Anyone Else Using Chantix to Quit Smoking?

Wow! So many DISers (or family/friends of DISers) using this!!!!

And to those using other quit aids, keep it up! Whatever help we need gets us to the same goal: Not having to structure our theme park days around the DSAs ... among other things, of course ;)

And thank you once again, C. Anne, for the bumps. I'm surprised even here locally at how few know about this new drug.

FWIW, Chantix seems to have broken one of my other addictions/habits, too. I no longer bite my nails. About a month into my quit, I just looked down and my fingers and nails were beautiful. I thought it was just a quirky thing with me until I looked at my mother's hands, as well as my hubby's (we all started together). All of us have stopped biting and chewing without even realizing it.

I have my prescription filled. I have not yet started it. I am scared of the nausea and stomach upset. I hope it is not too bad. What did you do if you had it? How irritable are you on the Chantix? My dh, dd, and ds may move me out of the house. The last few times I quit were awful on everyone.

Good for you! Check out that link I provided earlier on in this thread for a huge support group. Lots of tips for all sorts of things, ranging from craves/urges to what others have done to make the med work best for them (physicians seem to be in the dark about a lot of stuff about Chantix -- mine told me to check the internet to see what others are doing for nausea!).

Not everyone gets the stomach issues. I had them horrible; DH had them mildly; my mother didn't have them at all.

First, take the med with a meal and at least 12 oz of water. Not a piece of toast or a cracker. A meal. If you're not a breakfast person, you're about to become one. I get constipated if I even think about a piece of cheese, so if you're prone to constipation, think fiber, fruit, daily walks and plenty of water. My breakfast is a rather large bowl of FiberOne, followed by a glass of pure fruit juice. Lunch and dinner I kept the same as I did before the pill.

Even this did not help the nausea. Mind you, the first week, I had no nausea. That was the week on the half doses. Once you start the second week, you're taking a whole 1-milligram pill twice a day. Made me horribly nauseous. I actually turned green. What worked for me like a charm was cutting those 1-milligram pills in half and taking them four times a day instead of twice. So a half with breakfast, a half with lunch, a half with dinner and then a half right when I'm going to bed.

Irritability: The first few days once you put the smokes down are the worst, but NOTHING compared to previous quits, IMO. I slept a lot. And not like during the day. I just went to bed a bit early. You should have a "plan," tho, of how you're going to handle your craves. Will it be gum or something similar? A small straw? A walk? What about in the car or on the phone? After dinner? You'll be able to ease into these situations your first week (s) while you're on the med and smoking and see how irritable you are.

Seriously, I'd liken the cravings/urges to anything you're not physically addicted to and can't have at this moment (don't think long-term -- it's one day at a time for those of us with addiction). What's your most favorite food in the world? If you don't have access to it right now, are you going to go out of your mind until you get that? Probably not. It will be a thought, like, "Man, that would be nice right now." And then, poof, it's gone.

That's been my, DH & my mother's experiences with irritability. Remember, Chantix gives you a continuous feed of dopamine. That's the stuff that makes us "happy" from chocolate, nicotine and an orgasm (watch your desire for chocolate and sex go right out the window for a while). So it really seems to take care of the irritability -- at least substantially decrease it from any other quit I've tried.

Best of luck! You can totally do it.

My grandmother used this for a few days but it made her sleep all day. She didn't even have energy to do the dishes.

Another bump for those interested in the great info here..:thumbsup2

Ok I wanted to say thanks to the OP for the info!!

I called my doc on Thursday and his nurse was on vaca so I got a little bit of a run around but left a message for him to call me back on my cell phone--the girls and I walked up to the warehouse to get soem grass seed and such and on the way back I stopped at the crossroads---Right would take me to the clinic--left would take me home---I turned right because I would have hated to get all the way home and find a message on my home phone and have to walk all the way back up.

I get to the clinic and the registration desk went and got the fill in nurse and she went to the new doctor((smoking doc no longer doing it)) and he told her to get me an appt--so she managed to get me in right away!!! I spoke with him for about 10 minutes and he sent the RX to the pharmacy and told me it was ready to go get it!!!

I started yesterday!! So here's to hoping it does the trick and this battle will be over!!!!

Fantastic, Irishbosoxfan! :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo:

And you're so welcome. I never dreamed quitting would be as easy as it has been on this med. I truly hope it's the same for you. That topix support forum is extremely active and full of really supportive folks. It's not Pfizer-sponsored/related; just folks going on the same journey with a very new medication.

You can do it :)

ETA: Methinks I need to change out my avatar. That's my brother and his girlfriend behind that HUGE drink, but that's my cigarette in the ashtray. No more of that!

Thanks again for the info! I had never heard of this RX!! My DH is deployed right now and he called yesterday and I told him about it--He said if it works for me,he knows it'll work for him!!

You may have helped me to be able to run again!! I am so excited!!!

As for your avatar---ask on the photography board if someone there can edit out the ciggy for you!! I'm sure they'd be more than happy to do it for you!

Bumping this back up again for anyone who may be interested in this info..:thumbsup2

How's it going? :)

Day 7 smoke free for me!

Pack a day for about 20 years. Started Chantix and quit on day 8. I didnt get the taste or smell funny effect. Just said I had to do it. It hasnt been totally easy but way easier than I expected it to be. I kept wondering what "vivid" meant and I guess I am having the dreams now. Not scary - just feels like I am in a non stop movie, not every night, but its been kinda cool. And I can remember everything. I havent really had any other side effects, just feel kind of off, but that could still be just adjusting to no nicotine.

Question for anyone who signed up for the online help. It's not keeping time anymore? Everyday I go to it it says - tomorrows the big quit day and I am like - no its been a week already :rotfl: The online help is kind of silly, but I will take any support I can get.

Celery sticks work great too - especially if you low carb like we do!

Good luck all!

I haven't had much luck with online help either. The dates are wrong and it is silly. My dreams are bizzare but not nightmares. This IS a miracle pill. My kids cannt believe it has been 3wks and 2days since I quit. Smoking 3packs a day for 30 something years. It is also in the news that they are going to use this for gambling and alcohol addictions. Down the road it will probably help with all addictions. Now if I lose weight with Chantix I will go around the country telling people.:rotfl: Good luck to all!!!! I like the help I get from the Dis people. It's good to know you are not alone.

Let's try to keep this bumped to the first page for folks looking for info and support..:thumbsup2

How's it going? :)

Thanks C.Ann for bumping this. It's been 3wks and 2 days. The 1st time i got in the car I didn't even think about how I used to light up. I couldn't even find a ink pen to stick in my mouth:rotfl: I do much better now. It is amazing that it really isn't as hard as I thought it was going to be. Thanks for all the help and ideas.

I'll try to keep "bumping" every time I get the chance.. There is quite the "buzz" about the success of this new medication, so this thread should be where people who are interested can see it..:thumbsup2

Congrats on your success!! That is yet another amazing story!! :goodvibes

I tried welbutrin for another thing I had a problem with. I have to say from my experience and talking to my friends it is not for Hyper people. I had massive panic attacks and felt like I was tweaking.

I quit cold turkey over 3 years ago but I have to say I turned MEAN as sin for the longest time. I mean like pms times 100. I would just fly into rages without my smokes, but I am too stubborn to go back to smoking.

I was wondering since my husband still smokes and quit for 6 month and was also possesed if chantix helps with that? My husband has to work with the public and I think that is his biggest concern how I guess edgy is a word he uses you get not smoking. LIke a crack addict without a fix.

I'm so glad to have found this thread! I started Chantix Saturday a.m. I immediately suffered from nausea but decided I would just "deal" with it since a few hours of icky was better than suffering from a smoke-related illness for a lifetime (FYI - I tried eating in the a.m. with my pill but it only made me feel worse - I have a problem with eating in the morning, I guess).

But, it's 4:52 a.m. as I write this, I've been up for hours and while I'm very tired I won't dare go back to sleep. I had nightmares what little time I did sleep tonight and I can't get them out of my mind to be able to snooze again.

Since Saturday I was actually rather amused by how vivid my dreams were but until tonight they weren't nightmares (the description of watching a movie is exactly correct! I never knew my mind was so creative ;) )

I'd heard about this side effect and was worried (I had night terrors when I was on the patch and had to quit immediately!). I took my first dose of 2 pills yesterday (the first few days are only in the a.m.) and perhaps that is the difference.

I'm worried that I'll end up letting these nightmares get in the way of my taking the pills. My teammates at work are getting a little tired of me being tired. Even when I just "dreamed" I woke up many times during the night.

Can anyone assure me that maybe these dreams (or nightmares) slow down or cease after being on Chantix for awhile?

Just an aside - DH started the same day I did and sleeps as peacefully as ever. He's snoring upstairs right now :) So it most certainly won't happen to anyone who takes Chantix. I don't want to deter anyone from trying it (I can tell that I will be able to quit on day 8; hard to describe but I can just tell). I just want feedback on if my current situation will improve. And I have always, ALWAYS been prone to nightmares. It's gotten better as I've grown older so I'm not longer "used" to it.

I am on day 13 of the medication--Here's me experiences so far.

Day 1-3(.5mg) Nothing, didn't bother me at all

Day 4-7(.5mg 2x a day) Tired,dead tired,wanted to sleep so bad-Also had a headache for 3 days straight

Day 8-9(1mg 2x a day) Fine no bother

Day 10-12(1mg 2x a day) NAUSEOUS so sick to my stomach I don't want to move for fear of throwing up

Day 13 Just took it a little bit ago-nothing yet

The dreams so far haven't been too far out--I have always had a busy dream schedule with the ability to remember them so nothing out of whack there-but I do find myself dreaming about sex a lot.

Also I have woken up at least twice a night to go pee, something I never did before--I have found that while I sleep better at night(was on meds for insomnia) I sleep lighter.

I am still smoking--I bought a carton and said I would quit when it's gone but Ugghh I have 6 packs left and I get a sick feeling thinking about finishing them off

I wonder if my severe nausea of the last 2 days is my bodies way of saying "just quit already" but if it is it should know that I have ALWAYS smoked even when violently ill--I don't know.

My mom and my DH said with as sick as I've been I should just stop taking them((yesterday I spent the whole day on the couch)) but if this is part of it then I want to keep going! I want to quit! And if it means I have to be sick then so be it.

22 days smoke free for me. I still have the dreams, I'd say 4 or 5 times a week with at least one of those being scary. I do get slightly nauseaus (sp?) in the morning but I also cant eat much in the am so its only with a piece of toast or something. Doesnt bother me at night as I take it with supper.

Do I still crave a cigarette - yup - but I can get past it. The other day was the hardest day yet as we went to a cookout where litterally about 75% of the people were smoking. That was tough but I was proud of myself afterwards. I have also noticed that I am no longer biting my nails and I am treating myself to a manicure this weekend!

In my dream last night I bought a carton of cigarettes and was sneaking around trying to figure our where to hide it - and I hid them in my DH car! ya - great hiding place! lol

Good luck all!

I found that if i took my pill 5-10min after I ate I didn't get naueated. And I have to drink full 8oz h2o with it. And I would mention to your doc as to u getting up to pee at nite to make sure you have no kidney problems. When you drink your h2o is it room temp or ice h2o? Try it both ways to see if it helps the nausea. Good luck and keep us informed. We'll all get thru this with our support team here on the Dis.:)

Wow ... thanks for all the bumps, C. Ann!

51 days smoke-free here. I still can't believe it. I was a 2 1/2 pack a day smoker for the last five to seven years; 1 - 2 packs per day for the 15 or so years before that.

Way back early in this thread, I posted a link to a Topix forum for people who are quitting with Chantix. If nothing else, it really just goes to show you how different everyone's quit is, how personal it is and how so many people react so differently to Chantix -- while they're taking it, as well as their reactions once off the med, too.

Here it is again:

Here is June's thread:

Kathymc: Whooo-hooooo!!!!!! WTG on 22 days!!!!!!!!

:woohoo:  :thumbsup2 :cheer2: :grouphug: :goodvibes

I stopped biting my nails, too!!! As did my mother. Neither of us even noticed at first. Also, we are wine people. We love wine to catch a buzz with, and we enjoy it for pairings. Strangest thing was the hubby, my mother and I had ZERO desire to have a glass of wine just to have a glass of wine. With meals, sure, we enjoyed our wine, but it was so different, say, at happy hour or just to have a glass of wine watching tv or something. Also, I can't stand the taste of beer or vodka. I'm off the med now, and I still can't tolerate the tastes of those drinks.

Irishbosoxfan: I slept much lighter on Chantix, too. I normally sleep like a rock, but the slightest thing woke me up on the med.

I kept "waiting" for something to kick in with Chantix and some "thing" to make me suddenly not want to smoke. It never happened. I smoked on the med 15 days, my mother 24, and we finally just let our quit dates pick us. We both said that when this pack is finished, we just won't buy anymore. We both expected to be going positively out of our minds within hours of that last smoke, but it just never happened. I was very skeptical, too. I even made a bet with myself that if I was going out of my mind, I'd just go buy a pack. I never went "out of my mind." The cravings were absolutely tolerable.

I also found that a lot of the side effects disappeared or lessened once I put the smokes down. I was having a lot of trouble mentally on the drug and smoking, and I felt much better in that regard once I quit and just let the med do its thing on its own. I never was able to get past the nausea, even with huge meals, milk, and copious amounts of water. I did fine with cutting my pills in half and taking a half four times per day (with meals and at bedtime) instead of the two pills twice a day. I also found it helped my cravings the minute I woke up from a night's sleep. I really liked taking a half right at bedtime.

WDWBarb: From my experience, the dreams don't change throughout treatment. I had the vivid dreams right up until I stopped the med. You should absolutely speak to your physician, call Pfizer or check out those forums I posted earlier to see if anyone can offer you a suggestion. I can't help but wonder if maybe reducing your evening dose or splitting up your p.m. dose to maybe mid afternoon and then early evening might help. Definitely don't give up. I thought I wouldn't be able to tolerate the nausea, but I was able to work with my dosages until I found a regimen I could live with.

MoniqueU: I, too, have to work with the public (and judges and attorneys, lol) and stay professional, neutral, even-keeled, and service-oriented. Chantix totally took the edge off for me. And I couldn't tolerate Wellbutrin. I was coming out of my skin the first 24 hours on that one. The nice thing about Chantix is it makes your brain think you've just had a cigarette -- all the time. It's constantly giving your brain little doses of dopamine, the "good" stuff we all liked in cigs. Best of luck to your hubby in whatever he decides!!

Disney Kid at Heart: A big whoo-hoooooo coming at you, too!!!! WTG on 23 days!!!!

:cool1: :thumbsup2  :woohoo:   :cheer2: :flower3:

It really is a miracle, isn't it? I still can't believe it. It makes quitting absolutely attainable. It's been on our news now, too, about the alcohol, and I've read online it's being tested with crack and heroin addicts. Keep up the great job!!!

Wow ... thanks for all the bumps, C. Ann!

You're welcome..:thumbsup2

Hope no one gets annoyed that I keep "bumping" this up, but I think the information in this thread is very valuable..;)

Thanks for the info plutoluvr. I read it to my husband and hope that will alleviate his concerns.

Just as an FYI, from a respiratory therapy student- who deals with this daily.

nicotine stays in your system for 72 hours. Yes, 72. If your quit day is X, then 72 hours later, your body is nicotine free. Those are the hardest 72 hours of your quit.

now- for some not so technical info....

change your habits. You associate everything you do with a cig. Get up in the AM, have coffee and a cig - change that.... Sit in a different spot to drink your AM coffee.

You pick up the phone- you have a cig- change that.... pick up the phone and 2 pens- put one in each hand...no room for a cig!

Another thing to know- my doc rx's chantix for 6 months. The only negative she has heard from this med is that people stop taking it too early. thats why she rx's 6 months, instead of the 3.

now, most insurance companies are paying for chantix- it is worth checking into. I know we had a patient in the hospital last week- his medicare paid for it...
