Anyone had their trip cancelled?

DH and I are looking into several ABD trips over the next few years...using our DVC points. I was looking over their website and just wondered if anyone has had their trip cancelled...I am not worried about the refunds, etc because they seem to have that covered...I am more concerned about the time I will have reserved to take off from work (we own our own business!) and then be stuck with no vacation...will they offer you a different ABD or just switch your itinerary to a different date?

In 2009, when the economy tanked, ABD had just expanded, and so there were several cancellations that year. But that really seems to have been the exception and not the rule. I think only a few trips have been canceled since then, I remember one was because of some sort of natural disaster, I think there might have been one other. But it hasn't happened much. Their policy this year is that they will not cancel a trip less than 70 days before it's scheduled start date.

It *is* a risk, but at this point, it's a pretty small risk. We've seen a few trips go with 15 people or less. I really think they'd rather not cancel a trip...

Oh, and to answer your question, my Canadian Rockies trip was canceled in 2009 as a part of that whole cancellation/consolidation effort. But ABD was FABULOUS, and really worked with me, and got me moved to another trip (Alaska) that left 2 days earlier (and work was fine with that). It turned out to be an awesome trip, so I don't harbor any hard feelings. (Not to say that I'm not paranoid myself until that "70 days" is past!) So they will switch you to a different itinerary if that's what works best. Only thing I saw was someone who went from, I think it was Costa Rica to Italy, and they didn't pay the full difference in the airfare, since the price difference was SO MUCH. But they paid to switch my Montana/Calgary airfare to Alaska.

Our Australia trip was cancelled in 2009 and we switched to Alaska instead. I totally agree with Sayhello that ABD did a great job rescheduling. I didn't have a problem changing dates, so it was an easy process for us. I'm sure we don't hear about everything, but the only trips I recall being cancelled in the last couple of years were Peru because of the mudslides at Machu Picchu, the Galapagos trip that was cancelled due to the police strike, and the Egypt trips this year, of course. Our upcoming SWS trip is a go with 15.
