I was just wondering if anyone has any experience selling their vehicle to Carmax... rather than "trade in" or selling "private party"?

Thanks.

We did and they gave us the Blue Book value. It was a smooth transaction and although we wished that we could have gotten more, I don't think that we would have.

We sold our van to them. It was having lots of engine issues and wasn't paid off yet (we'd bought it used). They gave us enough to pay off the loan, which is basically what we wanted. We would have gotten more for it if it wasn't having such problems.

We're big Carmax fans :)

We sold an older van there. It was a smooth hassle free transaction. They give you the blue book basically. THey gave us more than the Toyota dealership was willing to give toward a trade on a new van. We liked Carmax so much that we bought the van we wanted at Toyota, at their dealership instead...because they also sold new vehicles which we didn't realize. We thought Carmax sold only used vehicles. We got a great deal. We loved our experience.

You have nothing to loose by taking your car there for an estimate/offer. They do not charge you for giving you an estimate/offer of what they will give you for your car. The offer is good for a week or so (maybe longer) so you can shop around and figure out who will give you the most money.

We just purchased a new car and Carmax gave us $1300 more than the dealer was going to give us on a trade in.

My advice - take you car in and see what they will give you...It only takes about 30-45 min.

We sold a car at Carmax a few years ago and got Blue Book good condition price for it when I really thought it was more like fair to good condition, so we were happy. We got more than the dealer was going to give us for using it as a trade in towards our new car and it was a very easy process.

I've sold two cars to Carmax.

What they offered was close to or better than Blue Book value.

The only downside is that the process took longer than I would have hoped. It was hassle free, but the time it took them to do their processing was well over an hour before I got the check.

Bad experience with CarMax, don't want to get me started.
I'll be avoiding that place.

We were "buying" our business vehicle, Yukon XL Denali... took it to Carmax to get a cash offer - - they came back at much higher than we thought they would!

When you say Blue Book, are you referring to Low, Middle, or High Blue Book? I have an Acura TL that I have been trying to sell with no luck. I need enough to pay off the loan. I have run Blue Book, but which level to they pay on, trade value, private party, etc? My car is in mint condition. Thanks.

We sold them our Acura CL and they gave us the Blue Book value as a trade in value and the rating was "good"

We took our 2005 Ford Taurus to Carmax to see what they would give us. The car had 58,000 miles on it but was in perfect condition. They offered us only slightly more than half the KBB estimate. Needless to say we didn't trade sell it to them. One month later we took it to the Nissan dealer and they gave us 2000 more than the KBB estimate.

I love Carmax. We have bought two cars from them and sold one, had another one appraised.

I sold my old car to them, it was in decent condition BUT it needed an ENTIRE brake overhaul. I was pleased with the amount I got.

We had our Ford Explorer appraised through them and we were going to sell it to them but the vehicle has to be currently registered and insured for them to buy it. We had moved the vehicle down to Florida with us and just wanted to get rid of it. We didn't want to pay for Florida registration ... we sold it privately. That was the only 'issue' we have had before. The car was towed there ... I still don't understand why it needed to be registered and insured.

We sold our 07 Tahoe there about 6 mths ago. They gave us a fair price, better than we were looking at for a trade in at other dealerships. It worked for us. Pretty easy, though it did take over an hour, as another poster mentioned, not fun with a little one to entertain.

Thanks everyone for your input and great advice. It has been very helpful.

We've had good buying and selling experiences at CarMax. We sold a Nissan Altima there and got about $1300 more than we were offered on a trade in at another dealership. We were in a "have to buy" situation as when one of our sons outgrew the little infant car seat we couldn't fit a convertible car seat rear facing behind one of the front seats pushed back as far as DH and I needed it to be. I tried every freaking seat in Babies R Us and Burlington's Baby World or whatever they call it and not one of them would fit! We weren't planning on bumping to a van at that time but we had to in order to keep DS in a safe car seat. We may have gotten more selling it privately but not much more and the ease of handling it this way made it worth while. We got the estimate said OK to it and walked across the street to have lunch. When we came back the check was ready for us.

Buying we had an awesome experience too. DH bought an Expedition there last summer. We got a great deal on it. Someone else had it transferred from an out of state CarMax but didn't buy it. We happened to see it and were really impressed with it compared with the other comparable vehicles we had looked at. We were early in our car shopping but went ahead and bought it and figured we'd keep looking that weekend and return it in their no questions asked return period if we found better. WE didn't so we took it to our mechanic. He came back saying that everything looked great except that the ball joints were going to need to be replaced soon. He explained that if they broke the wheels would basically collapse. DH brought the mechanic's paperwork with him back to CarMax and asked if they would cover it figuring he could return it if need be. They replaced them no questions. The estimate we had been given was, I want to say around $1000 to do the work had they not covered it. While he was waiting DH got to talk to the service manager and got the list of all of the service they had done on it since buying it. DH brought that to the mechanic who confirmed that as best he could tell, yes all of that had been done. The mechanic had told DH that if he came back saying we had returned it he was planning to go behind us and buy it because it was a great deal!

Elaborating....

We drove to Carmax in Indy (not a short drive for us). I took my Ford Escape to sell and probably buy one of their cars. We needed something smaller for my daughter to start out driving. I had a problem with her starting out driving an SUV. It had 26,000 miles on it, less than 3 years old and still under warranty. It was spotless inside and out -- and I mean spotless.

They offered me the KBB "good" price instead of the "excellent", saying that that is what they offer so they can cover the cost of repairs, etc. (Remember the car is still under warranty by Ford.) They refused to even discuss it further with us. I asked to speak to somone else about it and they said the price was fixed and would not "negotiate" with me.

I took my car to the Ford dealer and got the price I wanted (3,000 more). And no, it wasn't because they put the price in on the new car we bought. We get a discount on Ford and I already knew the price I was paying and the car I was buying before I got there (internet site).

Oh, and after the deal was all set, the Ford salesman told me he had never seen such a spotless car in the seven years he had been selling cars. They sold the Escape within a couple of days.

Please elaborate ...at least a little.... :grouphug:

We also drove a bit of a distances to buy a truck my husband found and wanted on their website. We told them ahead of time that we had a down payment, a trade in and a loan secured from our insurance company for whatever the balance would be. We arrived an half and hour early for our appointment. I literally had to lead the sold called salesman by the hand for each thing that needed to be done. It took them forever to look at my husband's trade in. I kept telling them that our insurance agent's office closed at 5 p.m.

We had been there for 4 1/2 hours while they dragged their feet. As I said the truck was already picked out and all they needed to do was take our money look at the trade in and write up the paperwork so we can dash out to get the check from our insurance agent. It was 4:45 which was really pushing it cause we where about 30 minutes from home, but our agent said she'd stick around and wait for us.

Well after all this we said we'll be right back with the check to which they inform us that the plates were already transfered to the new truck and we can't take it without full payment. To which I replied, "well how are we suppose to go get the check with no vehicle to drive?"

We were told we had to secure a loan with them and once we gave them the check their loan would be canceled. That is when I totally lost it. I called them a few choice names and had a few very loud choice words flying out of my mouth. Not proud of this, but I had been pushed to my boiling point. 45 minutes later we were out of there on our way to get the check with an apology to our insurance agent telling her we would be there as quick as possible.

My last words to them when I walked out was that not only would we never buy anything from them again, but that every chance I got I would bad mouth them and tell everyone I can what had happened, plus to never buy anything from them. Morons!!
