I was wondering if anyone else over 50 was planning on competing in the 2011 Senior Olympics? For those that don't know what this is, it's a national competition sanctioned by the Olympic committee, where athletes over 50 can compete in an Olympic competition against other athletes in their own age groups.

It's held every two years, each time in a different state. The trials are held at State level and you have to medal, first second or third to get a slot. This year they are allowing the top 4 from each age group in each sport to give more people a chance to compete.

I represented Kentucky in 2007 and that year it was held in Louisville Ky. Their were 12,000 total athletes competing from age 50 to the oldest was 102 years old. You compete only against others in your age group and they keep track of State, National and World age group records.

If your over 50 and would like the experience of competing in the Olympics you should look into it. The competition is intense and it's an adventure you will always remember. It's major cool marching into the stadium with your state team, carrying your state flag. Our Governor lead the Ky team in. Then we had a wonderful opening ceremony with Bruce Jenner and Peppy Flemming lighting the Olympic flame.

Anyone who is interested in training for their state games and then the 2011 Senior Olympics in Houston, please post what you are doing on here. There are competitions in swimming, biking, running (5 and 10K) race walking, all the track and field sports, tennis and many other sports.

There's a guy from my neck of the woods that could probably represent Arkansas in the race walking category. He's really good. I'll have to mention this to him. I kind of get the feeling, though, that he only enters races he knows he can win. I may be wrong, though. He likes to collect trophies and other prizes. Maybe he'll consider the challenge.
