I just went to check in my family just now for our flight tomorrow and we got boarding group B. I want A b/c we have young kids and I want us to be able to sit fairly close together if possible. If I re-did the checkin-in could I possibly be changed to boarding group A? (I see there is a place to change the fact that I have checked in.)

We've had B several times and still were able to sit together. You will probably need to go further back in the aircraft which is really no big deal. SW seating is three and three across, so you may not get all three across, but, rather two and two across, or two and two behind. I wouldn't attempt to go back and change it because if anything you would be changed to a C not an A. Once the A's are gone they're gone. How old are your kids anyway? If you have any under 4 you should be preboarded anyway so the boarding pass becomes a moot point. Once in awhile if the flight is booked solid, or even overbooked they'll suspend preboarding, especially if it appears the preboard group is the majority of flight, but, I've only seen that happen once. Don't worry about it......SW flight attendants are very good at making sure you'll be able to sit with your kids. Enjoy your flight!! I just saw your daughter is only 3......you should be preboarded no problem!!

NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Boarding letters are assigned in order of checkin. If you got B, and cancel your checkin and redo it, you could get B or you could get C. All the A passes were assigned by the time you checked in.

Just head for the back of the plane. There'll still be PLENTY of seats.

1) You have a 3 and a 5 year old. You'll probably be allowed to pre-board.
2) For others reading this thread. As long as there aren't a lot of passengers already on the plane (continuing flight) most of the Bs will get seats together. Just go to the back of the plane.
3) SW assigns the As then the Bs and finally the Cs. The only way a passenger will get an A, after the As were assigned is if a passenger with an "A" BP cancels his reservation. I'm not even sure you can get a new seat assignment. I thought the only way to cancel your seat assignment is to cancel your reservation.

Thanks! I checked-in only 45min after the 24hr "mark". I realized that I may get a C so I'll just keep it! Thanks!!

The only time we had to split up (family of 4) was once when we got "C's" and were near the end of the C line.

I checked in about 20-30 minutes after the 24hr mark and got one 'A' and one 'B' for a flight out of Chicago tomorrow. I was surprised but as long as get to leave the snow and the cold I'll be fine.

I'll be headed into Chicago tomorrow morning for a very short 8 hour stay. Then it's back to sunny (albeit slightly brisk) southern California!

Bottom line is people would rather you sit with your kids. Someone would be willing to adjust their seat to accommodate you. However with B seating, you should be plenty good on sitting together.

As others have said, you shouldn't have a problem getting preboard status. But just in case, B's aren't so bad. To me, the ideal is getting on at the back of the A line. Plenty of choices, no problem getting seats together, but control over who we sit near and by. The front of the B line is essentially the same.

We got C's last February. The 3 of us were still together - we were just in the very back of the plane.
If you do not pre-board you should still be OK with the B's as long as you make it to the airport relatively early.
