DH has a job interview in Louisville and I was wondering if anyone could tell me about the area: schools, housing, kids activities, etc.?

We have 2 kids a second grade DD and DS who will start kindergarten next year.

Hi there! I've lurked for a long time, but this question prompted me to register! I am a Louisville resident and can tell you that we are a great city for kids as far as activities go; however, I have to warn you about the public school system here. JCPS has a cluster program (schools with different focus in various parts of town) that has caused A LOT of drama lately. Some of the programs are not in the best part of town and we have had many parents pick a neighborhood specifically for the school and end up getting bused to another part of town for elem. school. If you can live in Oldham Co. or even S. Indiana, I would say do it for the schools; another option that's big here is private (Catholic) schools. Housing is pretty reasonable- the better neighborhoods are in the eastern part of the county (east of I-65). You definitely pay more the further east you go in the county. As for activities, there are museums, science center, the Louisville Slugger museum and a great waterfront park. Univ. of Louisville sports and horses are obviously pretty big here as well. I never thought I would say I enjoy living here, as I am from a different part of the state, but there is certainly something for everyone!

Good luck to your DH on his interview!

I had been warned about the schools. It sounds like a pretty complicated system. We prefer public schools, so we if we move we'll probably concentrate our househunting on areas outside of JCPS. How is the traffic if you live further out? We've lived in Atlanta, so I don't think anywhere could possibly be worse than that, but it's still something to consider! LOL
