Wow! I don't know what's up with my email notification, but I had no idea this thread was still going.
Again, thank you, Anne, for all the bumps
Nobodies: I had tears in my eyes reading your post. I remember your post from way back when. It's just incredible that you've done it!!! (BTW, I quit on day 15. Not everyone is ready on day 8. The important thing is you have taken the big step, put the smokes down and are now letting the med do its big work). Major congratulations to you!!!!!
Monique: I hope your DH does as well as so many are doing on this med. It's been shown now to do away with cravings for alcohol, too -- which DH & I both had zero desire for anything alcoholic while on Chantix. I can't imagine any medical doctor not giving this to a patient who requests it.
Disney Kid at Heart: WTG on nearly five weeks!!!! The savings is awesome. DH & I smoked three packs a day between the two of us. We've saved $638 since we quit on 5/22. And that's just on cigs! When you figure in all the illness smoking cost us, I think I can safely double that figure.
WDWBarb: I had the same issue with falling asleep with anything remotely scarey/stressful on the tube. Cartoon Network was a good one or something like CSPAN. A few times, we'd fall asleep to something nice on, say, HBO or Stars, but then hours later, Halloween or Nightmare on Elm Street would be on. EEEK!!!! Congrats to you on your quit! I'm not sure if you're amenable to anything natural, but DH & I have been taking holy basil supplements for the grumpies, as well as anxiety that I experienced coming off Chantix. It has worked wonders for us both. We get this at our local health food store, and they're gelcaps. Holy basil has been used for years by folks from India.
Cool-Beans: Congrats to you, too!
Vellamint: First, welcome to the club! Tough call on when to start. I had a very similar decision to make. Dh, my mother and I were heading to Disney/Universal for a week from 4/28 through 5/6, and we couldn't decide whether to start before or after. We did end up deciding to start after. I'd checked out some of those forums that I posted the links to earlier, and I just saw side effects that, while absolutely tolerable while home, I didn't want to risk while on vacation, i.e., irritability, extreme gas (some of us call it the Chantix Methane Monster), nausea, exhaustion, insomnia. Hindsight being 20/20, I'm glad we waited. The first week or two that you're smoking and on the med, I found, at least, to be the most irritable time. You're smoking, but your brain isn't getting satisfaction from it, so I was just very "off" during that time.
But you decide. By the time we'd all gotten our rx's, we would have literally been starting the med on vacation. You have a month. Geez, depending on when you start it (like in the next day or two), you could be into your second or third week smoke-free and be absolutely adjusted to the med. Be sure to post back and let us know how it's going!
Tinkerdorabelle: That's incredible about your mom. I read this everywhere, smokers for30, 40+ years stopping in their tracks with this med. I'm so happy for you both
Todd&Copper: Have you talked with your MIL about this new med? If she has the tiniest inkling at all of wanting to quit -- and wanting to do it almost painlessly -- you should tell her about Chantix.
To everyone else, have a wonderful smoke-free day!!!! 58 days smoke free here, and I still am totally amazed!
