Anyone ever rented an RV For the Trip??

We live in Va Beach, VA and we have a wonderful conversion van specifically bought for our annual road trip to WDW.

Friends of ours and their children would like to join us for a surprise 6th B-Day trip for my dd in late July. Our van will not accomodate 7 people plus luggage, so we were considering renting an RV...something like a C Class.

I've got a call in to an RV dealer in Newport News to get a quote on a diesel but I haven't heard back from them, yet. Does anyone know of about what it may cost?

The first issue here is most of the class C motor homes only sleep 5-6, and the rental companies won't let you rent to transport more than teh capacity. If you do and were to be in an accident, the insurance would be invalidated and you'd be in a heap of a problem.

Also, they can be very expensive to rent, and they get rotten gas milage. And I would think that it would probably be cheaper to fly down. There's not much privacy for two families in a single RV, and IMHO after a week with seven people in an RV, you might not be friends anymore.

We would only be renting it to drive straight through there and back. We're booked at the Contemporary for our stay! I wouldn't even consider spending a week in one with another family! Also, we can't fly since my Dd is hearing impaired and her doctor thinks both of her ear drums would rupture during a flight . That's why we bought our van...road trips are our only option. The other family have priced flying and it would be about $800 for them.

I was thinking $1300 worst case scenario on renting a RV for the road trip. That split in half would be cheaper than them flying. But, we'll see what kind of quote I can get from the local RV Renter.

Unfortunately with rental, milage, and gas, I think you are looking at closer to $1700-1800 for this rental.

I think that you will find out that your estimate is low. We rented a motor home 3 years ago and drove to the Nascar race in Bristol Tennessee. It was a 27' class C motorhome and at that time it was around $ 1500.00. It did not have a generator and the propane tanks leaked all the propane. We did rent this from a large reputable dealer and they did there best to make things right but it was still an inconvienience. You are looking for a vehical to transport your group and if you rent a motorhome you will be paying for a vehical to live in.

Long ago we own a motorhome, and drove it to Florida. Had 8 people with us and it had dual gas tanks. Gas mileage was very poor, plus we ran the generator the whole way for the A/C. We didn't stay in it there, we used it just for the ease of traveling, stayed in the resorts. If you never driven a motorhome, especially on the long haul, its a whole new experience. Give one a try before committing. Winds and big trucks make for some hairy driving, you won't be flying down the super slab at 70 like in your conversion. Depending on where you're coming from, the mountains can eat up alot of time plus nerves. Slow going up and break neck going down. We took ours once, that was enough.

Have you given any thoughts to Amtrak ? We use them exclusively, I won't fly and won't drive anymore either. We're from northeast Ohio, and for me and wife, round trip it costs us no more than 450.00. Ita about 27 hours for us, lay over in D.C. but we usually pull into Kissimmee around 10:30 am and cab to WDW, cost 38.00. We never used a car on property, just Disney transportation since 1977.
