Anyone going Geocaching this weekend? **NEW CACHERS...POP IN!**

Ya winter caching around here usually includes trekking poles & yak-trax (sp?). They are like snow chains for your shoes. lol

Thanks, Splsh! Winter caching has to be tough up where you are. I would have the fight going on inside me...go, it's too cold, go, it's too cold. LOL!

Yak-trax? LOL! I'll have to look those up. There was a guy posting at some caches we were at this weekend. He had something on his boots that grabbed onto the ice. Why don't I know about these things? LOL!

yup, that's what they are. http://yaktrax.com/ I got mine at EMS. There are similar products on the market that do the same type of thing. I know QVC carries stuff like this too.
I only use them when its really slippery. I can't afford to fall since I have an 11" steel rod in my back. But I take my trekking poles all the time in the winter to help.

So, have you guys ventured over to the geocaching.com forums yet....or are you all still just posting here about it? Do your states or area have their own geocaching clubs...some have websites for discussion too. Do you go to events? We do -- or should I say, I do.....ALL the time. They are great! I've made some great friends.

Congrats on getting to 1,000!!!:cheer2: WTG! I am very impressed!
I supervised at work this past weekend and while on one of the wards I mentioned something about going geocaching. One of the girls asked what in the world I was talking about. I gave her a condensed explination of it and she was so excited about it. She started begging...yes BEGGING me to show her how to geocache! I printed off some news paper articles about it and gave them to her to read. By the end of the day she was hooked and had not even been out yet! I met her at Wal-Mart after I got off work (a full 2 hours after her, she waited there for me!). She bought her own GPS and we are heading out this morning! She cracked me up! She bought some shoes just for GC, and already wants a TB!
I love it! I may have a new caching pal!
My other big news is that I will be starting a new job in the next couple weeks! This has been in the owrks for a while and things are set now. I will be off every Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday! My new caching pal is off every Wednesday so that means we have a set caching day!!!:yay:  :cool1:
Well, time to take the kids to school, and start my friend off on her first hunts!pirate:
OHHHH....how could I forget?!?!?! We also just decided that we will be heading to THE world this summer! My sister (not the one with the triplets) has a co-worker who had a condo up for use in early June! Couldn't pass that up!!! WOHOOOO!

I had never even heard of this until coming across this thread earlier this morning. It dawned on me that perhaps the crazy man I saw across the street from my house (on a bike path) may not have been crazy after all. He was down on his hands and knees looking under a bench along the bike path, lifted the trash can to look underneath. Then he was crawling around the base of a tree. He spent a good 20 minutes looking all around. Here I thought he was some weird lunatic when this is probably what he was doing!:lmao: At least I finally have an explanation for that guy's behavior! Still don't really get what this is all about but that at least it explains that little bizarre mystery!

LOLOLOL!!! :lmao: :lmao: :lmao: :lmao: :lmao:
You should try it! :) Try this...

www.geocaching.com

In the box on the upper right corner of their page, enter your zip code. It will bring up the caches closest to you. You'll need to register as a member (FREE!) in order to see the coordinates and maps of caches, but it's a place to start.

It sure sound like that guy was probably caching! :teeth:  :lmao:

For everyone's FYI...I don't know if you might have a Bass Pro Shops near you, but in a local paper here they had an advertisement that on March 4, they will be selling the little yellow e-trex for something like $49. I paid $99 for mine back there!! It's just while supplies last, no rainchecks.

Maybe you'll be a new recruit, N&B's Mom! :teeth: It's a bunch of fun!!

Splsh...Yaktrax look neat! I don't think I'd be heading down a good sized hill with them, but I can think of a couple caches I would have gotten. :teeth: And you have a steel rod in your back? :earseek: Bless your heart! I don't think I'd be out on snow and ice if I had that.

I've been to the forums on GC.com a few times. They're okay when I'm looking for something in particular. I do like the folks here though. :teeth: Must be that geocaching/Disney combination!! :teeth: :thumbsup2

lilallybean...Congratulations on the new recruit! A new caching buddy! Woooo hooooo!! What fun! :teeth: And congrats on the new job! Good luck with it. It sounds like a fantastic schedule!  And GREAT NEWS on the summer plans!!!

Oh my! That is just too funny! It really does sound like he was geocaching. If he was you should see others doing the same thing. It would be interesting to see if there really is a cache there.

It has really been a VERY fun hobby for me, and it is one exercise program that I enjoy! Today was the first warm day that we have had in a long time. The kids were at school, my hubby at work....and me....well I was wandering around in the woods looking for little tupperware containers filled with toys! I had a blast. :woohoo:
My friend called early this AM and couldn't go. She has the flu bug that has been going around here. She was so upset, I think she just might have been crying! Oh well, there is always next time!

Woooooooooooooooo hooooooooooooooooooo!!! More daylight hours for caching! Just got this from a friend whose husband is military and just got this at his job...

Due to changes authorized by Congress, the beginning and ending dates of
daylight saving time (DST) have been changed to the 2nd Sunday in March
and the first Sunday in November beginning with this year. As a result,
DST will begin on 11 March this year instead of the previous timeframe
in April.

lilallybean...I hope your friend is feeling better soon and out after her first cache!

Happy caching! :magnify:

Sandy: CONGRATULATIONS on #1000! :cool1: :thumbsup2
We haven't even hit 300 yet and we're going on 4 years!
Our son came home Friday night! We drove down to D.C. to get him, as the Navy would only pay for him to fly that far. He is home until Saturday, at which time he will be reporting to Andrews Air Force Base (MD) for an extended tour of duty (3 years). After getting to Andrews, he will spend a few weeks before going down to Norfolk for a 6 week "C" School. Once he completes that phase of training, he heads back to Andrews. We may take him down on Saturday. If so, we might try to do some caching on the way home.

SplshMtn99: You will enjoy paperless caching. It makes a world of difference and makes life a whole lot easier.

N&B'smom: Yup. Sounds like you muggled a geocacher, alright! Did it look like he ever found anything of significance?

Good caching, everyone!

Thanks very much, Mike!

That is FANTASTIC news about your son! Woooo hoooooo!!! And how nice for you to be able to have him home a week before he starts getting settled in and back to work. Enjoy your time together! C School in Norfolk? :teeth: He'll be in my territory at that point. I'm sure his time here will fly. Good luck to him! I'm sure he'll be spectacular just like he was in his last training! :thumbsup2

Happy caching! :magnify:

Hi Sandy,
Well, David came home for a week and we took him down to Andrews Air Force Base on Saturday. It's quite a place! We even got to see Air Force 1 while we were there! Anyway, he has gone through orientation and is ready to start fulfilling his duty in Aviation Ordnance. He will be there a month or so before leaving for his "C" School in Norfolk. He should be there around 6 weeks before coming back to Andrews.
The weather here hasn't been very good for caching lately: bitterly cold and windy with snow off and on. Fortunately, it was nice when we were down at Andrews. It looks like it might get a little nicer beginning Saturday so maybe we'll be able to get out for a little caching. I hope so!
I guess that's it. When do you think you'll hit 2000? :)
Good caching!

LOLOL!!! You are sooooooooooooooooooooo funny! 2,000! LOLOL! Not even remotely thinking about that one. :teeth:

I'm sure Andrews AFB and seeing Air Force 1 must have been something! I wouldn't think that too many people get too close to it unless they're military. It sure sounds like David is on an exciting path! :teeth: :thumbsup2

I hope everyone's weather has improved. It was GORGEOUS here this weekend. Actually met up with another cacher and headed out to a state park. Beautiful day for it on Saturday!! Problem was hiking TEN (10) miles!!!!! :earseek: :earseek: :earseek: My feet STILL hurt. Four dollars to park, hike 10 miles and get aching feet, found three caches. LOL! Something just seems wrong about that. ;) Thank goodness we at least found an evil micro! Would have been upset if we missed that. :) It was in an area with Spanish Moss hanging from the trees. A micro in the moss! Holy cow! I lucked out spotting the top of the container. The rest of it had moss glued to it to camo it. Ugh. LOL! Someone was out there today and called me for help, but he didn't find it apparently. :( It's definitely a tough one. And, of course, the container is the same moss green color. :scared1:

Hope everyone in the colder states can get out there soon!

Happy caching! :magnify:

Hi, everyone! :wave2:

Has anyone gotten out caching yet? Between babies, kids, and cold weather, it seems like you haven't been out in ages! ;)

We headed over to Gloucester county a week or so ago. Caches are too spread out over there. They need more caches! Hoping to get to Fredericksburg on Saturday. Lots of caches there including a brand new Earth cache! :Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc Somewhat debating that having paid $2.55 a gallon for regular unleaded this morning. :faint: Someone remind me...why is it we pay higher prices in the warmer weather???

Hope everyone is doing great and getting out soon if you haven't been already!

Happy caching! :magnify:

I have been out a few times recently. We went to an event cache about a week ago. I had so much fun!!! There was a poker run...go to 5 different caches, pick up 5 different poker chips, get all 5 and come back reach into a bag full of cards and draw out 1 card for each chip...highest hand wins. All we got was a pair of 3s!!!:rotfl: The winner got a NEW Magellan GPS that had been donated by Magellan! Nice prize huh! The winner just had a pair of 9s ace high! There was a class on paperless caching...not sure that I got it all but it was a nice start. LOTS of door prizes and i AM thrilled with what I came home with! I got a signed copy of The Idiot's Guide to Geocaching!!! It is signed by: Elias, and two others...please help me with the names if you can....looks like-Rothskferi??? and Dentler??? There is a drawing of signal with his name. As numbers were called out we were able to pick whatever we wanted (one item) from the table of goodies. There were lots of geocoins, but I figured this was a really special prize so I picked it.
After the event one of the guys running it too my daughter, niece and I out for a personal tour of some caches in the area! We had such a great time.

I did a race that my brother had set up and that turned out very well. He had 1 team at a time do the course. I was the only person who did it alone. :confused3 He sure didn't offer me any help...I just sat and laughed at me while I ran around. Well, in the end I finished 2nd!!! I am very pleased with my time. I completed the course alone in 1 hour and 10 mins!!! The first place TEAM of two legend hunters...both with over 1500 finds...finished in 1 hour and 1 min!!!

Last sunday my daughter and I went out and grabbed three caches on our way home from visiting the triplets. We were going after #4 and 5 when our adventure was cut short.:sad2: We were too freaked out to continue after we ran across two snakes!!!:scared1: I hope to go out this Sunday for a while with my hubby and kids.

Hope to hear more from all of you. I have been wondering about you all. Waiting to hear of your adventures....:rolleyes1

Hi Everyone,
We haven't been out for a few weeks, mostly due to a snow/sleet storm we had and some other lousy weather. We have had quite a few new cachers finding our caches the past few days so people are getting more active. Now, we've started our annual indoor/outdoor home projects, so caching may be limited to Sunday afternoons for a while. This afternoon, we will be taking our Navy son down to Philly so he can catch a train back to Andrews AFB. He came home for the weekend for an Easter visit since he will be temporarily assigned to Norfolk beginning Friday. We may try to grab a cache or two on the way home, if it stops raining.
Sandy: The money hungry oil tycoons claim the increase is due to them switching from winter to summer gas! Unbelievable! :sad2: Caching in Fredericksburg sounds interesting. We had a great time caching near Gettysburg once. I hope you had fun!
lilallybean: It sounds like you really had a nice event! WOW! A free Magellan GPSr! How many cachers were there? We usually get well over 100 at our event caches and it keeps right on growing. Our spring picnic should be coming up fairly soon. Paperless caching is really pretty simple: you buy a PDA/base (we got ours on Ebay for less than $20); add some software to it (it costs about $8); and then download the files from geocaching.com, just like you would download cache files for your GPSr. It sure saves a lot of time and effort. We currently have hundreds of caches stored in our PDA with each one consisting of 5 or 6 pages of info. We don't carry any paper around anymore (thus, paperless caching) and everything about each cache is right at our fingertips. I hope this helps.
I guess that's it. Good caching!

There were about 30-35 cachers plus their kids at the event. Almost everybody left with something. My niece got a cool backpack with the geocaching logo. Our events here are not nearly as big as the ones you have from the sounds of it, maybe it will keep growing:confused3 .We FINALLY set up our pineapple cache, and it has been found once already! I can't wait to get out and get some more finds under our belts. I just found out about a bike trail that is about 8 miles long and has about 40 caches along it!!! I think I may try to hit it before too long!

lilallybean: Your event caches probably will grow. We normally have at least 4/year here in the Lehigh Valley of PA: 2 breakfasts and 2 picnics. Then, there are usually a few others for such things as birthdays, etc. We usually make the picnics, which are really well attended. We also have quite a few new cachers in the area, judging by the the names of those finding our caches lately, so ours should still be growing. Is your pineapple cache like ours: a fake apple in a pine tree? If so, you'll probably get some nice comments about it when your cachers log in. Our latest version is a green apple, which is tough to spot sometimes. We got it at a Michael's Crafts store.
Well, we didn't do any Philly area caches yesterday due to inclimate weather. Our son did get back to Andrews safely, though, and he heads to Norfolk on Friday for a 6-week school.
I guess that's it for now.
Good caching!

Our pineapple cache is like yours. I stole your idea and ran with it. We did use a green apple and have already gotten some good feedback. We placed it at our local firestation so the firemen are enjoying the insanity of folks running around this big tree looking for it. I start my new job today. I am nervous and excited. It should be interesting. I have worked in the mental hospital for just over 15 years, this will be my first time in the prison system. :scared: I just hope Ican adjust to the change quickly and comfortably. My friends that went down there already assure me that I will really like it. Hope they are right!
