Anyone ever rent an ECV?

Hi, I posted this on the disAbilities board,but since we are leaving this evening, it's kind of urgent so I am posting here also.

I fell and twisted my knee yesterday. I didn't know how I was going to get around the world with the rest of my family until my DD suggested I rent an ECV. Great idea I think, but now I don't know if I will need a doctors note

I haven't gone to the doctors because I've done this before to my knee andI just usually put on a knee brace and take Motrin. I really don't have time to see a doctor before we leave in the afternoon and I really don't need to as I've been through this before with my knee.

Anyway, long question short, does anyone know if I will need to show a doctors note to the WDW cast member before I am allowed to rent an ECV?

But it's worth it if you need it.

My wife rents an ECV, and no doctor's note (or anything else) is required (other than the moolah, as PP notes...)

No doctors note or explanation needed, just money! I think it's like $65 and then you get $20 back when you return it.

It's cheaper to rent from Walker Mobility. They can deliver it to the hotel. I got an email the other day about a special they're having right now. It's a scooter savings promotion right now for $25 a day. Call 1.888.scooter. If you call soon, they could probably have it at the hotel before you get there.

Thanks to everyone for such quick replys.
I think renting an ECV (something I once thought I would NEVER do) is going to truely be a great help for me this trip.
Now that I know I won't have to squeeze in a doctors appointment tomorow that has cinched it for me. I will bring my money, minus a doctors note, and I'll be all set for a few days of pain free park touring

I would suggest going over to the disABILITIES Forum. One of the first threads is the disABILITIES FAQs. On Post #3 we have a lot of information for people with mobility problems including information about several off-site vendors where we have consistently gotten good reports. And the ECVs from the offsite vendors are less expensive than Disney's and much better. To get directly to the disABILITIES FAQs from here just click on the link in my signature.

I started using Walker last year, great service. I have one waiting for me next week, I also got the email, I called and they gave me the new price!

My FIL rented a scooter for 5 days from Buena Vista Scooter Rental. They are located near the Boardwalk resort. They will deliver it to your resort and pick it up. You may rent a canopy to provide some shade.

If you think you will need it more than a day or two this could be a significant savings. You will have use if it outside the park (versus renting at Disney) but they will have to drive it onto buses, etc. I believe if you mention Allears.net there is a discount.

Some tips we learned before he rented his was to bring a garbage bag or poncho to put over the seat/steering column to keep it dry from sudden rain shower. Also bring a towel or two in a plastic bag to wipe off anything that may get wet.

I rented ECVs during my January 2008 visit. I got a lot of great support from the folks on the disABILITIES thread about it. In my case, being extremely overweight had given me very bad back problems, and made it difficult to walk even 100 yards. I felt like I wasn't "disabled enough", and felt like everyone would be looking at me or just think "she's just too lazy to walk". And I guess I felt a lot of guilt over the situation.

The thing was, even as hyper sensitive as I was, I didn't notice anyone being rude to me or treating me as if I was somehow in the wrong. Not just CMs - who were great - but the other guests weren't rude either.

I didn't rent something for the week - which would've been SO MUCH cheaper - because I didn't want to be a bother to the other riders with the buses (especially since I was capable of being mobile). But just walking around the resort and to and from the parks can be very, very straining. But I was there alone with a child, so I couldn't take advantage of the wheelchairs they had available at the parks & resorts for moving a guest to and from the buses.

Another thing to keep in mind - on busy days, those ECVs at the parks are gone by midmorning (all rented out) - obviously they get returned throughout the day, but there's no telling if there will be one available if you don't get there early.

On a final, personal note - I had gastric bypass surgery last summer. I've lost 102 lbs to date, walked in the Royal Family 5k this past March & am looking forward to my next trip in December. I walk 2 miles before work every day (at 4:00 AM!), and hike about 5 miles each day on the weekends! God willing, no more ECVs for me - EVER!!!

Another thing to keep in mind is that if you rent directly from the parks, the ECV stays in that park. That's great if you're spending the whole day at one park, but if you need it to get back to and around your hotel, you should consider renting from an offsite vendor.
