I read this on another forum, and I thought I'd pass it along. The first generation iPod Nano is having some type of overheating problem, and Apple is issuing replacements.

I'm also copying and pasting what was written there.

iPod Nano 1st generation Replacement!
Just got an Email from Apple--a big surprise since I haven't purchased any apple product since 05. It turns out that there might be a defect in the battery where it could overheat and catch on fire. You can send it in for a replacement--not sure what kind of Generation you'll get though, but you might get something better? First gen was 2gb and 4gb. I think the minimum hdd storage for the current iPod nanos is now is 8gb?

Attached below is the email I got:

Dear iPod nano owner,

Apple has determined that, in very rare cases, the battery in the iPod nano (1st generation) may overheat and pose a safety risk. Affected iPod nanos were sold between September 2005 and December 2006.

This issue has been traced to a single battery supplier that produced batteries with a manufacturing defect. While the possibility of an incident is rare, the likelihood increases as the battery ages.

Apple recommends that you stop using your iPod nano (1st gen) and follow the process noted below to order a replacement unit, free of charge.

Note: This battery issue is specific to the iPod nano (1st gen) and does not affect any other iPod.

Replacement Process

You may order a replacement unit via the web. Click here to begin.

Your iPod nano serial number will be checked to verify that it is eligible for this program. You will receive a replacement unit approximately 6 weeks after we receive your current iPod nano (1st gen).

If you have a personalized iPod nano, you will receive a non-personalized replacement. Make sure to use iTunes to back up any data on your current iPod nano before sending it in for a replacement unit.

Additional Information

Identifying an iPod nano (1st gen):

•

It has a black or white plastic front and a silver metal back - later iPod nano models have a metal front and back.

If you need assistance with placing an order, please visit an Apple Retail Store or an Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP) and bring your iPod nano with you for serial number validation.

Your replacement iPod product is warranted to be free from defects for 90 days from the date of service.

Thank you for participating in this program.

Sincerely,

Apple

I got this email. It will be interesting to see what they send back to us as a replacement.

I agree we have one of those too. Wondering what we'll get in exchange?

I agree! I have two - one that wouldn't work but I never throw away electronics (thank goodness I'm a packrat!)

It would be nice if they would immediately tell you if the serial number is a valid one or not.... I guess if they aren't applicable you'll get an email

I have one of the first generation ones but I like it better than my later generation ones. I'm getting a touch for Christmas. I think I will just hang onto it for posterity sake.

Thanks so much!!! DD17 has one - she got it Christmas 2005 so I assume it's the 1st? It's a white plastic front so I would guess it qualifies. She had given it to DD11 last year so DD11 is excited about possibly getting a new ipod.

Does anyone know if you can definitely exchange at the store? We have one close by that would be quicker than mailing it back.

I have one but I haven't gotten an email yet. :confused3

My mom's got one as well and she DID get an email. I know I got mine for Christmas... I just can't remember the year. When were they first released?

Someone posted this link to an article about it. Looks like you will be receiving another 1st generation ipod nano. I'm fine with that! According to the article, these were released Sept 2005 to December 2006.

I did get the email from them confirming the packaging is being mailed... the fine print makes me nervous however... It states you could incur up to $100 in diagnostic fees if they determine it doesn't need the required service??? If it's the case that they are only determining if it's one to be replaced THAT way, they'll have a lot of unhappy customers unwilling to pay that fee. I hope that's just fine print that shows up on every mail-out repair service....

I had three of these and when I put the serial number in they came back as included. Initially I put a number in incorrectly and it said that model was not included. I never got an email informing me of the recall though I bought all 3 from Apple directly.

Well I feel better knowing they are replacing with first generation. Does anyone know if they are sending refurbished ones or new ones? I did check and mine is part of the recall.

Thanks for posting, OP! I was not aware of the recall until I saw this.

Really? I was hoping for the current generation. I'm surprised they have this much of a surplus of 7 year old technology sitting around. Bet the boxes will be dusty!;)

Thanks for posting this! I checked and mine qualifies. It will be interesting to see if they send out all 1st generations because as a PP said -do they have a lot of these still lying around?

This!! I'm surprised they have THAT much as well (especially that many versions of the ones that DON'T catch on fire).

Just registered mine (even though I never got an email) & it says they're sending me out a box.

I'll be happy with whatever I get... my 2yo DD uses this nano (I got a newer generation) and it worries me that it could possibly catch on fire!!

Mine has sat unused on my desk for at least a year. I had given it to my husband as a backup for just music(he uses his touch for work, diagnosis apps). Spoke with someone at our Apple service center (not an Apple store, however) and he said he'd be surprised if they replace with Gen 1 since its been so long. Anything is appreciated after all this time!

Truly, I love my first gen. We have many later gen ones in our household. But my newer one is the one (I think 4th but not sure) that doesn't feed into my car audio. It's a known problem with whatever gen it is. Mt first gen doesn't have this prob. So yes, I'm incredibly happy with replacing first with first.

I'll take a 1st gen that works. Mine has been inoperable for a couple of years,
Thanks to OP!

Thanks to the OP for this thread. I never received an email, but my email address has changed since I registered the iPod. Apparently, my iPod's serial number is on the list. My screen and case is a bit scuffed and dull, plus the battery discharges way too quickly. If they replace it with a new 1st Gen, that'll be fine since it'll have a brand-new battery that works right.

My husband gave me the 1st generation one and then a few years later, the 4th generation. I gave him my old one. He tried this last night and he qualifies. We're curious as to what the replacement will be as well. The downside is that my 1st generation has my nickname engraved on the back. We're going to lose that with the replacement.
