Apparently once you are subscirbed to AOL, you can never leave. DH keeps trying ...and they keep charging us. Just 2 weeks ago he got a "supervisor" who swore up and down he was cancelled. He should have gotten that in writing of course. Yesterday in the mail he gets a letter saying THANK YOU FOR CONTINUING YOUR SERVICE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

He is now sending letters to Better Business Bureau, Atty General, etc. We found lots of similar complaints online.

I am cancelled as of this weekend. So I should have one more "bill" and that should be it. I got a notice from them confirming my cancellation and encouraging me to come back. I'll let you know if I have any problems (you'll see me ranting away!)

This is a huge problem for aol. They always do things like that. I tried to cancell my own service, even after assuring them that i was still a customer simply because DH has an aol acct. The only way to cancel I found was to stop the automatic payments going out to them every month. That was really easy since i cancelled my bank account. They haven't yet sent me a final bill. Though I'm willing to pay if they send it.

Their reps are all the time doing things like you describe. Telling the customer they are cancelled and then filling out a sheet which tells management that they talked the customer into staying. Hence your TY for staying letter.

So my advice is to shut down their payment source, whether it comes from your bank acct. or a charge card. Good luck.

We had absolutely NO PROBLEM at all cancelling our AOL service. We had it for over 5 years and switched to Earthlink.

When we called AOL, they cancelled the service, but told us that we would still have it for another few weeks, as we were in the middle of our billing cycle. They gave us a date that it would stop and followed up with a confirmation letter.

Then, our DD18, forgot to copy her Buddy List before the AOL stopped, and we had to call AOL back and ask what to do? They said they would reinstate our service, our DD could get her Buddy List, and then we were to call AOL back and cancel it again, so we wouldn't get charged for another month.

They were fine about everything and we had no problems. So sorry that you and others did...

This is what you have to do to:

Call them and cancel your servive. Get a confirmation number of some sort to prove you called and canceled. Do not hang up the phone with out a confimration number. Get the name of the person you speak to and ask them to send you a letter acknowledging that you have canceled.

Then, do like another poster said and cancel their payment source, either change the card number or close the account. But beware, they will continue to charge you and about 3 - 4 months later youll get a bill for the full 3 - 4 months you have not been using the service. When you call they will have no record of your canceling the service and that is when you get out your letter (if they send one and your confirmation number).

This is not only a problem with AOL but with MSN and compuserver...it is such a pain!

Good Luck!

eek! Thanks for the warning everyone. I need to call soon and cancel the free 45/60 day service I have. I think I'll start now.

My sister had a problem canceling her AOL, and she finally figured out what the problem was. She called and cancelled, and of course, they said it would be a few days before her service was actually cancelled. My sister is the kind of person who wants to squeeze every bit of value out of things she pays for, so every few days, she would log on, and if it worked, she would use the account.

Apparently, there is something in the fine print when you sign up that says that your account isn't actually cancelled when you cancel the service. In other words, it's several months before anyone else can take your old user ID. If you log in with your old user name and password, it lets you in and you're automatically reinstated. So if you try to log in to see if you still have an account, you will never actually close the account.

I am glad it wasn't just me. It took a month of faxes, phone calls and letters to finally get my account closed. I got my letter on Friday. We have an email only account that we have had for 10 years and I thought I would try the wonderful 9.0 BIG MISTAKE!! I hated it and then I couldn't get rid of it!!!

Whoa! I just called today to cancel. Hmmm, I wonder if I'm going to have problems? Gosh, I hope not. Maybe I should call back again and make sure it's done? I got the gal's name, but that's it. Stuff like this just irks me...people get so taken advantage of!

9.0 is REALLY BAD!!! I've tried to get it off my computer to but can't. Did you ever get it off and if so, what did you do to get rid of it?
