream. I didn't want to use steriods on my young DD, tho because the long term effects are not great. During this last flare-up, our doc gave us a new cream called Elodel. It is non-steroidal and works great. I read the entire insert and I really like it because it does not metabolize or build-up in the blood stream. I would suggest getting a cream like this (there is another my doc says), putting it thickly on his hands and then wearing cotton gloves to bed. I do this when I have bad flare up and it really works. My DH always teases me about being so "formal" when we go to bed, but it helps! Another tip is to moisturize, moisturize, moisturize! We have bottles of lotion all over the house. Cetaphil is really good because it is specifically made for sensitive skin.

I hope this info helps!

Also use only DOVE soap to shower with. It is the only commercial brand I can use other than the more expensive Basis soap. I kept telling my friend to switch for her dds who had it bad on their legs. She finally did and told me that their excema cleared up (the horrible redness) in 2 weeks.
The blisters can be fungal, I have had that happen. They will be clear blisters, VERY itchy, they erupt and then spread. I went to a good dermatologist and he helped explain alot to me.
Excema can also be the result of an allergy. Do you have something new in your home that could have triggered it? A Christmas tree or new detergent, perhaps?
Good Luck and try things till you find one that works.

I have dermatitis on my face. My Doctor prescribed a month-long treatment with the anti-biotic "Erythromycin." I'm just finishing a month on it, when I look in the mirror, the dermatitis is back!!! I don't want to see what I will look like when I no longer take the med.
