Anyone ever make a ghost costume?

DS3 has wanted to be a ghost for Halloween since August. I bought a sheet, put it over his head and cut the bottom off of it. Then I cut holes for his eyes, mouth, and arms. It looked great and he loved it. Today we had a Trunk or Treat (really cool--we just went from car to car in the parking lot) event at our church. The poor guy couldn't see a thing most of the time because the eye holes wouldn't stay in one place. I think the problem was the wind because at home, he'd wear it around and it seemed fine. So--before we head out again in a few days, I need to make this work! Can anyone give me any ideas that don't require a lot of sewing or anything? I'm good with scissors, but that's about it:blush:

I thought of getting some clothes line rope and giving him a belt to keep the air from blowing up inside the costume, but then he won't have that "ghost" look. DH thinks we need to somehow figure out how to tie something around his neck, without choking him to death, of course!:thumbsup2

Any quick fixes?:confused3

I've never tried it, but what about having him put on a knit hat first and then using safety pins to pin the sheet to his head?

Cut a hole for his head and paint his face white!

Paul was a ghost last year, when he was three. We ended up doing what I described above, because I knew it would be impossible for him to see with the sheet over his head. Here are some pictures. He got LOTS of great comments on his costume!

This might work!

We've discussed cutting a hole for his head and painting his face, but he really wants the sheet over his head.

I think I will try the pins and hat idea and maybe cut the eyeholes a little bigger.

Any other ideas?

There was a ghost at a party we went to last night, and he had like a rubber band holding a portion of the back so it would keep the part over his head tight. I don't know how to describe it other than imagine a pony tail, only with the sheet and not hair.

Cut lots of holes in it and explain that "I had trouble with the scissors." (Like Charlie Brown.) :lmao: That way when it slips he can find a new set of holes. Sorry, I am sleep deprived. Good luck with the knit hat trick.

Following your belt idea, can you make a belt out of a light-weight length of chain? You know, since ghosts groan and rattle chains. :)

I think the problem is that he turns his head and the sheet does not follow so the eyes do not line up. Not the best for looking both ways at a street.

How about make the body sheet go up to the neck. then a seperate piece for the head that would hang low onto the shoulders but would still move with his head easier.

(just make sure there is no point on the head part)

What about just a face hole.. Bobby pin it to his hair so it stays on his head but keep just his face in the big hole and add talcum / baby powder or even flour to his hair if it shows and face.. or even a cold cream but that may get messy when he has an itchy

Good Luck :wizard:

The year my son was a ghost, we just used very sheer fabric. No need to cut out holes for his eyes, and he had a filmy ghostly look. Just be careful the fabric isn't too long, or he'll be walking on it. That was the easiest costume ever.

We had this same issue when DS was three. DS had obviously had a picture in his mind of how it was going to look with his eyes just looking out of holes. MIL made his costume for us and she had a cut out with elastic around it to go around his face. It really annoyed him and quite honestly still didn't stay put very well. He ended up wearing the pirate costume his brother had worn the year before. Good luck finding a solution.

along the bobby pin line...we took a hair comb/headband and glued it to the inside of the sheet that way it stayed place around the head

Get the double sided tape that women use for when the clothes are alittle to revealing and they want them to stay covered in a certain place. Its very user friendly and doesn't pull or tug on the skin. Its clear and isn't noticable at all. You would put it on the material and it would stick to his skin.

I got mine at Bed, Bath & beyond, but have seen it in several other stores. A craft store may sell it also.

Thanks for all the ideas! I went and bought white make-up and hairspray before I picked him up from preschool. He gets in the car and announces that he is just going to wear Buzz Lightyear from last year. Works for me!
DD6 has a Snow White costume so now they will be in the same category at the parade tonight. Now, everyone say a little prayer that Buzz still fits. If I remember correctly, it was a plenty big last year.

Suppose Wal-mart will take all the unopened face paint and hairspray back?
