Anyone have an area rug under kitchen table?

I really want an area rug under my kitchen table, but I'm not sure what a good material is that's easy to clean. I have two little boys so there's no way to avoid spills and messes. The rugs that I'm liking so far are made from cotton and jute. Any experience with this?

I've been wondering the same thing, especially since I just got the newest Pottery Barn catalog and their fringed jute rug is in the Sale by Mail section, for $100 off what it is normally in the size I need.

I always wanted one too, but DH thought it wasn't a good idea because of the kids. We really avoided all rugs in the house until I got my Dyson vacuum because of the shedding dogs we've had. What I would like to do is make a canvas floorcloth. Yeah, that'll happen. Still...I'd like to.

We visited colleges this past week, and I was surprised to see a carpeted dining hall.

I just got the catalog today. I like the jute rug, but they don't have a color I want. I want red, so I'm looking at the cotton striped one that's just below the jute in the catalog.

I've been wondering this question too. I've also been wondering how large of a run you should buy. Should it be big enough for the chairs fit on the rug while everyone is seated or just big enough to fit the table and chairs while the chairs are tucked under the table?

siouxi31, I'm going to get an 8x10' rug. My table is 36x54" (or 54"square with the leaf). I'm figuring about 2' per side, for the rug to extend beyond the table.

I have a rug under my kitchen table with DS5, DS2, DS5 months. I'm not sure what the material is, it's just your typical area rug and I have no problems. Thw worst is when milk is spilled; have to be on top of that one right away. It's dark in color though so it won't show stains...

i have one under my table too and yes i made sure that the chairs could be pulled out onto the rug....mine seems to be kinda like a looped berber...i got mine at lowes..i love it !!!

I have a wool hooked rug in green for under my table. I think it is a 9 x 12. While I love the look, it is terrible to clean and it now has many stains on it. Also, my dog decided to chew on it and some of the carpet loops have come undone. :(

Here is a picture of the style I have.

I think I need to get rid of it soon which makes me sad b/c it makes the room. Anyways, I'm looking into getting a berber carpet remnant. My mom has one for her kitchen and it is so durable and great with cleaning stains.

Good luck to you!! pixiedust:

I have one, and it needs to be replaced. My MIL's dog evacuated to our house with her back in September, and she was one nervous nelly.
Not sure how many times she threw up on my rug.

I like to buy inexpensive ones and replace often.

Next time I am going to get a larger one to make sure all the chairs fit.

I have been wanting one for a LONG time. I got this catalog in the mail the other day, and they have 33 different styles of "outdoor rugs" that are also designed to be used under kitchen tables. They are stain resistant, mildew resistant, and to clean them you just take them outside, hose them off and let them dry. Some of them are REALLY beatiful (and pretty inexpensive).

Here's the link:

just remember...this is page 1 of 5!!!

Here's one more that doesn't show up on that page.

I'm just curious as to why one might want a rug under the kitchen table. Is it for the look or is there a functional reason for this. We will be putting hardwood floors in the townhouse we are getting built and I might be interested in doing something like that.

I think a rug under the table on hardwood floors is a good idea. The sticky floor protectors I used on the bottom of my chair legs sometimes come off, and the rug protects the floor from scratches.

Different story over ceramic tile. It is more for looks and possibly warmth during the winter.

Icebrat - we have wood floors and they are taking a beating in the breakfast nook with the chairs - even tho we put these non-scratch things on the bottom of the legs. And the kids with all the food that ends up on the floors - amazing anything ends up inside them.

I'd love a rug, but it's still much easier to clean everything off the wood floor. I like the idea of the outdoor rugs that can be hosed off. But we have a small space and I would need a square rug for it to fit. I guess I could get a round one, but I'm worried about how it would look.

Anywho, the family room area rug is cheap with a busy pattern on it - key for hiding stains. If you can't get an outdoor rug, make sure you get one that is either dark or has a busy pattern.

I think a rug really defines the space too and finishes the decorating of the area.

Thanks for answering, I never would've thought chairs would've scratched the floor. Thanks, now I have a reason to buy a new rug :)

Chairs are horrible on floors!

This past year, we turned every piece of furniture over and put pads on the bottoms because they were ruining our hardwoods.

We have a nice rug from Pier1 in our living room.

I'm not altogether sure I would put a rug underneath my kitchen table. My kids are just horribly messy and I have to sweep in the kitchen at least once a day. I can only imagine what the rug would look like!
