I'm interested in creating a backyard theater.

So, does anyone have one? What sort of screen do you use? What kind of projector do you have, and do you know where I can find one that would be easy-ish on my pocketbook?

I found a 14' blow-up screen at walmart.com that I'm thinking about, and I just LOVE the idea of sitting outside watching movies on a big screen under the stars, hanging out with family and friends, popcorn:: eating popcorn!

Now I just have to convince DH that it's worth the start-up cost... Maybe if I let him watch :darth: :yoda: :chewy: :ewok: on it? :thumbsup2

We do!

We are currently using a white sheet for our screen (it works great!) - and I got the projector on overstock for pretty decent $$ (~$350)

We have an ongoing movie night for our friends/neighbors the last friday of the month (starting again in April).

It's so much fun!! Do it!

Ooh! Yea! :cheer2:

So, the white sheet works? I might try that first, rather than buying the screen right away. Now I have to do a search for a cheapish projector.

I'm still working on my DH- I'm just obsessed with this idea.

I want to do it soooo bad. We could use the back of our house, its a nice big space except we'd have to put the projecter in the middle of our pool. :sad2:

I love the back yard. And if we could have a campfire in a fire pit while we are watching a movie!!!!! That would be cool! (obviously we do not have a fireplace inside)

But you get all the benefits of camping with a nearby (clean) washroom, and fridge and electricity and....

Does the projector have the audio as well? Or do you need a sound system?

Imagine watching scary movies in the dark..... With all the noises around...

I found this website - www.backyardtheater.com. It seems to have a ton of info on how to get started cheaply.

This is something DH and I would LOVE to do. The idea of monthly movie nights is great. I was shocked at how reasonable the prices are for the inflatable screens (the Mickey one is sooooo cool). The cost we're concerned about is the projector/sound system.

For those that do this, what kind of projector and sound system do you use?

Wow, what a wonderful site! Thanks for posting it.

I'm also thinking about the Mickey screen- LOVE it! And I found that site yesterday too! Isn't it amazing what people have done? They had a thread about how to do a backyard theater on the cheap, but I haven't had a chance to really explore/read about it yet.

I did do a yahoo shopping search for projectors and did find some reasonably priced- in the $350-$600 ranges. But I'm wondering about the sound system too.

I have a feeling this is going to turn into a huge investment over time.

Growing up we went to outdoor movies put on by my parents summer home place.

It was fun. Lots of bugs though.

They still have them. I might go back and do it again when I move.:thumbsup2

We have a local drive-in theater that still runs in the summer on weekends, but I thought- How cool would it be if I could pull it off in my own back yard? Fire up the grill, have food and popcorn and friends and drinks!

And I love a theme, so I'm already thinking of themed food to be paired with certain movies.

I just think it would be such a fun way to get together!

I was just going to post this link.

Although I'd LOVE to have a really cool backyard setup, we do something fairly simple.

It stared because I needed a projector for work (laptop presentations, etc.) I then realized with a pretty small investment, I could use it for other things, as well.

We got a Gemmy Blow-up Screen (I think at Walmart.com). That was about $200. It's super easy to set up - only takes about 10-15 minutes and an electrical outlet for the power.

We also have an inexpensive (relatively) projector. Worry more about lumens more than anything else for an outdoor theater - you'll need it. 2000 lumens works pretty well after dusk. When it's DARK, it's perfect. If you've got a couple extra bucks, try and find a 2500 or 3000 lumens. But remember, it's going to be outside (moisture, bugs, people tripping over the cord in the dark, etc) and mobile, too - so it might get a little more "action" than a traditional fixed in-home projector. So, don't go overboard just in case. You can pick up a decent NEW projector for $500-600 or so. Remember, the bulbs are expensive. Sometimes if you buy an extended warrantee through the store (like Best Buy), they'll cover the cost of 1 bulb replacement. Sometimes the warrantee is less than the cost of the bulb, so it's a good deal.

Now, while the projector is important, the sound will really blow them away. You don't even have to go nuts with it either. A couple years back at our grocery store - you know that section where they sell small TV's or DVD players and junk? They had a cheap 5.1 DVD with surround sound speakers. It's probably only a total of 250-300 watts (for the 4 speakers + subwoofer), but you don't want to tick off the neighbors, either (since the movies will probably run until 11PM, figuring starting at 8-8:30PM due to light). We position the small speakers surrounding where everyone will sit, and cranked to maybe half-way - REALLY blows people away!!! I think we paid $99 for it.

The best part is that it's all pretty portable. The screen comes with it's own carrying bag, as does the projector. And we bought a plastic Rubbermaid container for the DVD, speakers, projector, wires, and (this is very important) - you're going to need a surge protector multi-outlet thing. There are NEVER enough outlets! Oh - and Off. Lots of Off and Citronella Candles. If we're invited over friends for a pool party, or a picnic, or whatever, we bring along our container and in 30-45 minutes, we can set the whole thing up wherever we go! We get a lot of invites because of it! :thumbsup2

As I mentioned, I use the projector, DVD player (and sometimes the screen) a lot for work, too. 90% of the time it's used for work for presentations, seminars, education, etc. So, it's multi-use for not much more cost.

You can have a very nice set up for about $1,000 that'll really work nicely. You can even go cheaper, if you're creative!

Good luck! You'll LOVE backyard theater!

I've done it with just the white sheet, but built a cheap frame with some light sticks of 1X. Staple the sheet to the frame, and then hang it in the garage when it's not in use. Perfect.

That is all really great information. Thanks! We don't have a massive, elaborate backyard, but it's big enough to entertain a lot of people comfortably (we have an awesome Oktoberfest each year). My only concern is that we live in a development, though we do have a corner lot and have people only on one side of us.

Seriously, this can be so much fun.

rayelias-That is good info! I'm glad someone knows about lumens, because I really don't know much about projectors.

We don't have (close) neighbors, so the sound carrying isn't really an issue. So, I think I'll hunt around for some sort of sound system.

And has anyone else seen the ad for - I think it's an Epson- projector in magazines, where the kids are on sleeping bags in the back yard and watching a movie on the side of the garage? Know which one I'm talking about? (or do I have to go through all my magazines again?) :rotfl:

We use the white sheet, too! Works wonderfully! We hang it off the garage and then hook up the projector and whammo -- instant open air theatre! The neighborhood loves when we have a screening!

I am so glad to hear all the positive responses!!

I can't wait to get started.

We're having a yard sale in May, so maybe I'll use the proceeds towards my new hobby...

I have one as well. I use my DJ set up for audio, so the sound ROCKS! But you don't get surround sound. I started out using a sheet like many of you, but eventually bought a nice screen. 7' x 10' screen. So now I use this setup at some of the weddings I do.

BTW, a recommendation or tip: Many of the really inexpensive projectors have a big negative... a replacement bulb costs nearly as much as the actual projector unless you are lucky enough to find a generic replacement.

Ya know what else is cool? Hooking up a playstation or XBox to the projector.... nothing like blowing up 5 foot tall bad guys!

This is an important factor. My friends have a war going on across the street from them between several neighbors. I've been there when movies were being shown and we could hear it from quite a distance away. I know it would drive me nuts if I lived next to it. Music I can handle, sound effects and dialog......ehhhhh.

I quite agree- I would think it was totally obnoxious if I could hear it and didn't want to.

I loooooovve not having close neighbors. :cloud9: DH and I lived in a townhouse for about 3 1/2 years before we moved here, and we always had really craptastic neighbors who would blare music at 2am, or play their electric guitars at 3 am (with the amp!!). They hated me because I would periodically call the police and report them- but have some courtesy! Good grief. :headache:

That said, I don't need my entire village to hear the movie- just my entire yard!! :rotfl:

Just bought this:

Piper665.jpg

from a fellow DJ who no longer needs it... used 2x. $135 including shipping.

It's the equivalent of a 66.5" HD screen.

BTW, he has another one for sale... slightly smaller....
