Not long home from the Orthodontist & guess what??

DS needs braces & some other work done & the total bill is $4,100!!! YIKES!!!

I knew it wasn't cheap, but I didn't expect that much:(

There goes next years holiday:(

Yikes, sorry to hear that, Auriel. Can your dentist do a payment plan? I know when I had my braces years and years ago they had a payment booklet, like a car payment and you could pay it over time.

:bounce::wave::bounce:

Yes Debbi he is doing it that way. He is quite good when it comes to payments.

I don't have to pay anything until the day the braces are fitted, which will prob be around March/April or maybe even later. Just depends on when his 4 teeth that have still to come through do just that, then they have to be removed to allow room for the rest of his teeth. His mouth is very overcrowded & at this moment in time his wisdom teeth are impacted, but the Ortho is hoping to correct that.

Yikes, Nutsy!! That is expensive, but just think how wonderful your DS's smile will be after he is done wearing them! :teeth:

:):)

Yes Beanie, his smile will be so much nicer at the end of all this.......no more ugly overhang or crowding:D

I must say, $4100 is CHEAP!!!!!!! I looked into braces as an adult, and the total would have been more than $10,000!!! That would be for: pulling 4-6 teeth, palate realigning appliances/ palate expander for at least a year, head gear, and over three years of braces, and retainers. Wonder why I haven't done it yet??? Of course, my area (New Jersey) is very expensive area to live.

But, good for you for getting him the braces! Straight teeth and a beautiful smile are a necessity nowadays! :)

Wow & I thought $4,000 was bad.

He has to have the braces for 14 -16 months & then retainers for a further 12 months (?) after that. 4 teeth need to be pulled but that will be done through the school dentist as it's free.

WOW! Free teeth pulling at school!

That does it - I want to move to Australia! I can save $6,000 and have straight teeth, too! :teeth:

Yeah we have a free school dentist scheme over here......it's run by the government, but whilever the kids are still in school they are entitled to free dental.:)

Wow Auriel, that's great! The most our kids get here are 'visits' at school from a dentist or an assistant (usually) who pass out toothpaste & toothbrushes and, give instructions on proper brushing, that's it!

DS's pedodontist referred DS to an orthodontist his last 2 check-ups but, it's sooo not gonna happen. He'd have to wear full-mouth braces for about 18mos-2 years for 1 tooth in the back of his mouth. He has a beautiful smile otherwise. He also does NOT want braces.

I wanted them, my parents couldn't afford them.

We know already that DD will need something done since she's missing an adult front tooth (via xrays). I feel bad already for her and, I don't even care how much it'll cost right now.

Payment plans are the way to go though! My best friend has worked for orthodontists for years and, they've always done that. Quite nice, imo.

Best wishes for your DS!

Which ds, Nutsy? My dd will probably need braces in 2-3 years. She does NOT like to be reminded of that.

Wow...14 to 16 months!...My Ds is just got his on and the ortho told us 3 1/2 years! Ugh!...the total is about 4500!...I just about fell on the floor...he has the over crowding too so he has to have 4 teeth removed and the wisdom teeth too...Poor kid....
Good luck!...I'm hoping I'll win the lotto! LOL

My three kids all needed braces, which will begin soon. I shopped around. There are wide differences in cost here. Also, dental schools offer discounts on treatment. I had my braces done by Thomas Jefferson University. And the advantage to a teaching hospital is that they have all of the latest stuff. The work is always supervised by instructors and only students ready to go out on their own do the work.
