anyone ever wanted to trade?

Has anyone ever purchased DVC, and then found out after a little experience that you really like another one better?

Did you sell and then purchase at the preferred resort or just stick with what you've got and hope you get your preferred ressie every time?

I'm not having buyers remorse because I love my DVC but my DH and I are coming to the realization that there is another resort that we really like better and are trying to figure out what to do.

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

Yes I think someone here did trade???

When I joined OKW (DVC then) was the only game in town. Even after all these years we still love it. It has the lowest points of all the WDW DVC resorts - so I can go more often and when I bring family it is not quite the hit that the other 2-bedroom can be.

of course it probably helps that I can off season most of the time and try out the others then.

however those low points are kinda of hard to leave - so most of the time we are at OKW....

I believe Beca sold her other resorts, and then waitlisted and ROFR'd her way into all BCV.

That was her love, and worth it to have 11 months window.

We did it also. We originally bought at VWL, then stayed at OKW for the first time, and DH just loved it there. It took us a couple years to decide to do itsince unfortunately it isn't as easy as "trading" home resorts. We bought a resale at OKW, then sold our VWL points. Not sure if it was necessary to have the 11 month window, but DH didn't want to take any chances-what if Disney limited owners to their home resort (I know, one chance in a million, but to DH, that means "there's a chance")? And just maybe someday we will need that 11 month window. Also, the truth is that DH wanted to become, as one DVC sales person actually called OKW owners, an "OKW fanatic". Since we sold 175 points at VWL, and bought 210 points, I'm glad we did it too!

Sure, I believe it happens quite a bit. In my case, I have 2 SSR contracts, 300 & 100 pts respectively. Since hindsight is 20/20, if I were to do it over again I would keep the 300 pts at SSR but would have went for another resort for the other 100 pts. I paid $79 per point. If I were to "swap out" the points it would be too costly and IMO not worth it at all. For example, if I sold SSR at $80 for those 100 pts minus a brokers fee, I would probably receive about $7200. Now I can purchase another resort from Disney at $9200 for the same amount of points. That would be a $2000 loss as far as I am concerned. If I want priority at another resort, I'll keep all my SSR pts for now and add on elsewhere (with same use year) in good time. It's nothing that money can't fix. Keep in mind smaller contracts are easier to sell. This quote from tjkraz sums it up for me:

Only the most educated of first-time buyers would:

1) Know about the ability / significance of getting a specific Home resort on the resale market,
2) Know about the ability to buy points at "sold out" resorts from DVC, and
3) Know enough to really determine their favorite resort at the time of purchase.

I would imagine that there will most definitely be add ons in our future and with some experience under our belts about what we really like and don't, that decision will hopefully be easier than the initial one, just as far as location. Hope when the time comes, I can find the resort I want! :flower:

Thanks everybody!

DVC will put on on a waiting list.

If you can find a resale contract you like - I would go that way.

some people put a 2nd mortgage on their house to pay for it. using resale. most resalers don't have financing.

Something we did was add on and buy enough points for the other resorts we wanted for a Sunday through Thursday stay and then used our "other resort points" for the weekends at the 7 month window. Usually weekends don't book up as quickly as Sunday through Thursdays do.

Oooo - I like this idea a "really" lot! :Pinkbounc

Some have also added on a smaller amount of points then sold their master contract. I think I have more faith in first time buyers as a whole than dvc-NE, not that it makes any difference. Anyone should always read and understand the contents of the legal paperwork and NEVER take anything for granted, especially any verbal promised not backed up in writing such as you can always get what you want at 7 months out.

I think I understood everything I have just found from my short experience so far (in comparison to some others) that I prefer another resort. The reason I'm considering the trade is that if I want to be more sure about getting that resort every time, I'd probably feel more comfortable owning points there so that I can always take advantage of the 11 month window. We actually may hold on to what we have and just add on since our home resort might be more attractive to us as we and our children get older.

Thanks again for everyones input! :sunny:

We own at OKW, but have stayed at all the other resorts (or will - SSR 12/27 - 1/2). We have never had any problem getting what we wanted at other resorts. Sometimes we have been on the waiting list, but it has always come through. I would never sell my OKW, I just like the studios at BCV better. You should be fine with the resort you bought and not have to go through the hassle of selling and buying again. I agree with everyone else too, you will probably want to add on. I have added on 4 times!

Dean: Even if a first time buyer reads the POS in lawyer-like fashion, that still won't necessarily clue them into the "pitfalls" of the program. I'm sure they may realize they have a booking variation between home resort vs other resorts, but they won't fully appreciate what that means until they use it, maybe a few times. For people that have stated on this board that the VWL transportation is not the best, I'm sure that is not spelled out for them in the POS. I think the educated first time buyer probably knows another DVC member such as yourself that can explain what options are available. I doubt that any guide tells prospective buyers that they can ALWAYS get what they want at 7 months, I think they would say something like "you shouldn't have any problem at 7 months." The first implies a guarantee, the second one does not. Also, why would a guide deliberately steer a prospective buyer to a resale vs what is currently being built. I doubt when BCV were doing presales that guides were telling buyers that OKW may be better for them. DVC could fail miserably doing this. If the Contemporary is next, I imagine that is where the focus will be, still with the buy here, stay anywhere sales pitch. :Pinkbounc

There's no question that there are nuances even we that are knowledgeable can't agree on. My references are simply that if promises are made that are not backed up by the POS and other legal materials, that is a problem that should be known up front. As a MINIMUM, one should read all the materials.

Nope. We've never once wanted to trade our home resort for another one. We'd consider an add-on at another resort if we felt we needed more points, but we wouldn't give up our first contract.
