Anyone else sick of the snow....

Well they tried to send the kids back to school today so we marched the mile along this morning in -16 weather (I had them in heavy trousers though and stuck their paper thin uniform ones in their bags to change into at school!). Then I got a text at lunchtime to say that the school had closed and they were being bused to a local high school and to come collect them! Turned out there was a suspected gas leak & they had to evacuate asap - I was REALLY glad I'd stuck them in proper clothes as they had to stand in the parking lot waiting on the buses!

I'm hoping if they go back tomorrow that it will be third time lucky - pretty much 8 days off (6 full days & 2 early closings) so far!

Well at least your COuncil is making the effort. It really isn't that bad here at the moment but they just made a blanket decision to keep schools closed again Our head teacher rarely closes as it is a catchment school and the majority of the kids are in walking distance. She usually is able to use her discretion to open. I had some descriptive words when I heard they decided to keep schools closed again tomorrow just in case. This is my last bit of leave I saved up especially to do my shopping and wrapping for Santa. Now I have had DD with me every day and they want to stay closed tomorrow. Sheer laziness on their party (the Council). This has nothing to do with safety at all. We have had no snow since Monday's dumping and had blue skies and sunshine, even though very cold, since then. I have nothing nice to say about our Council at all at the moment, but I would like to stay on the DIS so please don't ask me what I think of them

I actually managed to go and finish my xmas shopping today and apart from 1 small flurry of snow this afternoon we haven't had any major snowfall since Monday. Are things finally looking up???

I actually managed to go and finish my xmas shopping today and apart from 1 small flurry of snow this afternoon we haven't had any major snowfall since Monday. Are things finally looking up???

Well, I guess it could be worse. I should be looking at it as quality time with DD but I work and when I leave work, I go straight to get her from after school care/granny or wherever so she is ALWAYS with me, i.e. no chance for Christmas shopping. My big grumble this week is that our schools don't need to be closed at this stage and this is the ONLY time I have to do my shopping. You can't do everything online. This is my last leave for the year so I can't take any more time to do it and don't have childcare to ask someone to keep her so I can just work the rest of the week and take the last two days next week.

Of course I feel much better now as DD is lying in bed watching Snowed In At The House of Mouse and said, "I know why you like Donald Duck. You don't have the Christmas Spririt this year!" Great!

Yeah, despite how I may sound when I'm posting, my frustration is more at the elements rather than the Council. I actually think West Lothian are (for the most part) doing a really good job, particularly compared to last winter! Last winter, for 10 days they were adament they wouldn't touch the estates, and then everything froze over so badly that they had to dig us out. By that point, the ice was several inches thick and it was a horrendous job. I remember standing in my drive whacking it with a spade and not making any kind of dent. :lol: Even in our cul-de-sac where we were digging ourselves out every day we couldn't keep up, so having been dug out within 5 days this time I'm pretty happy.

I just wish the trains would start running again so DH can get back to work!

Actually, West Lothian does fairly well on the 'popularity' polls. I see our road, on an insanely steep hill with a nasty sharp corner around the top, did not have the pavements treated last year. In fact they don't seem to be doing anything to any of the pavements for the last year or so .... until someone slipped and hit their head on the curb All of a sudden they are driving along the sidewalks now. Also, no more grit bins at the end of the roads so residents can't even do it themselves.

My frustration is not really at the elements at the moment. We have no reason not to be up and running but it costs them a bit of money to sort things for an extra day. I truly believe the decision in our case is 100% financial and they are riding on the excuse of the elements. I walked DD to school one icy -18 degree January morning this year. It was her old school, a good 15 - 20 minute brisk walk from home. Five minutes up the road I notice that our black coats were white with frost DD looked at me and I saw that we had thick frost on our eyebrows and lashes. A minute later she stopped in her tracks. I asked her what was wrong and she wailed: "My snot is frozen!" The point I am making is that the snow was tipping into the top of my knee high boots .... but schools were open.

I understand that. I don't blame the staff or the school in any way. It is beyond their control. The problem is too much red tape - and a lot of the time it is used as a scapegoat. Never mind, I shall perk myself up tomorrow with a trip out of the county West Lothian: Here we come!

I never thought of that as being the reason.....I was only saying to DD the other day that we, as nurses, were always told to report to the nearest hospital - I'm not sure that even that would be the case now then

No excuse for me though as I work at our nearest, walkable to, hospital

That's a shame - Edinburgh council have been asking staff to report to their nearest school if they can't get to the one they work at and nursery teachers here have been reporting to the local primary schools (nurseries are shut until Monday). My daughter was THRILLED to have a couple of her old nursery teachers in her classroom yesterday.

I'm another West Lothian resident and can only commend them for all their hard work for what has now been a month of snow

They've made valiant attempts to keep schools open when possible and are trying really hard to clear roads and paths. They are battling against the elements tho' .The average daytime temp this week here has been -6. and has been as low as -18 overnight

I'll be delighted when it finally melts . We've had more than enough of it now.

I am sick of the snow and bad weather. We were supposed to be at Disneyland Paris for the past 3 days but didn't make it and it doesn't look like we will be getting our money back (so that is £800 down the drain!) My family are supposed to be coming for Christmas (some are 3 hours north of us and some are 3 hours south), we have all the food in but are unsure who will make it to visit us.
