We may have to relocate from Massachusetts to Texas!!! This is going to be a huge change both climate and culturally! Neither of us have ever been to Texas, and we do not have any children, so for those of you that live there:

Any places to avoid?
Any places you love?
Any nurses?
Any hosptials you recommend working for or avoiding?

Tell me all about Texas living :) I am trying to get excited instead of terrified!

I'm not from Texas, but I think I'm gonna tag along on this thread. :) DFi and I have considered relocating to Texas, too, once I'm out of nursing school - hopefully either the Dallas/Ft. Worth area, or the Austin area. We don't have any kids either, so sounds like we're just about in the same situation. :thumbsup2

You may want to narrow your request to a specific area. Texas is a huge state!;)

Texas is a huge state. Very diverse. Yes, I would avoid the places in East Texas where crazy people drag African Americans behind their cars for sport. I would avoid the border towns where crime on the other side is rampant. Other than those huge generalizations, there are good neighborhoods and bad ones like everywhere else. Give us a hint as to the part of the state you're considering and we'll be able to help you more.

Also, are you looking for an urban, suburban or rural lifestyle?

Ashley, that is exactly why we are thinking of moving there, it seems the only state that welcomes and trains new nurses! There seems to be a lot of opportunity there for new grads :)

Suburban! Near enough to hosptials but would like to live in an area with land and space for pets and relaxing. I love living on the coast now, but would love to be near a lake or body of water. We are not too picky actually. ANywhere but here (we dont like our current location much) we are really looking for a change.

Texas is way too large and diverse to tell you anything about TX living. We have it all here. You have to narrow down what kind of lifestyle you want, what kind of climate, cost of living, etc.

We live in Houston and love it - major medical center, lots of cultural things going on, great food - we live in the city, but the suburbs are great (if you like them - I don't.)

Things I love about Houston: the weather (7 months out of the year) the people - although coming from MA it might be a shock to have people smiling and waving at you when you walk by!

I'm not a fan of Dallas, but most Houstonians aren't...love Austin!

Hi,

I live in THE WOODLANDS, It is gorgeous and it has everything you would need. Check it out on the internet.

Also You might want to check out Sugarland which is the #1 community in the United States.

Houston and suburbs, people are very friendly but fast drivers if you are not used to that.

Not expensive to live here, housing, apartments and grocery is affordable here.

Get used to lots of driving though. We do have the best medical center in the world here in Houston and have friends who work for Methodist.

well. my daughter moved three years ago from North Shore of Mass to Austin Texas. The first year she loved it~partying etc..and now that she is married and has a baby, she is in the middle of no where and hates it. She wanted her family to move to NH, but he is from Oklahoma, and liked NH...but all HIS family is there! I have never been...plan on flying out sometime over the next few months thou.

Think about San Antonio. Near the Hill Country, the Valley and the Gulf Coast. We have a thriving medical community:

UT Health and Science Center:

Our latest new hospital - just opened in my community:

We have a city-wide celebration (among other year round events) that rivals Mardi Gras (but probably more family oriented):

The fabulous RiverWalk which is still growing and currently enjoying a facelift in some areas:

And one of the most affordable costs of living in Texas:

I you live in Houston, you hate Dallas. If you live in Dallas, you hate Houston. Everyone likes Austin and San Antonio.

I live in Katy. It is a suburb of Houston. They are building three hospitals within five miles of me. I love it here.

Very true!

If you are looking for a great city, close to the water, with a great medical center - look no further than Houston! Tons of culture, a short drive to Galveston Island and the best medical center in the US.

I am not too sure about people waving and smiling at you all the time like a PP said, but we are pretty friendly and we do drive fast. Nothing to be terrified of!

I have to put in a plug for my hometown, Paris. We are away from the big cities by about 1 to 2 hours but we have a lot to offer. There are 2 hospitals here plus several home health agencies. They are always looking for more nurses. We are 15 minutes from the Oklahoma border and maybe 2.5 or so from both Louisiana and Arkansas borders. Our weather is pretty diverse, except we don't see much snow.

My sister moved to Sugarland from PA last December. She loves living there!!! I can't wait to visit her:goodvibes.

I'm in a suburb of Ft Worth. Lots to offer here: several large good hospitals, major airport, good shopping and restaurants.

some things I don't like: the traffic is pretty awful (but not nearly as bad as Houston, Austin, or Dallas). Summer months. Very flat - not many hills.

I'm probably one of the few that love Dallas AND Houston. But I agree, Houston has the best medical center in the world. The main thing that I don't like about Houston is the humidity. OMG, that takes some getting used to, for sure. But the winter weather is wonderful. And Texas has HOT summers, regardless of where you live!

I'm a country girl, so I must live in the wide open spaces. I love visiting the cities, but would never want to live there. Texas has it all though. It's a "whole 'nother country". Decide exactly what you want, and you can find it in Texas. You will not regret a decision to move here. It's got the best, friendliest people in the world and is a great place to live.

We're in Central Texas about midway between Austin and Waco. As has been stated, the cuture is very diverse. I've lived in San Antonio, Big Spring (West Texas) and Beaumont (South East Texas). All were extremely different.

I work in Temple which is home to Scott and White hospital. It's a massive medical center with lots of sattelite clinics. There is also a hospital in Killleen, and of course several in Georgetown / Austin. Housing in this area is much lower than in the Austin metro area. (Right now a newer 4 bedroom home runs $100k-$125k.)

If I could pick a place to live in Texas, it would probably be San Antonio. We love it there. If my company had an office in SA, I'd love to relocate. I like Austin as well, but the layout is a bit more difficult to deal with traffic wise.

I've lived in TX all my life. Here are my opinions:

Corpus Christi - grew up here. Coastal city, not large, very nice, recommend.
Austin - went to school at UT. Loved it, never wanted to leave, would move back in a heartbeat. Beautiful hill country, lakes, rivers, etc. LOVE Austin.
San Antonio - lived here for several years. Excellent school districts, great hospitals, fantastic culture and lovely people. Recommend.
Dallas - lived here a few months. Ugh. Hate.
Houston - have lived here for over 10 years. Humid, heinous traffic, but nice people and lots to do culturally. World class Med Center - MD Anderson Cancer Center, Texas Childrens', etc.

Avoid like the plague - deep East or deep West TX.

Good luck!
