Anyone Else Using Chantix to Quit Smoking?

Well I went and filled the prescription even though my insurance doesnt cover it....kind of reminds me of years ago when insurance would not cover birth control pill but would cover pregnancy/abortion. Anyway...

I dont know if I should start right away or not. We are going on a cruise in a month and I would love not to smoke on it but wonder if the side effects will affect the vacation enough to wait to start until we come home. Plus I will probably need something for seasickness for a day or two so nausea may be a double problem for me (if I get the nausea.)

I have attempted to quit many, many times in the past and seem to do best (if you can call it "best" as I obviously still smoke) when I am at home, in my own surroundings. I find it easier to cave in when I am out somewhere, on vacation, having a drink, etc.....

What do you all think?

When I got the RX it took me a few days before I would take it. I guess I just wasn't ready yet. The 1st week you can still smoke til your quit day so I figured DH was on vacation after that and he said I was really grouchy. If I had it to start over I would wait til he was safely back at work. :rotfl: But I will be celebrating 5weeks as a non-smoking on Sundayand have saved $400:woohoo: I figure if I totally succeed we will be at WDW next year for 2weeks, not to mention the fact I am not coughing as much and I don't think I will need O2 as much. Good luck to you whenever you decide to start it. We will all be here to lean on. Have a great time on your cruise. :)

My husband goes to see the Doctor about a chantix RX tomorrow. I hope she gives it to him. She often has thoughts of her own on most matters. I will say if she doesn't write a RX for this I am getting a new Dr.

I would wait until after the trip, only because if you associate smoking with being on vacation, it might cause you to slip up. I know it would for me, which is why I'm waiting until after our trip to the races the first weekend of August.

My doc was the same way - she wanted me to try cold turkey first since I had will power to do it on my own before. I did try, but DH smokes, so it's not like I could get rid of it all.

I'm just so happy I had to share.

The last time I posted on this thread was when I was going to get the Chantix (or Champix over in the UK). So I picked it up and started taking it. The first one made me fell like not smoking and I was a little worried about being on four times that in a few days. I picked day 8 for a quit day because I figured that when I took 2x1mg a day for the first time I would probably be ill and not be able to smoke- I did smoke even though I was vomitting. I did not beat myself up about it because I was not smoking 20, but now only 4/5 a day. On day 13, I noticed the daily smokes were creeping back up and set a new quit day- day 15.

I slept not too bad last night (the sleeping side effect is the worse for me). Why? I imagine because today is day 16! That's right folks- I QUIT!!!!! I used to struggle to go a couple of hours without smoking and now I have done a whole day and a bit. Just by not smoking 20 (but 0), I saved myself $11 already- just in one day!!! Today, so far, has been a lot easier. It really is a miracle!

Well done to the other who have quit!
Well done to those who have decided to stop!
Good luck (that you don't really need) to those about to take the Chantix or those about to hit the quit date.

Wow! I don't know what's up with my email notification, but I had no idea this thread was still going.

Again, thank you, Anne, for all the bumps :thumbsup2

Nobodies: I had tears in my eyes reading your post. I remember your post from way back when. It's just incredible that you've done it!!! (BTW, I quit on day 15. Not everyone is ready on day 8. The important thing is you have taken the big step, put the smokes down and are now letting the med do its big work). Major congratulations to you!!!!!

Monique: I hope your DH does as well as so many are doing on this med. It's been shown now to do away with cravings for alcohol, too -- which DH & I both had zero desire for anything alcoholic while on Chantix. I can't imagine any medical doctor not giving this to a patient who requests it.

Disney Kid at Heart: WTG on nearly five weeks!!!! The savings is awesome. DH & I smoked three packs a day between the two of us. We've saved $638 since we quit on 5/22. And that's just on cigs! When you figure in all the illness smoking cost us, I think I can safely double that figure.

WDWBarb: I had the same issue with falling asleep with anything remotely scarey/stressful on the tube. Cartoon Network was a good one or something like CSPAN. A few times, we'd fall asleep to something nice on, say, HBO or Stars, but then hours later, Halloween or Nightmare on Elm Street would be on. EEEK!!!! Congrats to you on your quit! I'm not sure if you're amenable to anything natural, but DH & I have been taking holy basil supplements for the grumpies, as well as anxiety that I experienced coming off Chantix. It has worked wonders for us both. We get this at our local health food store, and they're gelcaps. Holy basil has been used for years by folks from India.

Cool-Beans: Congrats to you, too!

Vellamint: First, welcome to the club! Tough call on when to start. I had a very similar decision to make. Dh, my mother and I were heading to Disney/Universal for a week from 4/28 through 5/6, and we couldn't decide whether to start before or after. We did end up deciding to start after. I'd checked out some of those forums that I posted the links to earlier, and I just saw side effects that, while absolutely tolerable while home, I didn't want to risk while on vacation, i.e., irritability, extreme gas (some of us call it the Chantix Methane Monster), nausea, exhaustion, insomnia. Hindsight being 20/20, I'm glad we waited. The first week or two that you're smoking and on the med, I found, at least, to be the most irritable time. You're smoking, but your brain isn't getting satisfaction from it, so I was just very "off" during that time.

But you decide. By the time we'd all gotten our rx's, we would have literally been starting the med on vacation. You have a month. Geez, depending on when you start it (like in the next day or two), you could be into your second or third week smoke-free and be absolutely adjusted to the med. Be sure to post back and let us know how it's going!

Tinkerdorabelle: That's incredible about your mom. I read this everywhere, smokers for30, 40+ years stopping in their tracks with this med. I'm so happy for you both :)

Todd&Copper: Have you talked with your MIL about this new med? If she has the tiniest inkling at all of wanting to quit -- and wanting to do it almost painlessly -- you should tell her about Chantix.

To everyone else, have a wonderful smoke-free day!!!! 58 days smoke free here, and I still am totally amazed!

Of course! I did a search, and found this great thread, I knew there would be a thread here for Chantix!

My DH and I are starting this together. I'm on day 8 he is a couple days behind me. I haven't picked a quit date, and am afraid to "commit" to one right at the moment, but I will give an update later. (only side effect first week, vivid dreams and lighter than usual sleeping for both of us, which for me is not so good, as I am already a light sleeper).

I noticed a difference taking the first "whole" 1mg instantly today. My stomach felt queasy pretty quickly after taking it, but I felt better a few hours later when I ate lunch.

Can't smoke at work so I'm not sure how I will feel when I get out in the "real world" this evening. (But, sometimes I go outside after lunch and didn't feel like it at all today!).

You are all very inspiring. Congrats to you!! We are determined to be smoke free before our trip to the world in Sept).

I haven't posted here in a few days so I figured I'd catch everyone up.

Today is day 25 on the meds for me---I quit on day 17....Yes I QUIT!!!!

This has been the easiest I have ever had it! I WILL tell every smoker I know about this medication!!

When I last posted it was day 13 and I had had a rough couple of days with the nausea

From that day till today I have yet to have another side effect--No nausea,vomiting,headaches...Nothing!

I was waiting for the med to "kick in",I was waiting for the cigs to smell bad, taste bad etc but it never happened---I quit on Sunday July 15th and the cravings have been virtually non-existent

((So much so that I just realized that I forgot to take my pill today))

I still get cravings but by the time I think to myself ""I don't really want a cigarette"" the craving is gone!!!

This is the pill that has saved my life--THANK YOU PLUTOLUVR!

I decided to go ahead and start right away. I am on day three. No nausea but I do have a continuing headache. If it gets worse tomorrow when the dose gets doubled I will take something for it.

I just dont want to go on that vacation having to find the smoking spots....I am sick of it.

Wish me luck...

Good luck! :thumbsup2 We have a whole "group" up here that are getting their prescriptions filled the day after Labor Day.. Watch the newspapers for:

"Attempt To Quit Smoking Results In The Deaths Of 6 People Fighting Over The LAST Cigarette Left In A Pack".........:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

Well the doctor did rx my husband with Chantix as well as did a complete physical. His blood pressure is high so hopefully that will motivate him.
I tried to fill the rx today and our insurance doesn't cover it but oh well it is money well spent. I am so jealous I quit cold turkey about 3 years ago,I wish they had had this for me when I quit as i had a tough time.

Congrats to all the quitters, thanks for the information and support. Lets keep it up guys..

So glad to see this thread is still kicking! I did get email notification this time :thumbsup2

Guess what? Go ahead. Guess.

Give up?

I've forgotten how many days quit I am! I know I smoked my last cig on Tuesday, 5/22, at around 10 in the morning. Today's, what, the 24th? So I guess I hit the two-month mark a couple days ago, but I've lost track of my days :dance3: :dance3:

Feels nice to go from keeping track of the days to keeping track of the months. It will feel real good to go to YEARS :)

MARY-IN-OH: Congratulations to you & your DH for taking this huge step. You are truly going to be amazed at how well this med works. Seriously! I keep reading stories here and at other support boards, and they all say the same thing. Seriously long-term, heavy smokers, and what are they talking about? Sleep? Nausea? Dreams? Issues with gas (and I don't mean fuel)? Man, I've got to say that when I've tried to quit in the past, sleep and stomach upset were the least of my worries. I just wanted a cig ... needed a cig ... NOW!!!!!! I was biting people's heads off and crying hysterically at times for no reason. Where are the posts like that? Mary, you are going to be so surprised.

Irishbosoxfan: You are sooooo welcome! It's easy to pay it forward and turn other people on to Chantix, isn't it? It works too good. It's the easiest for me, too. I'm still waiting for the bottom to fall out and have my quit become really hard like it has every other time. It just never happened! Major congrats to you. This pill has saved a lot of our lives :grouphug:

C. Ann: I'll keep my eyes open for that. Actually, with as easy it is to quit with Chantix, what I'm thinking we'll be reading about in the news is a new source of global warming or alternative fuel when A LOT of folks go on this med together. Gas is mentioned as a side effect of the med, but I thought it would be like burping. Um, no. I'm a lady through and through, and I've NEVER experienced such heavy gas. Watch out for open flames when the group gets together.

MoniqueU: I'm so happy for your hubby!!!! My mother's BP returned to normal within a week of quitting. She was a three-pack-a-day smoker, had been smoking for almost 30 years. Please keep us updated on your DH's progress :)

I'm so happy so many others are able to quit using this!

I'm glad this thread reappeared. Be forewarned...my DH is having several anxiety issues since he has successfully finished the Chantix. He is not smoking. BUT, please be aware that you may have anxiety/depression issues afterwards. Has anyone else experienced this?

Yes!!! I weaned off (so did my mother) much the way we started the med because I'd read that some were suffering from anxiety and depression once off the med.

One of the other smoking cessation forums I belong to talks about this at length. Many, many folks are going back on Chantix for a couple weeks just to do a wean off and get rid of that nasty anxiety/depression.

Please check out what others are doing to fix it and talk to the doc who prescribed it to let he or she know. The more physicians who know about this happening, the better the chances are that Pfizer will change its recommendations for stopping the med.

About the middle of the page is a wean schedule that has been successful for many folks who've gone off Chantix but had to go back on and do a wean.

HTH :)

Vellamint, hope your headache gets better soon.

I totally hear you on the smoking spots on vacation. It sucks. It will be really different not being ruled by those stupid maps and DSA's won't it? I know on vacation at the World (or Universal, too), I'm constantly wondering where I can sneak one in. Oh, the fam wants to go on Space Mountain, eh? I can't go on that, so I break out the maps and find where I can smoke. And after meals when everyone's ready to go walk and go on rides, I need to figure out how I can get a smoke in. It will be awesome to not have to go through that CRAP anymore, won't it!!!!!!!

Best of luck to you. You can absolutely do it!!

I must admit that DH did go off the Chantix cold turkey. I wondered then if he might have problems. He is starting to come out of the anxiety issues and contiues to be smoke free!! I also agree that since this med is so new that the doctors need to know to tell their patients to wean off. This med is truly a miracle!

Most everyone does go off cold turkey. There's nothing in the literature to say to wean. And it seems as though not everyone has the anxiety/depression after stopping the med cold turkey, but for those that do, it's really a shame because most doctors seem to be at a loss as to how to address it.

I was a sponge looking for info when I first started the med, and most of what people talk about online is the negative stuff. I'd read about this happening, so I just figured I'd wean off just to be safe.

I'm so glad your hubby's starting feeling better and is still smoke-free! I'd read that these Chantix withdrawals can last months for those that are affected by this.

Thank you so much. I now feel like we need to be on a mission to get the word out. Wean off the CHantix!!!!!! DO NOT QUIT THE CHANTIX COLD TURKEY! There, I feel better. :thumbsup2

I am so glad that this thread was on page one today. I first started thinking about going on Chantix when I 1st saw it, but at that time I wasn't ready.

I took my 1st pill this morning! I've smoked over a pack a day since I was 23. I started smoking "socially" when I was 18, but never smoked in front of my parents. (I still don't - at 41!!!)

Like a moron, I didn't read the directions all the way through. First, I didn't eat. BIG mistake. Second - I grabbed the pill from the wrong box!:scared1:

Needless to say, I was so nauseous I hurled the pill up. I called my Dr. to let him know what happened and he told me to just start fresh tomorow.

Now I have a question. We are going out of town with friends Friday through Sunday. Will I be a raging lunatic? Should I delay starting dosage until Sunday? I don't want to scare them, as I do have quite the tempre when I'm grumpy.

Thanks in advance for your help and thanks for this thread!:thumbsup2

Hi, Tink!

My hubby wouldn't smoke in front of his parents, either, and he's 35, been smoking since he was 17. Funny ... he's not afraid to proclaim his quit to his parents now, LOL!

First, congrats to you on making such a wonderful decision :)

Yes, read the directions! Common side effects are nausea, lethargy, insomnia, exhaustion, gas, constipation ... I'm sure there are a few more, but these are the ones off the top of my head. Be sure to take your pills with a meal and a full glass of water. Not a sip ... at least 8 oz or more! If that doesn't help the nausea, talk to your doctor about splitting your pills in half and taking them four times a day instead of a two pills twice a day. Often the nausea subsides once you put the smokes down, and splitting them might not even be necessary.

I don't know about the weekend. I personally had my worst time while I was smoking and on the med in the grouchy department. But maybe if I'd gone out of town with friends and had my mind off it, I'd have done much better?

Really only you can make the decision. Do your friends smoke? Would it be a nice taste of what "nonsmoking" life will be? Or do these friends smoke like chimneys? Are you going to smoking places (Vegas comes to mind, for instance)?

One thing I wouldn't do is not take the med for a few days once you've started it. Either start it tomorrow and continue on with the program uninterrupted or just wait until you get home to start Day 1. I don't think anyone would fault you for waiting a couple days until you get home, settled and begin Chantix next week.

You're going to love it on the other side!!!!

Please keep us posted and have a great trip :)

Oh ... and please think about weaning off the med just as you're weaning yourself on it!

Thank you so much. I now feel like we need to be on a mission to get the word out. Wean off the CHantix!!!!!! DO NOT QUIT THE CHANTIX COLD TURKEY! There, I feel better. :thumbsup2

LOL!!! :thumbsup2

I know I've said it many times that I do not believe this is a one size fits all med, and I'm really surprised Pfizer is dosing it the way it is currently. Yes, it works beautifully. You will quit smoking with it. But a 300-lb 20-year heavy smokers takes the same dose as a 110-lb 5-year light smoker. And their reactions are different!

I'm reading that some doctors aren't even scripting the "pack." They're just writing scripts for Chantix, .5 milligrams, in a bottle and dosing based on the patient's history.

So, yes, wean, wean, wean!!! And make sure you communicate everything to your physicians. They need to know how we're all responding to the med and off the med so it can be tweaked for future smokers wanting to kick this nasty habit.
