My DD (13) came down with this cough almost 2 1/2 weeks ago. No other cold symptoms, no fever, no stuffy nose, etc . . .I've exhausted Robitussin DM because it doesn't help her. I've tried Vicks with the same results.

I took her to the doc on Monday and her lungs check out fine, no pnemonia, no bronchitis . . .doc prescribed Benzonatate which is like a numbing agent for her throat . . .she's started taking that and there hasn't been much of an improvement . . .It says to take 1 pill every 8 hours . . .I know I should give it more time . . .I just assumed it would be getting better by now . . .

Any advice?

Try the Triaminic patches for coughing. There's another company that makes them as well. Works everytime for my dds. My pediatrician also recommend karo or maple syrup to coat the throat. Tried that once, seemed to help as well.

My DD has a bad cough right now too.

At night, when the coughing seems to get worse, I use Vicks Vapor Rub on her chest. It seems to loosen up the cough and ease the tightness in her chest.

Is it a dry cough? Could be allergies.

Not like a dry hacking cough . . .more like an irritated throat cough . . .if that makes any difference . . .she's not usually prone to any allergies . . .but I guess its possible . . .

Another thought..Did they check her ears? My one dd always gets that same type of cough when she has fluid in her ears. One of the only ways I know to check for an ear infection - never has a fever, or pain.

Yep, she was completely checked out . . .doc couldn't find anything.

Hopefully it'll be gone soon . . .

I don't have any ideas for a remedy, but maybe some hot lemonade would at least soothe it and maybe help to heal the "raw" throat feeling.

Put about 2 tablespoons of fresh squeezed lemon juice, and a couple tablespoons of sugar (or to taste, when my Aunt first made this for me, it was a little too sweet) in a coffee mug, fill it with water, and microwave it (or you could add boiling water).

I hope she gets over the cough soon, I know how annoying it can be to have a symptomless cough.

I have a chronic cough and use vitamin C drops - you can get generic ones from Target for cheap, or you can get some other ones - citrus flavored is the best. They are like cough drops, but not. They really seem to help me out. I get it especially bad at night. I was on allergy meds and they made me worse.
Good luck!!!

OK...........here's what we do............throw away all those medicines & go get yourself some lemon juice.........can be bottled or fresh & get some honey.........

Now.........put about 2 to 3 teaspoons of lemon juice in a shot glass or something similar that can be microwaved & add to that a good teaspoon of honey.........warm it in the microwave for a few seconds just till the honey is melted & stir through.......drink it down & repeat this morning & night & even after school as well......may take up to 4 days to see some results, but it works.. & better still it's cheap:D

Good luck.......;)

You forgot the liquor Nutsy!!......isn't that a "hot toddy"???????????

Hey Lisa..............this is for a kid:Pinkbounc :bounce:

Liquor is good & it knocks you out too, but somehow I don't think it's quite what is needed here:teeth: :teeth: :sunny:

I "know" my mom put a bit of the "hard stuff" in when I was younger...maybe it was to really "make me sleep":p :p

Oh very funny Jason............................

Perhaps you should try it first to see if it works & then you can tell all:Pinkbounc :bounce:

Sucking on candy canes or lollipops/suckers often stops the coughing for at least as long as the candy is in your mouth. Not a real "long term" result but it can help give a little relief sometimes.
