Directbuy it's supposedly this club where you get huge discounts on stuff for your house (everything from flooring to furniture.) you have to attend an hour and a half presentation before you can find out the prices. I'm wondering if anyone out there has joined or attended the presentation. Is it worth it? How much is it to join? They keep playing these commercials and I'm curious? We just bought a new house and I'm still trying to furnish it. thanks for any in

What channel are you seeing these commercials on? I've never heard of it, or seen one...??? Is there some sort of fee? Or a pyramid like Amway?

There's one five minutes from my house. We're planning on heading over there in a week or two to scope things out. Not joining right now...no sense in packing more stuff into this tiny rental! If we join, it will probably be in March.

I'd read a great article about them in the Washington Post two years ago, but didn't have one nearby. The reporter who did the article is very cynical, and came away impressed with their programs.

If you go to Direct Buy's website, they have a showroom invitation to see their warehouses-if you're curious, I'd suggest you do that. Check back with me in a few weeks and I might have more info, lol!

If it's the same company my neighbor told me about (sounds like it, but I forget the name she used), she has with much success. She bought a very nice dining room set. It was about $10,000 at the local furniture store and she paid under $5000! We got to talking about it because her dining room "matches" my bedroom set. Same company, same style, etc. So she went in and figured out how much I overpaid! Wasn't that nice? LOL!

I'm thinking of joining Direct Buy because we need to furnish a condo. Does everyone agree that this is a great deal? Anyone have anything negitive to say about Direct Buy? TIA

My parents belonged to one a long time ago. They furnished 2 houses and got some pretty good prices. I think it was called United Consumers or something like that.

We are members. I won't reveal the cost of membership since that is part of the agreement. I will say this. We joined 8 years ago. The first payment which is pretty steep (don't think Sam's or Costco) covers the first two years. After two years, the cost to renew is 10% of the original membership cost. We have furnished the house plus. The previous name was United Consumer Club. Now it is Direct Buy. You really do save a ton of money on furniture and jewelry. Those things tend to be marked up a lot. Look at your possible purchases over the next ten years before you decide. Every room in our house, with one exception, has been furnished through them. Advantages are price. You get really great deals. Each season you get a catalogue with some specials. There is quite a selection of items, not just furniture. Clothing, sporting goods, building supplies. Disadvantages. There is no showroom. You shop from catalogues. Sometimes the shipping and handling costs add a pretty good chunk, and I had to get the items from their warehouse to my home. If you have a truck or access to a truck, it's a big help. There were years I paid the fee and didn't use the membership at all. Other years I spend lots so it worked out.
If you think that you will be spending many thousands of dollars over the next ten years and want to save some money, go to the presentation. It's like a timeshare presentation. We knew we were joining, my brother already was a member, so I interrupted the presenter and told her just to sign us up. She didn't know how to react. They work from a script. I watched some people storm out in disgust, and I watched others really be subjected to the hard sell. I was in one day when someone was pleading their case trying to get their money back, lost job, etc. Sort of sad.
I don't regret joining. With two years left, I don't know what the renewal situation will be.
Hope this helps. Good luck with your decision.

I ended up joining and have been pleased with it. Like disneyjunky said, think about the things you will be purchasing over the next ten years. Make a list and bring it with you-it'll help you to decide whether it will be cost effective for you.

Understand that if you say no, it means you cannot go back and change your mind at a later time.

For DH and I, it made a lot of sense. We have a long list of things we plan to buy that they can supply and the value is definitely there for us. Our first purchase was a top of the line Maytag dishwasher for about the same as the base model we put in our old house last year.

Depending on the location, they may have services that work with them (contractors, auto dealerships, etc). However, this doesn't happen at all locations.

Here's my take on Direct Buy... We joined almost 14 years ago, I think the fee to join was around $1100 then, now more than double that, I think. Then the yearly dues were about $150 or so. We didn't have a nondisclosure about the price we paid for membership, but they did ask us not to disclose to retailers the price of items purchased through them if we comparison shopped.

My biggest complaint with them is that I didn't feel as though the catalogs were kept current and not all the options were available through them. For example, you could perhaps buy the same sofa you had seen in a store but they might only have half of the fabric options available. From year to year they would have the exact same book in the store with the discontinued items marked out with an X.

If you are like me and need to visually see things before you buy them, this will be hard for you. We built a new house and I actually let our membership expire. I needed the help of a designer to pull everything together. You cannot take anyone in with you unless you buy them a separate membership, big $$$, and they do not have any design assistance available.

Also be aware that you have to pick up everything you order personally. Here it was within 5 days. If you are ordering large amounts of big furniture that can be burdensome. That also means you are doing all the furniture set up.

I do believe that over the 10 years we belonged we saved more than our membership cost. It is ironic though that when I was faced with furnishing an entire house I ended up at Ethan Allen and a couple of other local furniture stores that offer design services. HTH, Amy

john,

The designers can now come in, as long as you make the appointment for them to come. They can look at the books with you in a private room, and the reps will take the prices out. The location I go to has a swatch/sample room, and they usually are allowed in there, too.

Each location can be different. I like all the reps in our office-they'll call the mfr directly on anything I have seen elsewhere or was in the catalog w/o a price. In my planner right now are two item numbers for things that we got quotes on that aren't in the price book for a curio and a 'secretary' from one of the companies they offer. It doesn't hurt to ask if they offer a mfr that you'd like to get an item not on the sheets/in the book.

Now, if only the vacuum company I want a new vacuum from will work with them, lol!
