Lately I have been soooooooo tired. All I want to do is sleep and coffee just isn't helping. I go to bed at a decent hour and get up at 630, usually 6 or so hours of sleep a night. Then I come home from class and all I want to do is take a nap! I used to take a 30 minute cat nap and wake up refreshed for work or to study, but latey it is like I just can't get enough sleep! I took a 4 hour nap on Friday, I was horrifed! Then I wake up, and feel like I could go right back to bed. ANd I still go to bed early. I just feel tired all the time!

I spoke to the NP today at my PCP office, and she insists I am depressed. I am not! lol. Just tired. My TSH is a little high, but they already increased my meds for that. I just had bloodowrk like 3 months ago and all seemed normal. I wonder if that is all it is? I can't help but think it is something physical. They want to give me antidepressants, I dont think I need them. I am not depressed, just tired!

Anyone experience this? Maybe I am getting sick and my body is trying to fight it off. I just can't continue to sleep away so much time, I have work to do!

Have you considered having a sleep test done?
My constant lack of energy was due to sleep apnea.

Perhaps your body simply needs more than 6 hours of sleep? I can't function for an extended period if I don't sleep for at least 7 hours each night!

It is a new thing, I never had this problem before. I have always been a peppy morning person. (annoying, lol I know) I have alwyas popped right up when the alarm went off. This constant need for sleep has been the last 3 weeks or so.

It does sound like your sleeping habits are out of whack, taking a four hour nap would wipe me out for the rest of the day! I would try getting on a super regular schedule with 7 or 8 hours.

I would have a full Thyroid screen done-with an endocrinologist if you can. If that is ok, I would have other testing done to rule out any other medical causes (besides depression). In the mean time, I would try getting more than 6 hours of sleep. Do you need an alarm clock to get up in the morning? If so, you probably aren't getting enough sleep.

What kind of blood work was done?

Low iron and low Vitamin D levels can make you tired.

People with thyroid issues sometimes have low levels of both iron and D.

herc.

I suffer from hypothyroidism (have been on meds for it since I was in 8th grade, and I'm 21 now), and that causes extreme fatigue in my case.

If I were you, I'd try getting more than 6 hours of sleep, just to see if it gives you more energy. Also, perhaps consider your diet? I just finished a college nutrition course, and what you eat can definitely either boost or decrease your daily energy. I've found that in my case, what I eat makes a big difference. Maybe look up some energy-boosting foods! :thumbsup2

I would definitely steer clear of the anti-depressants if you don't think you need them. No one else should be telling you if you're "depressed" or not, especially if you don't think you are.

Good luck with everything!

I sleep a LOT, but that's because I take some medications that double up as heavy sedatives.

Yes and I was diagnosed with PCOS. I went to an endo to make a final diagnosis. Before I was always tired, but once they figured out what I had instead of going on meds I was given the option of seeing what happened if I focused on changing how I ate and exercising. That did a world of wonder. I lost about 40lbs in a year and am still working on losing the last 20lb and I don't always feel tired like I had been.

Yes, I did experience this and you know what? It turned out I had depression. As the psychiatrist explained it to me, you can get hit with clinical depression when everything in your life is fine and coming up roses (his words). My doctor told me that's what he thought I had, and I poo-pooed him. Turns out I ended up in the hospital (I was so tired all the time, I didn't eat), and after a week of extensive tests, turns out I was suffering from clinical depression, which runs in our family. Had I not poo-pooed my doctor, I probably would have saved myself a big hospital bill.

Well I'm going through the same thing right now - but I'm also pregnant :rotfl: The only other time I've really had that problem was when I had hyperthyroidism. My thyroid was going absolutely haywire and as a result I was exhausted.

I have been extremely tired lately (we're talking 9-10 hours of sleep a night plus having trouble staying awake in my 5:30PM class (though that might just be because its chemistry...lol))

But for me, this coincides with my muscle problems and my asthma (my 0xygen levels have been low for the past 2 weeks) so we know WHY i'm so tired but it's preventing me from functioning even close to 100%.

But you need mor ethan 6 hours of sleep a night. If I only got 6 hours a night I would be exhausted as well.

But I dont think you should completely dismiss teh possibility of depression.
I was diagnosed with depression 5 years ago when I was 15. I was exhausted, and just not functioning 100% in anything. I was convinced I was just overloaded with school and activities because I didnt FEEL liek anything was wrong. It turned out that I was clinically depressed and my therapist said that itis something that most people around you realize before you realize it yourself.

It turned out to be low iron and vitamin D for me.

Neither showed up on "regular" blood tests. I was not anemic, just very close to anemia. Over the years, my hemoglobin went from 14.5 to 11.5. Still in the normal range but the 11.5 was very low normal.

Many doctors tried to throw antidepressants at me but I just knew it was physical. One doctor decided to run a ferritin test which checks your iron stores. Mine as a "3". It should be about "70." After about 6 weeks on iron supplements I felt SOOOOO much better. I am know working on the vitamin D issues.

This happens to me every winter-- it's completely seasonal. It would be such a struggle to get up before 9 to go to work and then weekends, if I let myself, I could sleep until 1:00 pm! This started in my late teens and has affected me since. Unfortunately, I sort of just suffer through the winter completely exhausted...now that there are more daylight hours, I feel better (as always).
