I was just wondering about this question. My son's elementary school is holding an auction to raise some much-needed funds. It occurred to me that a donation of some of our DVC points for a Disney vacation might bring in a good sum of money for the school. I love my DVC, but would be willing to part with points to support a good cause. :goodvibes

Since I'm relatively new to DVC, I'm wondering if this is even possible. Has anyone had experience with anything like this?

TIA!!!

Yes, we donated 5 nights (Sun-Thursday) in an OKW studio for our son's private high school auction a few years back. They combined it with some frequent flyer miles donated by another party, and had it as their main auction item. I put together a packet of information on OKW and DVC for the auction so folks knew all about the no-housekeeping etc. The family who won it ended up buying DVC while they were there!

Yes, I did this earlier this summer. We donated a Sun-Th stay in a studio of the winner's choice (depending on availability) and it was very successful. The sad part is that the winner has not gotten back to me despite having left messages for him. Now I am worried that he will show up years down the line and try to claim the trip. I didn't expect that and unfortunately, did not put an expiration date on the prize. So that would be my word of warning to you. Good luck!

When I donated mine, I excluded holiday times and specified which months they could use it. The couple who won actually went during the October teacher's break, but that was before F&W was a happening event!

It's great that you are willing to give up points to help the school. However, keep in mind a quirk of the tax code if you do. By donating points, you get no tax deduction. On the other hand, if you rent the points for cash, and then donate the cash to the school, you will get a tax deduction.

Why is that? We were given a recipt for dollar amount donated after the auction took place. We were able to use that on our donations deduction for our state and federal tax forms.

Almost:

I had donated a 5 night Early December OKW stay to a Philadelphia based charity's auction.

But the auction got postponed, too close to travel dates, so I cancelled the ressie and will be sending a check to the charity.

So I tried, and I will try again!

The donation of points or a DVC trip are not tax deductible. The IRS will only allow deduction if the entire timeshare is donated in full. There has been discussion on this in the past on the boards. Here is a recent thread and another where it was discussed.

They give you a receipt like they do everyone. They don't know what's deductible and what's not. The IRS specifically says it's not.

Thanks! You folks are full of helpful information. I haven't been around for a while, but whenever I log on, I always learn something.

Many thanks!
