Just took ds 14 to the immunologist. They did another pulmonary function test and finally have decided to decrease his advair from the middle dose, to the lowest dose. Dh went with me this time and questioned the ped. at the annual physical also. It did not help that these 2 drs. are friends etc. But we insisted they start lowering it since he has been on it since it came out, like 3 years and we feel its messing up his development etc. So just want to know if anyone has experienced this, did your child come off it altogether, they want to retest him again in 2 months etc. I have to watch the symptons if he gets worse. etc. Thanks for any info.

I do not have a child that is taking this medicine, but I take it. I started out with 250 and then after a year with no asthma attacks, it was lowered to 100. My worst times are in the late fall and early spring, the dosage is usually adjusted at that time since I find I am having trouble breathing.

My DD is one it and has her ped has lowered it when she's not having any symptoms. She says there is no reason for more meds than they need and I agree. I do tend to vary it some myself since we have inhalers with 250 or 100 dosage. If she starts getting a little wheezy I have her use the higher dose. The dr suggested it once but I admit I've done it without asking since.

DS age 9 has been on it for about 4 years - also takes Singular on a daily basis. Was originally on the 100 dosage. After two hospital stays was bumped up to the middle dosage (250?). Did great for a year so we (pediatrician and I) tried to wean him off of medications - ended up back in hospital. We have settled now on 5 mg Singular and 100 dosage of Advair and have not visited the hospital in almost 2 years!

I believe the lowest possible dose is always the best. You might find that certain times of the year you need the stronger dose (for us, for some strange reason, it is May that hits DS the worst).

DD9 uses Advair and Singulair. She takes the 100/50 June, July, August. Then during the school year she gets bumped up to the 250/50 dosage. It seemed that when she was on the lower dose in the colder months she would get more flare-ups. During the warmer months we can back her down.

I prescribe a lot of Advair. It has been a wonderful drug for my asthmatic patients, kids and adults. I agree that you should use the lowest dose that works but certainly don't hesitate to increase the dose if the symptoms warrant.

Not sure what the OP means about "messing up his development" but the product has had a great safety record and I don't think there has been any data documenting growth suppression but I'd have to do some research to confirm that.
