We are moving soon and I would like to paint a chalkboard wall in DS room, I was also thinking about using some magnetic paint underneat, but I have heard that you have to do like six coats to make it work! Has anyone ever done this and if so could you post pics of how it looks, TIA!!!

I don't have pics but I did this for DS when he was little. I will probably do it for DD when she gets older. How much you need depends on how big of an area you intend to make a chalkboard. Read the container to see how much you will need. DS loved his!
If you want to go another route...they make paint to make a wall a dry erase wall. It is called Idea Paint. You can google it but it is wicked cool!

I'll try and post a pic in the morning. We did this in our kitchen. It's great for keeping track of what you need at the store, chores, etc.

It was very easy to do.

My dad did it for me when I was little, before chalkboard paint was commonly available. My mother really didn't want that color painted on the walls, so Dad painted particle board, cut it wainscoting height, and put it around the lower walls of the room. He attached it top and bottom with molding, and sealed the seams with paint. As another good deed for mom, the bottom molding was upside-down narrow cove molding; it made a great chalk-rail and caught the dust so that she could easily vacuum it.

I don't have a chalk board wall, but I do have a chalk board table. I found a smallish wooden table at a yard sale and painted it with chalk board paint, which is basically just flat black paint. My kids love it! It is their homework table, they have had it for 4 years and still use it almost everyday at 9 & 7. I think we probably did 3 or 4 coats, just because we had so much to use, why waste it, ya know.

Changing the subject slightly, I saw STICK ON chalkboards in a variety of shapes and designs at Hancock Fabrics on Saturday.

They were made by Wallies, which are small wallpaper cut-outs. My daughter had some in her room once: They were fairies. They were great: They went up easily, and when she outgrew them, we just soaked them with a warm washcloth and peeled them right off. Based upon my experience with that, I'd suspect this goes up like wallpaper and is a good product.

The magnetic paint is bumpy and I didn't like it for that reason.

I used the chalkboard paint (Benjamin Moore) under the chair-rail in Sunday School class on one wall. The kids loved it. It's very easy to do!!!

We painted the half-wall in our kitchen with chalkboard paint. I was going to do the magnetic underneath, but I was worried that the chalkboard would get scratched as the kids moved the magnets around. I'm not sure that would really happen, but we skipped that step. We did 3 coats of the chalkboard paint. It looked pretty good after the second coat, but we still had some left, so we did the third coat. We've had it for about 18 months, and the kids LOVE it! I do clean up a fair amount of chalk dust off the floor, though. I don't think I'd want it in a room with carpet, but a damp towel makes cleanup super easy on the kitchen vinyl.

we painted a chalk board on DD's wall. It came out great, but we used a spray paint for it which I advise against using. It left a very fine layers of black dust EVERYWHERE! We didn't realize it until later that day when I noticed black footprints all over the house. Once we figured it out, everything in the room had to be washed down several times to get rid of it:headache:. So I would say go for it if but use a regular paint, not spray paint!

We didn't paint it ourselves but the previous owners painted a partial wall which looks like a cave with chalkboard paint, its pretty cool if you have kids. I'm curious as to what it's going to be like to try to paint over someday :confused3 I'm hoping we have kids so I don't have to paint over it someday

We made a chalk board on one wall and a magnetic area on another for my son. We had to use 4-6 coats of each and I still don't think we used enough for the chalkboard. I painted over the magnetic paint and it works fine. After all that work he barely even uses it!

We did the magnetic board under chalkboard paint. Don't bother with the magnetic part. We also had to do many, many coats and it hardly holds anything.

But we love the chalkboard part. I'll look for a picture.

I took this as we were decorating her room. You'll see the chalk looks good. Those are little magnets I made (teeny pieces of wood with decopaged sayings on them. Magnets on the entire back). They are staying up on hope only. You look at them wrong and they fall down. So IMO not worth the money or time spent.
