Saturday, I am flying RST-MSP-DTW-LAN on Northwest. There goes my luggage, LOL.

I have never been thru Detroit Metro. It looks huge on the website. Tram and subway?

How easy is this airport to move from gate to gate. Last flight is on a small plane so I expect that gate will be out in the boonies.

Thanks,

herc.

Oh, any tips on edible fast food?

I found it very easy to get around that airport. There is a neat tunnel that connects the gates. You shouldn't have a problem.

The concourse is actually one mile long!!!! There is an overhead tram that connects one end to the other. You can get on it at either end or in the middle. There is a cool tunnel that connects the smaller concourse gates C & D with the A & B gates in the main terminal. There are moving sidewalks both in the terminal and in the gate area.

It is a beautiful airport and there are great choices of places to eat and there is a food court at one end. The fountain in the middle of the main terminal is very cool!!

As to losing luggage. I have flown NWA for years and never had a problem with them. In addition, with all the new security features ala at TSA, lost luggage on NWA is rare.

I used to live 10 minutes from DTW. I found it easy to navigate and a nice airport. :)

Thanks everyone, I was kind of worried.

I'll guess I'll check my luggage and have faith as usual it'll make it to it's destination.

JL, you used to live in Detroit!

I lived in detroit for four years and was back and forth to st louis every four weeks or so.

I never had any problems finding my way.

You'll do fine.;)

Yes. South of Detroit in Riverview. We lived there for 5 years. Moved back to IA for almost 1 year so DH could take some more classes so he could practice in WI. Then we moved to WI. We have only lived here 1 year 2 months, but I LOVE it here! I HATED the Detroit area. :)

MSP and DTW both have excellent baggage tracking systems. I wouldn't be concerned about losing luggage. I had a connection 2 weeks ago on NWA and my luggage didn't make the flight, my hour connection time turned into an 11 minute connection) but NWA was very nice and had my bags delivered to me at my hotel. They were put on the next flight to my destination. Be sure to carry a small carry on with meds and one change of clothes just in case!

Baggage losses are not nearly as bad as they used to be now that the bags are all bar coded and the luggage tracking system is much more advanced.

I work in Detroit and live in the suburbs. The new Northwest terminal (a/k/a The McNamara Terminal) is very easy to navigate.
Don't worry - you should have no problem at all.

1) You are flying from MSP, and will deplane in the Main Terminal.
2) The Main terminal is one STRAIGHT area.
3) Just walk to your next gate *

* NOTE: If your gate is on the other end of the terminal, you can use the elevated tram to save the legs. If not all the way down, you can simply use the moving sidewalks.

Monica we have flown Northwest several times to WDW using Lansing, to Detroit to Orlando and back. The terminal is very easy to navigate and we have never had any problems getting to our connecting flight.

Have fun in Lansing!!

Thanks everyone for the tips and advice. I am really looking forward to seeing the Detroit Airport now. We'll check out the fountain and the food court.

Kitty, we will have fun. Weather looks good, too!

herc,

Be sure to post what you thought of the new NWA terminal at DTW when you return!

Have a good trip!

Hi,

Back from our trip. I just wanted to report Detro Metro was awesome! Lovely fountain, easy to get around. Did not ride the cool red tram, cuz we needed exercise after being on two planes by tghe time we go to Detroit.

We had excellent service from Northwest. We used the check in kiosks on both ends of our trip and it took less than a minute to check in and print passes.

All flights were on time or early departures. Pleasant travelers all around. One gal offered to switch seats with my son so he could sit with me (didn't ask her) . Another traveler got my bag out of overhead without being asked when he heard me tell DS I'd get the bag out when aisle was clear. A lady offered me her new Goodhousekeeping magazine to readin while sitting in a gate area. NW attendants pleasant and helpful

Northwest fares are high, but I can't complain because they get the job done very well!.

Thanks, Herc, for the update.

Glad you enjoyed the NWA terminal in Detroit. It is a very nice terminal. NWA is a much better managed airline than it used to be. I fly them occasionally when I need to go somewhere SWA doesn't fly!
