Anyone else scared to fly right now

Not at all. The goal of terrorism is fear. The attacks take lives but it is the feeling of insecurity and always looking over your shoulder that is the real goal of terrorism.

Made it thru security this morning with no problem. Have been in two airports so far and haven't noticed any heightened anxiety. FWIW...I'm not worried any more than whenever I entrust my life to Delta:goodvibes

Enjoy your visit and the flights.

Sayhello

You're much more likely to die in your car on your way to the airport. The only thing you should worry about is even longer lines at the airport.

I"m a very nervous flier in general and have always been scared, I am not more afraid now than I was before. Flying has always scared me and I have motion sensitivity issues as well so I panic (inside) all the time and listen to every little sound a plane makes.

We are leaving on Thursday and I am a nervous flier to begin with too. I will try not to be more nervous than normal but I am sure it will cross my mind. I take note of every little noise too! Also occasionally grabbing my b/f's arm, glad I am not the only one! hah!

"I'm at WDW!" Yeah, even at the airport I still feel like I am officially at WDW because those are the first signs you see with Mickey for the Magical Express.

I TOTALLY agree with you on this one too! Everyone at work keeps asking if I am ready or excited for my trip and I have a hard time explaining that it just doesn't seem real or like it is time for vacation until I get there, to the Orlando airport. Then it is magical. :wizard:

I had very mixed emotions when I heard the news last night. Many thoughts, prayers, and positive wishes to the troops and all of the work they do. It is impossible to thank them enough for their work.

You're an American. Chest out, shoulders back, chin in and stare your fears in the face. Enough with the fear already (not judging the OP, just saying in general.)

Or to put it as our cousins did in their darkest moments:

I could be wrong but I don't know if they'd be able to get something together in the next 10 days. Don't forget, security will be extra tight right now in anticipation of a retaliation.

What I'm worried about.... I was planning a week-long trip to NYC in late June or mid-July. I'm not too sure if I want to be in the city for the next few months now....

I live in brooklyn, and work in manhattan....I was stuck in the city during 9/11and got on a plane to chicago 5 days later. I still take the train into the city everyday and believe me, the homeless people lurking around you are sometimes more scary than the thought of another attack. Please don't let something like this prevent you from coming to the greatest city on earth. If it makes you feel any better, every huge city in the USA gets dozens of threats EVERYDAY, we just never hear about them. If anything I'd rather be in a city that is equipped to deal with something and has the manpower to prevent something from happening than not.

Also terrorists rarely hit the same place twice. If there were to be another hit, its prob not going to be NYC.

Flying, not so much. Maybe a little.

Oddly enough, security scares me - but not just at the airport. Being any place where gunmen can be promised to find a whole bunch of people crammed into one small space makes me a little uneasy. Talk about sitting ducks.

But there isn't any way to know what is coming or when, so I don't see the purpose of worrying...can't really do any good, so why bother?

Some days I think I should go live in China. Their standard of living keeps going up and those lunatic arabs are not allowed to attack them. Bad food and crazy drivers, though.

Aw, yay! I have this on a bookmark and would happily post it everywhere I go. Such a great statement about how to conduct yourself under so many circumstances. :)

I moved to DC less than three months before 9/11/2001. I was in, of all things, a contingency planning meeting that morning (for an expected disruption to campus operations). The TV in the room was tuned to the Today show, and we watched it all play out live. And then we scattered to our various offices, trying to simultaneously keep tabs on what was happening and reach everyone we needed to reach, professionally and personally.

I think my mom would have loved to have seen me come back to New England at that point, but...I'm now married to the guy for whom I moved, and we have two awesome daughters and take great Disney vacations. :) I was absolutely depressed in the weeks following the event, but it wasn't geographically determined. That day was surreal - our friends gathered. We ate. We walked around the city. We hung together in front of the television, and we hung onto each other as we figured out our personal connections to the lives lost that day. Those friends are still among the best I've ever had, have now, and will ever have.

I've tangented big time, but I guess what I'm trying to say is that I'll never forget how I felt that day or what it felt like to walk from the metro to work past humvees and armed military personnel. And I had itty bitty jitters the first time I got on a plane that fall. But I've kept on looking ahead, because looking back is how you trip and fall on your face.

XO

I wouldn't be scared to travel to NYC in June or July because of terrisom the federal gov dosnet wan anything happening again in ny so they will be on top of everything. My mother works for the federal gov in NYC an takes the train in everyday and rides the subway or walk or if it nice she walks to work she wouldn't do it if she didn't feel safe. Don't be affraid to travel just be more aware of your surroundings and report anything you think is suspicious to the police.

Thanks for that! My family leaves for NYC in about a month and we cannot wait!!!!!! We are also leaving 9/10 for WDW and I bet it will be pretty safe with the heightened security then too!

I asked my mom and she said they haven't stepped up security at work still have to go through X-ray but they are going on with business as usually for now. I don't think they want to scary anyone yet by putting more federal police on patrol. Plus they have cameras on the top of the building that can see pretty much all of at least all of manhattan. Just because you don't see extra police or together security at public places doe not mean they are not in place. Have fun enjoy your trip visit the Disney story in time square.

Focus on the fun, otherwise they have won.

:) Keep calm and ROCK on!

Have a nice trip, I would LOVE a Disney Break right now.

No. I don't have any specific plans to fly in the next few weeks, but I would be mentally fine if I did.

There's a quote from Shakespeare's Caesar that I love, which is applicable to many modern situations.

Caeasar's wife has a dream predicting that Caesar is going to be killed on the morning he is actually stabbed. She begs him not to go to the forum. Though Caesar IS a bit pompous and overconfident, he has a great line:

"Cowards die many times before their deaths,
The valiant never taste of death but once."

I have thought on that line many times. It says many things all at once.

The play should be required reading. If you've never read it, you should.

I wouldn't be scared to fly now, nor am I scared to fly when we go to Boston in July. My parents were en route to Bermuda on 9-11 out of Boston. I have never in my life known such fear as the fear I had that morning praying to God that it wasn't their plane. I let them scare me that day, but that's all they get.

I flew home not long after 9/11 and I was scared at first. I saw armed military patrolling the airport and it was surreal. it was like I was in a different country. But then I remembered... I'm in the greatest country in the world. and if I DON'T fly home, they will win. So I walked up to the nearest soldier and thanked him for protecting our country so that we can fly home to our families. And I took some comfort that they were there.

Don't give in to fear.....it's a breeding ground for terrorists. Hope, love, belief and determination....that is America. Go on your trip with all the excitement in the world. :grouphug:

My husband had to fly out on business today. He was a little nervous, but its not worth changing your plans. I'm more scared of prices of plane tickets and gas right now, anyway. Go and enjoy your vacation!

I don't have any plans to fly right now, but if I did, my answer would be no.

I flew out today for a business conference in Orlando (such a rough life .. I know). I didn't think twice about stepping on the plane this morn. Just glad it was on time :)

I think it would be the opposite. Right after something happens, be it this or a crash, everyone is on alert.

It is months from now when everyone relaxes that one has to worry if one is going to worry at all.

I agree the price of gas this morning was the scariest thing I saw and they say the price of oil went down. Hear is hoping that we see that at the pump very soon.
