since I live where it gets really cold and snows, I have been planting an indoor garden for several winters now and have had success on vegetables that we eat regularly. I plant Lettus, spinich, tomatoes, cucumbers, green onions and basil. Saves money for us because cost of basic everyday vegetables goes up tremendously in winter here. Anyone else have an indoor garden? we can share tips

I'm going to try it this year for the first time... Wish me luck. I've murdered more defenseless houseplants than I care to admit. I don't really have room for anything big, so I'm just planning on herbs, green onions, lettuce, and spinach on the shelves I use for seed starting.

let me know how it goes. I wish you success.:goodvibes
Also, one tip that I've learned and it works, buy green onions from the store, use green tops for food and plant the white part with roots,
they continue to make the green part, which I cut and use all winter.

I'm actually an excellent, experienced gardener. My friends joke about my backyard farm. But when it comes to indoor plants I'm hopeless. :confused3

My DH after several winters, built me an indoor Terrarium/small green house, which I plant my more delicate plants, like tomatoes, cucumbers or anything that is effected by colder air, plus we bought grow lights at Lowes. I plant everything else on a plant shelf in front of a South facing window and they grow well there.

Today I'm harvesting Purple Pole bean seeds for next year outdoor garden.
Bring in some harvest that may get damaged because we will be getting a dusting of snow tommorrow. Not ready for winter.:(

I think I'm ready to attempt something more than just a few herbs. I've currently got two trays of greens growing.... one will be ready to harvest in another few days and the other is just getting started. I plan to rotate them this way thoughout the winter. That being said, up until this point they have been able to stay outdoors!

I would never attempt something like tomatoes or peppers inside.... they just need too much sun and too much heat. We keep our house pretty cool in the winter and the only south facing window in my ENTIRE house is in DS's room... plus it is partially blocked from the sun in the afternoon by the garage roof. And our electric bills are already sky-high, so grow lights are out of the question (although we use them a bit in the spring sometimes to get seeds started).

I tried celery indoors recently from the cut bottom of the celery bunch, but it started to grow nicely and then rotted... so maybe I overwatered? I might try again.

Love to hear how others do with off-season gardening! ..............P

I'm also looking into buying a mushroom growing kit, I eat enough of them. Anyone ever tried growing mushrooms?

I've read that people have used old aquariums as indoor greenhouses. I usually buy my seeds from rareseeds.com they specialize in heirlooms (seeds can be save to next growing season). But do a search online and there are plenty of seed suppliers and right now everything is cheap, end of the season. I've even purchased off of Etsy. During the growing season, I usually plan ahead and buy extra seed for later. Last night was my offical end to growing season, we did get a bit of snow.
