OUCH...I was up all night, not one minute of sleep. My ear hurt so bad and it was so clogged I felt like my head was in a vice.

After crying for hours and putting in drops of alcohol/vinegar, it finally cleared about 7 this morning and it's draining now (TMI).

How does one remedy this better than drops and praying it'll clear up? I didn't even know I had it until it just sort of hit me and now i'm at work and I think I got 30 minutes of sleep since 9 last evening.

Cortisporin, a perscription ear drop preparation usually works well. To prevent it, a couple of drops of alcohol after showering, swimming and bathing so the water in your ear evaporates quickly and doesn't give organisms an opportunity to grow.

My oldest DS got it so bad one time that we took him to the ER. Not only was it very painful for him but his temp went up to 104!!

I got it when I was about 13/14 after spending a week at a Lake. I agree the worst pain ever!

Hope it goes away soon.:(

You should go to the dr. My dd had it last year and it got so bad they almost sent us to have a wick put in to hold the medicine down.

The vinegar/Alcohol seemed to work...and on line they say that helps dry out the ear after swimming. I'll have to look for the stuff in the drug store.

I was so mean to my DH this morning, crying and carrying on like a crazy person. My ear then popped, drained, and now it's feeling a lot better.

Poor DD, 14, gets this several times a summer and often she will get an inner ear infection as well. She gets medication from the drs. and tries hard not to get her ears wet.....using ear plugs or not going under the water. Feel better.

HB wear earplugs when you swim. It may help prevent you from getting this again! :D

My son has it right now! He gets it every summer. I guess his ears really don't drain well. I used to get water in my ears all the time as a kid but I never had it get infected. The water would eventually come out on its own and all was well.

In my son's case we had to get some antibiotic drops. We have also been told to use Swim-Ear (alcholol) everyday after he swims to keep the ear dry. They told me not to use it, though, while the ear was infected.

I used to get this fairly often too... was a competitive swimmer when I was younger. Definitely get the prescription drops if it is a recurring problem! Hope you are feeling better and get a good night's rest tonight!

DD had a few years ago and had to get drugs (drops) from the doc. Cat also had it and had to also get drops (yes you are reading that right).

Once you get it it is best to go to the doctor and get antibiotics and ear drops. For prevention, 50-50 solution of vinegar and alcohol. Use a few drops in the ear after swimming or showering. This was recommended to me by a friend who is a pediatrician and in a former life a lifeguard.

When you say your ear popped and drained are you sure your eardrum did not rupture. There is usually a lot of relief from the pain once that happens. I would get it checked.

My poor DH has swimmers ear and an ear infection from our beach trip. The pain is gone, but he is still bothered by the ear being stopped up. He has been walking around for a week & 1/2 w/ his head tilted to the left! He got some drops and antibiotics from the dr. If it isn't better by the time those are gone in a couple of days, I am going to make him go back.

Good luck, I hope it clears up soon.

Hmm...well it does feel a lot better...but I can still feel a lot of popping and clearing...and when I bend to the side it drains a little bit.

Now i'm scared....I hope I didn't do anything bad like that. I'll see how tonight goes and if it's still bad i'll probably go to the doctor this week. Ugh.
