Anyone have a Beagle?

I have a question on why you would say you have to keep his barking to a minimum because of "rather unpleasant neighbors"?

Is it because they don't like the dog barking, or some other reason? If it is the dog barking, continuous dog barking is so annoying, my neighbors have a dog that barks day and night, I have spoken to them and nothing has been done, so I contacted animal control six months ago and they were threatened with a fine the next time they were contacted and still nothing has changed. So I’m going to talk to them one more time before I contact animal control again. I guess this makes me an unpleasant neighbor, but then so are they because I can’t sleep in, I can’t have my back door open, I can’t go into my own back yard, ever!

They were really surprised I had a problem with the barking since I have a beagle, (they have two basset hounds and one little yippy barking dog, one basset hound does the majority of the barking), thank goodness my beagle isn’t a barker, but when she does bark I call her in immediately.

I'm not trying to be sarcastic, I'm just wondering.

No, they are just unpleasant neighbors. I don't want to hear a dog bark either, but they do bark. And it used to be so bad that the moment my dog walked outside the police were called, and the ASPCA saying I was abusing my dog. My surrounding neighbors were finally questioned because by the 5th time the police and the ASPCA had enough. The neighbors that kept calling left their name the last time, and that is when DH and I pressed harrassment charges on them. We would have knocks at the door at 3 in the morning because of a dog barking, that was not ours. My entire house was asleep at that time. Honestly, I don't even know if there was a dog barking at that time. So my surrounding neighbors that are directly on each side, and right behind us, all went to bat for us, and we don't know all of them either. This particular neighbor was diagonally behind us, if that makes any sense. So with my dog, I would keep his barking to a minimum, and once he barked he would be brought inside. Because this didn't stop until they moved. We agreed to drop the harrassment charges because it did stop for a while, and then went right back to the same old, but their house was for sale. Good thing is, I know all the township officers! And they know my exact street address now, and they won't be fumbling trying to find my house in the event I really need them.

I should also add that they called the police on me when my son was out in the pool with a friend of his in the afternoon and they were playing Marco Polo. Saying that I was having a party and serving alcohol to minors. My DS was 10 at the time. At that time I let the police in and even let them check my refrigerator. I have a dry house. There is no alcohol in the house. They even called the police on my contractor while my addition was being built because there was noise. It wasn't late or early, it was during regular work hours. So calling them rather unpleasant...is putting it nicely.

I know dogs bark, but this is ridiculous, he never stops, the only time they might tell him to stop is when they see me outside, other then that they don't. I just don't know what to do anymore, talking with them doesn't help, calling animal control six months ago did nothing to get them to stop, maybe a fine will, I don't know. I don't want them to have to get rid of their dogs cause I understand the love of animals but I should be able to live in peace and quite some of the time!

Jersey, I don't want to hijack your thread, but it's very interesting to me also. I noticed another common theme with beagles - they tend to have a long life expectancy. A quick web search showed that they tend to live 13-18 or more years! Several of us just on this thread have had beagles live to be 16 plus. Anyway, just an observation....definitely not a temporary pet!

Hijack away! That's a really interesting stat. We just lost our Scottie to cancer...she was only 8 and it was way too soon!

I've been looking on that pet finder site the past few days! I can't get myself away from that and the DIS.

Well, I did warn you that the next time you called the police, I was going to have a rip roaring party that lasts until the next day, and maybe even the day after that. If I'm getting accused of it, I might as well!

Oh and to not take this thread completely off topic, my puppy learned a new trick. Took all of 20 minutes while playing with him. He is still a puppy since he will only be 2 this month. But he learned to lay down, took me laying down on the floor, and him pouncing a few times on me, and trying to get me up by lifting my arm, but he has learned down! He's known sit for awhile, but never lay down. Can't say its a trick, but a command that he didn't really 'learn'. Some puppy treats and a few minutes is all it takes.

And those big brown eyes! So sweet, so gentle. We've had two beagles since the kids were born. Our first, Lady Jane, was a real sweetheart, but got out one day and was hit by a car. I cried for a week.

Our Snoopy came from the rescue center. He was 7, and again a real sweetheart. He goes nuts with other dogs, if they're bigger. He took off after two large Labs one time, but is terrified of our old tomcat, and runs to us if the cat enters the room. Go figure!

He does the "howl" when he hears a train. There is one that goes by every night around 6 pm he howls at, we call it Snoopy's Train. Generally, the only time he does it.

Doesn't come when called unless he wants to, will eat anything and everything he can think of, slops water when he drinks, likes to sleep on the furniture and in our bed. The list could go on but really, he is the best, and even when he's not, all he has to do is look at us with those big brown eyes and all is forgiven. Love this breed and this dog to pieces. Wish he and Lady Jane could have spent time with each other, the fun we would have had!

OMG I love that! Toby cracks me up when his head is out the window and his ears are doing the "superdog" thing. I often find myself just stroking his ears -- very theraputic!

That's awesome! Does your dog do tricks whenever he sees a treat? Our old Scottie used to sit and give us her paw whenever we took out a treat before asking her.

Yep, mine does that to, then when she runs through the house, one always gets stuck back, so I'm always telling her to fix her ears. She just got a bath so she's flipping out right now, she hates baths, but she had to get clean cause she's going to grandma's cause were going to Disneyland for a few days,

I went and looked at Petfinders, I fell in love with so many animials, I couldn't do that job, I would want to keep them all. My beagle needs a buddy to play with and get some exercise. I play with her and walk her every night when I get home from work, but I know it's not enough, so I thought another dog might help.

Mine is the same way, any kind of food and she is right there with me, just once I'd like to eat a meal without those big brown eyes staring at me. Another thing she does is the second I get home from work and open the door, I'm attacked, most times I have my arms full and can't bend down to pet her right away, and I'm saying move, move, move, you'd think she would learn to wait till I'm in the door and have my hands free!!
