We camped at FW back in the early 80's and I got very ill from the lake water. (Had to go on antibiotics) My mom says I was slurping the water and spitting it out (yuck!).
At FW on our last trip, they said wading was acceptable. I think also water skiing, triathalons have adult participants and perhaps they are more concerned with small children in the water.
