Anyone from Scarborough, Ontario area?

It seems that there are many of us here..I to grew up in Scarborough..Went to H.A. Halbert, Bliss Carmen, R.H. King and a semester at David and Mary Thompson when King went to Academy...I can't believe there is so many of us on here. I to am a huge Disney fan the Scarborough Store is my favorite of course :earsgirl:

I went to King as well - Sept 88 to June 1990 (grade 9,10, and 11) before I transfered downtown to an alternative school.

I knew your cousin Chris, not well but I recall his name and face. Small world is right!

I am currently at King . My cousin (Chris Hodgson) and sister (Becky Schofield) have already graduated- my cousin would have been a year younger then you, Becky graduated in 1994.

So we went to school at the same time! Doesn't it feel like ages ago? Married and 3 kids later for me! And in the suburbs - who would have thought? :)

Hey tig1! Glad to find someone else that went to Thomson! And I remember going to HA Halbert for home economics classes. I went to Hunter's Glen Public School and they didn't have the facilities to teach cooking, sewing, etc.

Yes, it is amazing how small a world it is! And all of us Disney fans too!

Thank you....no we made it. Had an amazing time...Can't wait to cruise again.

Sat night and into Sunday we hit the north front of Beta which made for alot of banging into walls in the halls but we survived....

Hello Fellow Canadians,

My wife and I and 2 year old son are in Oshawa. Moved from Toronto 1 year ago. We are heading to Disney on November 26th so began checking out forums.

Hey Robert,
Welcome to the DIS boards! You'll find all the information you'll ever need here with regards to questions about Disney (and lots of other things too!). And everyone is so nice and helpful, especially on the Canadian board!

Ha, this is so cool. I just joined the site today. It's nice to see so many fellow Scarberians. My husband and I were both born and raised in the Brimley & Ellesmere area. I went to David & Mary Thomson ! We moved north about 12 years ago ( ekk times goes fast ). I've recently became addicted to WDW due to our trip there in Oct. We plan to go back Jan 07. Great to see all this information here.

:earsboy: :) :earsgirl:

I graduated in 84 from David and Mary Thomson. I too moved about an hour north almost 13 years ago. Gezzz time does go fast !

Wow, it's good to see another Thomson-ite! I am much older than you (graduated in 1976) so time is going by much faster for me! It seems like just yesterday that I was there!

I'm
CABMOM's dh (took me forever to learn what these infernal shortforms stood for). Grew up in the heart of Scarb. (Agincourt). Went to Leacock as a kid, graduated in '90. Worked at Agincourt CI for couple years after. Lived Birch/Huntingwood, where my folks *STILL* live (unbelievably).

Cheers.

Huh - another Leacock grad here (class of '92, my sister Sherri graduated in '91). Wonder if we knew each other? Sherri and I hung out with people in band and theatre (the woefully underfunded and undersupported arts program at Leacock -- LCI was definitely a 'sports school'. We also went to music camp with the Barenaked Ladies...)
We grew up on Huntingwood near Kennedy, so might have even walked past your house to get to Leacock. :-) Our parents still live there;my sister visits frequently with her son, whereas we usually only go up for family events every few weeks (or less).
My dad was a Scarborough-area MPP (Member of Provincial Parliament) from '75-'95, so he knew the whole city quite well. He represented an area just south of us, though (south of 401).

I'm just west of the Scarborough/East York border now, but maintain my Scarborough connections through political work in Scarborough (ran for office in 2003, still on the riding exec there, etc).

Small world!

Know this is a long shot, but just wondering if any of my fellow Scarbough-ians knew Rick Schofield? He's the Scarborough Archivist and gets very involved with anything Scarborough. You might have seen him/his set up in the mall at the STC in February. Know it's a long shot, but everyone I've ever met seems to know him somehow, so I was just wondering. (He's family of mine)

Merfsko;
I am aware of your relative Rick Schofield. I used to work with the Toronto District School Board (formerly known as the Scarborough Board of Education-and just for the record, I had nothing to do with it being 'formerly'..ha!), and knew of Rick through the computer program we used called 'SCRIBE'.

Further, Rick went to school with my Dad and Uncle (brothers) at R.H. King (many, many moons before the Academy days).

As well, I belong to the Scarborough Historical Society, of which I believe Rick is a member.

WOW! This is like an answer to prayer...

I was searching all over the internet for a forum about Toronto and couldn't find one so I thought I'd mosey over to DISboards, 'cause you guys always help me out. I was specifically looking for Scarborough info!!!

My DF and I have found a condo (and he a job!) near Scarborough. I believe the condo we are looking at is a Tridel Condo at the corner of Ellesmere and Birchmount... Mondeo Springs. We are actually sending in our application today. The rent is reasonable. He is going to work in Markham. We like the looks of the Scarborough Shopping Center, but all of a sudden I am hearing all of these negative Scarborough comments.

Everyone I know is telling me that this is a dangerous place to live but we really think it seems to look ok. Can someone PLEASE fill me in on everything?

Once I move there, I'll also need a job, I'm a Hospitality/Travel Executive/Admin Assistant... any help would be appreciated. :flower:

OH! And, sorry to add this on to your Scarbs thread. I just thought at least you guys already are talking about it.

:teeth: Hi misslissa,

Congrats on your DHs job!

Scarborough is a very large borough (largest borough in Ontario I think) and like every other part of Toronto, there are better areas than others. Toronto, I think, is interesting in that you can have 'Cracktown' right across the street from 'Richville' - take Cabbagetown for example - right across the street is a very large Ontario Housing complex with not the best reputation, but go one block north and you can't get a showbox for under $500K. Where I live is another example - we are in Guildwood which is a great community of '50s 'suburbia' houses, but 5 mins in either direction are areas with a less than perfect reputation - Markham and Eglinton, Galloway etc. I have never felt 'scared' living where I do, and in general the people living in these areas are hard-working honest people. It is true that unfortuantely there is more crime in areas where there is a concentration of lower-income groups and gangs and drugs do exist, but it certainly doesn't affect my way of life - a little common sense goes a long way (I don't go strolling in Markham and Eg at 2am on a Saturday chatting up the guys hanging out on the corner LOL).

I am trying to picture Birchmount and Ellesmere in my mind - I believe you will be really close to the Warden entrance to the 401 which will be good for your husband to get to work in Markham - my DH works in Markham too and finds if you get on the road by 7am you miss most of the traffic. I don't think you have anything to worry about where you will be - and there is a Costco and Home Depot really close. Scarborough Town Centre will also be fairly close - couple stops up the 401 (McCowan). Toronto is a great place to live - basically anything you could want is here somewhere. I wouldn't let the reputation of Scarborough scare you - it's more media hype than reality.

PS - I realize that some people might not agree with some points in my little diatribe, so I'm ready for some differing opinions

As the previous posted put it depends on where you live...we live in "the Ghetto" of Scarborough, and feel safe. I think people know we are not trouble makers and we tend to stick to ourselves, so people don't bother us. We have lived here over 30 years so I guess that helps too! LOL
Like any other place just be aware of what is going on around you.

You may be thinking of someone else: although he did go to a Scarborough school (not sure of which one) I do know that he didn't do to King.

Scarborough isn't all that dangerous, it's just the media. Sure, there are places I wouldn't go wandering off alone in, and some places do have bad repuation but it, as someone said perviously, it is mostly the media.

Congratulations on your job and welcome to Scarborough! :wave2: Maybe we can all organize a DIS meet sometime...

Yes, his name is familiar - I'm sure my parents would know (of) him, since they are former teachers/politicians, and long time Scarborough residents.... Small world!
