Anyone had surgery for ingrown toenail?

That's probably why the shot hurt so much. You should have had it done a lot sooner!:confused3

They sprayed my toe with the cold stuff and the needle still hurt like h*ll! They put up a screen so I couldn't see anything, but it felt like the nurse was sticking a HUGE needle straight through my toe, in several places. I have nasty red marks, which I assume are the injection sights. I think it took longer to numb it then it did to do the actual surgery. It was awful. I'm starting to wonder if someone else could have done a better job. Some nurses are better at giving shots than others.

I'm on oral antibiotics and I have to clean, medicate and re-bandage it twice a day so I'm hoping it won't get infected.

I also had to have x-rays after the surgery. Did anyone else have that done? I should have asked why they do that because I've been wondering.
my doctor actually did the needle
I had bruises all over my toe from where it went and because they have to put it in so deep. I didnt have xrays. Both of my feet are ok now. But the first time I had the surgury I was so scared to go to the doctor my foot was ah I cant even describe it. I would agree with the poster that said the needle is as bad or worse than an epidural.

Oh, believe me I know I should have gone a loooong time ago, but like I said, I'm scared to death of doctors and couldn't get up the courage to do it. I was watching either ER or Grey's Anatomy a few weeks ago and a guy had to have his foot amputated because he didn't go to a doctor to have it taken care of. That was kind of the straw that broke the camel's back. My mom (nurse) had been telling me forever to go get it taken care of, but it finally sunk in when I saw that show.

I remember the anesthesiologist trying to give me an epidural when I was in labor and after four pokes and still no success he had to give up because the baby was coming. The pain of that needle was absolutely nothing compared to this toenail thing. My toe is actually still kind of numb after two days. Maybe that's why I'm feeling no pain.

Before the surgery, my toe looked awful too, very red and swollen and gross.

I had this done about 10 years ago, both big toes. Only I still get ingrown nails, even though they killed part of the nail. It's like the skin on the end of the toes overlaps the corner of the nail. Guess I'm just weird. Anyway, I have one now and I think I may have to go to my new foot Dr.

I suffered from the time I was a little girl until I was 40 with horrible ingrown toe nails. And they always seem to flare up when I was heading on vacation or something important was happening and just did not have the time to devote to soaking it...ahhhh...

Finally, I went to a podiatrist. He told me that my toenails were "deformed" that the way they grew caused the continued # of ingrown nails.

Now this was in 1990 or so and at that time, the suggestion was to remove both nails. I had each one done separately because the aftercare was so important that it was best to do one foot and then wait 6 months and do the other.

I have never ever had another ingrown toenail!!

My DS' as they grew up started down the same path as me with the ingrown toenails and both DS' went to the podiatrist (2000) and TODAY they just STRIP the sides of the nail, leaving the nail in place. My DS' have never had an ingrown since having the minor surgery done (in the office). And very little aftercare and BOTH feet can be done at the same time. :goodvibes

I have had it done twice. The first time was back in the 80's and was performed by a general surgeon. All parts of the procedure were painful. The shot, the surgery, and the recovery. A real bad experience.

Two years ago I had it done by a podiatrist. It was a piece of cake. While he injects the toe, he sprays a numbing solution at the same time. I couldn't even feel it. The surgery was painless and there was very little pain afterward.

My suggestion - find a good podiatrist.

I have had 3 sides done now. And I have to say that the Needle hurt the worst for me also. It honestly felt like the biggest needle around.

Ingrown toenail tendencies is why I happily pay the money for a spa pedicure. It's really is proactive & medicinal.

agnes!

I've never had a pedicure. What do they do that would prevent ingrown toenails?

I had a pedicure in NOv at the GF spa and it was fab! I would agree that it really helped my feet, and made them feel better.
