We are moving to El Paso in December and would love any advice or information on the city. We are excited about the move but I am a little nervous because it is so big. TIA

When I was a kid, my dad was in the Army stationed at Ft. Bliss.

El Paso seemed big to this kid, but we spent most of our time on base. I did enjoy riding motorcycles in the desert area behind our house.

Juarez, Mexico was fun to visit back then, i don't know if it still is.

Sorry I wasn't any help!

Thanks Fort Bliss is where we are headed. Unfortunatly Juarez is off limits to military member and do not think I would go with out my husband.

hi i am from el paso...i don't live there right now because my husband works for dept of homeland security so we are currently elsewhere in TX..but oh how i wish to go back! el paso is a city of about 700,000 people...and the weather is great!. of course it is in the desert so it is very hot in the summer...but very low humidity. there are beautiful mountains and sunsets and an active cycling community. there are 2 major malls,1 smaller mall, and an outlet mall...lots of smaller shopping centers, restaurants and movie theaters. a local favorite eatery is chico's tacos...ft. bliss is one of the nicest military bases and they are building lots of brand new housing..the PX and commissary right now are decent but i've heard rumors that they are expanding these to huge stores..um i could go on and on..if you have any other questions pm me and i'll try to answer them! good luck;) oh and by the way ..no WAY do you want to go to juarez mexico...

Hi Hi.. i live in el paso.

p.m. me and i can give you the name of some good places to eat and also good places to shop.

:goodvibes

El Paso is like several little towns in one big city.

i live on the westside..the other side of the mountain from where you will be living. then there is the eastside..and downtown/central.

Never Ever Never go to Juarez...it is VERY dangerous. I feel so bad for the people who have to live there.

Also..due to the elevation and the lack of humidity, in that el paso is a desert..you need to remember to hydrate hydrate hydrate... as alot of people don't drink enough water when they move here and suffer from elevation sickness.

There are some kewl places to visit near here.. ruidosa, new mexico is great for skiing..lots of resonable hotels and cottages for rent.. then there is cloud croft..it's also lovely and in new mexico. White sands is fun to go to in the fall.. you can slide down the big white sanddunes and they have picnic tables for you to eat at. There is a nice range of live music from Opera to contemporary.. Carlos Mecia was just here two weeks ago, commedians frequent here.

El Paso is hard to get used to at first.. it's very different. Yet the people are nice and the culture is rich in history.

If you need someone to talk to just private message me...and take good care with your families move..:goodvibes

As a kid, I didn't notice Juarez being so dangerous, but it was 35 years ago (omg). We didn't hang out there, just shopping through the small stores and back out. Picked up some onyx chess/checker sets, stuff like that. We only went once that I recall.

I'm from El Paso & visit often. I love the outdoor play they have each year "Viva El Paso."

I call El Paso the largest little town I know -- everyone seems to know each other, or at least they seem to. :)

My dad lived on the East Side, and some cousins on the West Side. Personally, I like the East Side better (north of the 10).

That's a shame about Juarez being so dangerous now. I remember going there when I was younger to the mercado, the glass factory, the dog races..., and when I was older to the clubs there. And it wasn't too long ago that we would still go to the mercado and to restaurants there.

For all of you from The Pass:

You Know You're From El Paso When...

You know that the only two seasons are summer and Christmas.

You know it's the first day of Spring because the wind gusts hit 50 mph.

You know that it only snows if it was at least 75 the day before.

You cringe whenever you see a CHIH MEX license plate.

You can get sunburned and wind burned in the same hour.

You can give a stranger exact directions to the Electric-Q disco in Juarez.

You don't go near the Rio Grande. Ever.

You think that anyone who lives on the West side drives a BMW and all the people on the East side are gangsters.

The only national monuments you have been to are White Sands and the Chamizal.

You have a least four T-shirts that have "In loving memory" on the back.

You know the difference between "ya'll" and "all ya'll".

You know where the "real" first Thanksgiving took place.

You thinkg Western Playland is the place to be in the summer.

You have tried to fry an egg on the sidewalk in July.

You invest a great deal of money in hair spray in the spring.

The only thing you stocked up on for Y2K were tortillas.

You know what all those letters on the mountain stand for.

You can see three different states and two countries from your backyard.

You know who Jay J Armes is.

The first place you go when you come back in town is Chico's Tacos.

When you talk about the football game, you mean UTEP.

When you are lost in Juarez at night, you can always find your way back by looking for the star on the mountain.

Seeing the Asarco tower gives you that warm and fuzzy home feeling.

You have talked about leaving for about ten years, but you are still here.

You actually get these jokes and pass them on to other friends from El Paso.

the City Data Forums has lots of great info. I found this thread that you may find helpful. I've been there several times on trips into Jaurez years ago. The weather is typically blue skies with windy springs and hot summers. Snow rare in the winter, but they do get a bit from time-to-time -- nothing that stays on the ground longer than a few hours at most.
