First let me say, I completely understand that this is serious.... and in no way am trying to minimize this... and I agree that we need to use all pre-cautions, and stay home if we are sick, and take care of the elderly and people with compromise immune systems... which is something that I would hope that people are doing daily... like washing their hands, constantly... with or without the flu, we will need to change how we go about our daily lives... So Respectfully...

People need to go back to work.... so that they can take care of their families, and kids... put food on the table, pay the light bill, the mortgage, the car and insurance, and cover the basic's... I know most people are getting to the point that they would rather take their chances than loose everything that they have worked for... and the ability to provide

The government and courts systems need to be in active, they are in place to protect us as well... My neighbors cousin, future ex-husband, just kicked in her door, 6 hours after they let him out of jail for Domestic Violence, they only could arrest him for kicking in the door, and being drunk and resisting arrest... the order for protection is sitting on a Judges desk waiting for him to sign it, since mid Feb... until them the order is not valid... so more than likely he will be out in 48 to 72 hours... the poor police officers really can't do anything for her, until the order for protection is sign off on, once its signed off if he violates it then they can keep him in jail... so she is a nurse so she is needed, so she is going to have to go into hiding... couch serf with friends or stay at the hospital... so who is protecting her?... while she is taking care of sick people?

My friends sister in law has a hair salon... and she is either going to go against the order and open back up... or she will loose everything... she has made plans to open back up, On May 1st... whether the order is lifted or not.... she spent money to have a salon deep cleaned, and her DH put up partitions and they will be working 14 feet apart, staggered appointments, and is changing her hours, 6:30 am to 9:00 pm and only allowing 2 stylist to work at a time, no one waiting in the sitting area, by appointment only... mask and gloves for the stylist and for the clients... She has 6 employees... 3 of them are single mothers...the stimulus and unemployment will not make it in time to help them... they must work, need to work to provide for their kids... She worried that people would not want to come back... they are completely booked for the first 2 weeks in May... even though she really did not have it, they gave 100 dollar gift card to wal-mart to their employee's to help them out...

Our good friend is more than like going to loose her cute little boutique that she built from nothing... 14 years of work gone... poof... Everything that she purchased for Spring, Mother's Day, and early Summer is sitting in the back room of her boutique, and she is hoping that she will be able to just get what she paid for it...all of it is paid for, and she can not return it... in the next 3 or 4 weeks she has to pay for late summer and early fall, and some seasonal and holiday items... and if she cancels the order she will not have any enough merchandise going moving into the the second half of the year... plus she worry's if people will have any money to spend...

While we see heartwarming stories on the news, of landlords giving their tenants a break...while that's nice... most folks are not so understanding... why don't they put those stories on the evening news... my DD got a notice from the apartment complex that they live in that, that they just moved into last month... that there will not be any allowance for late rent... Thankfully my SIL works in essential services, so he is working, my DD is not working and she and my grandson are at home, and they have some savings... and of course we will help them if they need it... they are standing on their own... and still paying their all their basic need... except... for The preschool is closed where our Grandson goes, is demanding payment, and sent out threatening letters, to either pay or their place will be dropped... which of course they can't pay without her working... but if school returns to class he will need to finish pre K, he is doing the on-line thing... so I told her that we would work it out..he goes to kindergarten in the fall... and will need just after school care at a different day care... and yet she understands that the daycare is just trying to make ends meet... So while no one is at fault... what do you do?

My whole thing is... For goodness sake... we are Americans... we don't run and hide... and cower in the corner wringing our hands together... We fight... we are a nation of people willing to fight to protect each other.... we pull together, dig in, stand together and prove that we can do anything... how can we let the the this flu beat us all down... take everything we work for, the ability to provide for our families away... the right to go to church...spend time with our loved ones... and just stand there and watch it all disappear...
We can still work and provide for our families... while it may look different...we are so good at getting the problems solved...
We are All American... we fought the British, with a rag tag army for our freedom, Women went to work during the World Wars, we pulled together.... we fought back against those who came for us on 911, hunted them down and dealt with them... We make it happen...
We don't negotiate with terrorist... why are we negotiating with a virus?.... and letting a virus send us scurrying and into hiding... when we can still look for a vaccine, and other therapy's and help each other without destroying our economy... in order to fight we need a strong economy...

So when do we draw the line and say enough is enough...?

Please don't make this political... there is enough of that on TV daily... please no flames either... Just my own personal opinion...

Sending pixie dust and love to everyone... pixiedust: :goodvibes:flower1::love:

You say you don't want it to be political, yet go out of your way to delineate how this affects Americans? This is a global crisis affecting all of humanity.

A stiff upper lip and suck it up Buttercup will only carry you so far against a microscopic enemy. Better to be prudent and use common sense, following the bits of information we do have about what we're fighting and use that to decide how we can get most people through this thing healthy on the other side of this monstrosity. Cutting and running on social distancing at this point only prolongs the misery.

I would think that too to some extent, but as someone with high blood pressure (controlled on meds but still) & seeing that is now that number one comorbidity (at least here), I don’t know how I return to normal life until there is a vaccine, treatment, or more research/data about the comorbidities. No one wants to be at risk, but I have a 2 yr old so I am very worried about getting it & ending up hospitalized or worse. I don’t care if other ppl go back to work. But, I don’t want to have to til my risk is reduced.

IMHO everybody who feels like they'd rather "take their chances" should read some of these stories about what it's like to be on a ventilator. Or worse, be in a country where the health care system is so overwhelmed that there is no ICU bed or ventilator for you. Because that's the chance you (yes, you, regardless of age or health status) are taking.

I get where you’re coming from, I don’t know what part of the US you’re in, but maybe you’re not seeing it for what it is. I live in NYC and they have refrigerator trucks on the street to store bodies because morgues are full. People are dying in hospitals without their family members by their side because our hospitals are overwhelmed. All I’m saying is no one is alone in this, we’re all in the same boat. The longer we don’t comply the longer we will have to suffer. Most banks and credit cards are waving late fees and interest charges if you just call and ask! This will pass, but we have to lay low on order for it to simmer down.

I do understand. I have friends and family losing their jobs. I do not know how you expect me and my husband to fight. He is at risk. Our parents are at risk. Heck with asthma my kids in their twenties are at risk. I don't have the tools to fight. I will not be going back out there until a vaccine is available, it dies out, etc. That is fine if others want to at some point, but until it is pretty much gone, I'm not. There are A LOT of us like that. Enough, that I doubt the economy will come back until we can feel safe. It isn't only me. It is my mother-in-law and mom. I will not put their health in jeopardy. Also, as Louisiana is showing us diabetes and hypertension are HUGE risk factors and a HUGE problem in a large portion of our society.

First, I think you delude yourself if you think the economy can be strong until we've beaten this. Numerous financial experts, CEOs, hedge fund managers, economists have warned about the economic danger of reopening too soon.

As for this part,

We don't negotiate with terrorist... why are we negotiating with a virus?.... and letting a virus send us scurrying and into hiding... when we can still look for a vaccine, and other therapy's and help each other without destroying our economy... in order to fight we need a strong economy...

Jason Kander wrote something on Twitter on March 15th that resonated with me, I'm copying & pasting his thread here.

This somewhat prevalent “social distancing = weakness” take on #COVID19 reminds me of a story. For three weeks in October 2002, a sniper terrorized the greater D.C. metro, murdering civilians who were guilty of nothing other than going about their lives:
Carrying groceries to their car, sitting on a park bench, or mowing their yard. These victims were chosen at random. At the time, I was a Georgetown student and an Army ROTC Cadet.
Local officials – as well as University leaders – were unified in their message to the public: “If we stop going out and spending money, the terrorists win.” It was simply uncool to admit you didn’t want to go out for lunch, walk across an open campus, or drive to work.
Then, at the conclusion of a morning ROTC training session, one of my instructors offered a “safety brief.” He was a tall, grizzled Sargent First Class with a combat patch, which was rare in those early days post-911.
“I know all these civilians keep saying to go about your daily lives so the terrorists don’t win, but that’s [flipping] stupid,” he growled. “There’s a damn sniper out there shooting people!”
“I’ve been shot at by snipers, and I’m standing here because I didn’t walk around like some kind of idiot pretending there was no sniper.”
“The terrorists aren’t winning because you stay home, Cadets,” he continued.
“The terrorists are winning because snipers are always winning until you find them and kill them. Until the good guys find these guys and take them out, be smart, and don’t go outside.” I followed his orders, and I’ve thought about that short “safety brief” often since.
And I’ve been thinking about it a lot these past few weeks as I’ve watched the President and several others in the highest levels of leadership lack the courage to tell Americans the truth about this situation, as well as the way many fellow citizens are refusing to stay home.
The American personality tends toward defiance, and in times of crisis or massive disruption, we exhibit an instinctual cultural response along the lines of, “I’m not going to let this event change the way I do things.” Political “leadership” too often defers to this instinct.
Leaders fear being seen as “overreacting” while citizens fear being seen by their peers as fearful. In the case of a global pandemic, we should reject this reluctance and give in to the temptation toward urgency. Urgency is what we need.
For fear of hurting the economy, most local, state and federal officials will seek to be as minimally disruptive as possible for as long as possible. In my view, that is a mistake.
As one expert recently put it, this pandemic has the possibility of hitting 1918 levels, meaning that while not everyone will die, everyone will know someone who does. Everything we do right now should be about avoiding such a scenario.
Perhaps this crisis will turn out to be overblown and I’ll look alarmist for having authored this thread. I sincerely hope that to be the case. Ideally, after a slow start, we will now respond so swiftly that we’ll never know the degree to which the response prevented disaster.
I regard a massive preventative response to coronavirus the way I regarded the backup weapon I carried while I was an Army intelligence officer in Afghanistan: I would rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it.
Let’s support public officials who prioritize public health above all else.
And - in the absence of real leadership at the top - let’s make it cool to stay home. Remember, when there’s a sniper out there, you can’t defeat the sniper by pretending they don’t exist.

Also, courts are working on emergent matters. Someone released from jail on a DV charge who promptly heads for their victim and kicks in a door qualifies. Another emergency petition can be filed based on the ongoing conduct and will likely be heard, and stands a good chance of being granted.
