FH and I have a week long vacation coming up. We plan on getting work done around the house (we are currently remodeling the bathroom). But I was wondering if anyone had suggestions for any short (possibly cheap?) trips that we can take to actually have a "vacation". We live in the center of Connecticut and I would think the longest we would like to drive would be about 10-12 hours (no disney  ).

I am open to anything.
TIA! :thumbsup2

Baltimore or Washington DC. Or do you prefer somewhere cooler? Poconos?? Or head north.

Take a look at Travelzoo. They might have something.

Does anyone have any winery (sp?) suggestions for New England/New York areas? :confused3

My parents, aunt and uncle went to the finger lakes a few years ago to visit wineries. I have no clue where they went but they want to go back again sometime. Maybe this will help... http://www.fingerlakes.org/wine.htm

As for other ideas...Dh and I love to visit Toronto. They have all sorts of stuff to do and we feel like it's a really clean, welcoming city.

How about some hiking through the White Mountains? OR Watkins Glen in New York has winery tours. It also has a gorge to hike through that is neat. In nearby Corning there is the Corning Glass Museum (sound dorky but a great museum to visit).

KarenB and Megan have the right ticket. Watkins Glen (Finger Lakes) region of NY would be perfect for you. Do a Google on the area and you are sure to find something. Just don't go during NASCAR weekend on August 11-14. It get's a little crowded.

Gigantor, would much of the crowds be coming in before the 11th? We'll be in the Finger Lakes area Aug. 4-11.

Corning Glass and hiking Watkins Glen are already on our list of things to do, also the science museum in Ithaca. Any other good activities for a family of 4 (girl 9, boy 7)?
