Anyone else noticing a change in the way teens are dressing lately?

or is it just my daughter? :confused3 Not that she ever dressed weird or anything, but I'm seeing a shift toward more conservative clothing. She's always liked the tight, fitted t-shirts and tight jeans, but I've noticed that I know longer have to scrutinize everything she wears. I mean, there were times in the past, especially in middle school, where I sent her straight back upstairs to change into something more appropriate for school. Maybe I felt her skirt was too short, or the shoes had too big of a heel, that kind of thing.

Well, now it's almost creepy. Her closet is full of collared polo shirts. She still has tank tops, but she wears them tastefully showing underneath the polos. She still likes the tight jeans, but she wears them with flip-flops and cute belts, (the cloth kind with designs on them-flowers, dots, shells, etc.). And the purse she bought matches the belts. She likes the small, canvas tote bags.

The other day she asked me where I bought my boat-mocs. I was waiting for her to tell me that I shouldn't wear such shoes, but guess what? She wanted a pair for herself! Last weekend we went shopping and she bought a cute pair of blue and white boat-mocs.

Now, I'm not complaining or anything. I LIKE the clothes she's wearing! Is this happening in other parts of the country? I can only hope it stays around for awhile! :teeth:

edited to add- she still wears short shorts, but she's added, gasp, knee-length, bermuda shorts to her collection!

Funny you should mention this because I was thinking the same thing the other day when I took my DS shopping at Old Navy. The skirts were actually knee length and she actually bought one! She, too, loves polo shirts and wears them often. I hope this trend lasts--I like it! :thumbsup2

No, I've not seen any noticeable changes. Here in the DC area, there's still a lot of cami/skimpy tank tops with short skirts, shorts/pajamas pants with Angel, Cheerlead, what have you written on the butt, or hip-hugging pants and all matter of exposed skin. :rotfl:

Alabama style tends to run a little behind most states. My 15 year old still likes tight fitting t's, tight-ish pants, she also loves cute belts, flip flops, and cute bags. I will be glad when knee lengh skirts and polo shirts become popular around here. Crossing my fingers, hoping it will be soon.

:teeth: It's 80's prep - comin' back!

I personally dont care much for it - although it's my daughter wearing it, I'd be all about it... especially as opposed to the "Prostitot" looks of last year! :teeth:

My niece will be happy if these styles are appearing in more stores. She has never liked the short/tight/"show off what you haven't got" styles of the past couple of years. She's 12 now and was dreading moving back to the U.S. because that's all she was seeing and she didn't think she'd ever find clothes that she liked. My sister couldn't order her anything online and she hated it when her aunts would send her clothes. Maybe now she'll have more options.

ugh! I work at a HS & the girls will get away with whatever they can! The only nice side effect of all our rain is that it has postponed the belly-showing season! Around here we've always had some girls who dress more conservatively and some who push it.

I've noticed a change in my son's clothes lately. He just turned 16 and he seems to be going the way of the more preppy look.

He used to wear the baggy jeans, skater shoes, band t-shirts, etc. I just took him out the other day for some clothes and he bought a couple pairs of plaid bermuda shorts, some collared polos, he has a couple of pairs of the Sperry topsiders.

It's a welcomed change, he looks much more neat and put together. He's attending an all boy's HS and some of these kids come from VERY wealthy families, so I'm not sure if that's dictating the change. Maybe this is what the other boys are wearing.

I think the pendulum is just swinging back the other way.

I certainly hope so and may the Versace woman designer who jumpstarted the designer prostitute look have an avalanche of camis and tank tops fall on her head. :teeth:

Polo shirts are really in here!

DD attends private school with a type of dress code which calls for collared shirts so all these polos make it so easy to shop. So far, we don't have any issues with the clothing (but she is only 12).

Yes, my clothes are back in style again!!!!

They sure are!! DD17 went out of here the other day with jeans, a polo with a popped collar, and boat shoes - pink and white!!! Oh, with a pink and green belt with whales on it!!! She's always had a little prep going on, even when some others were into a skankier look. I'm delighted, because DD12 will (I hope) want to wear that style, too, instead of the Limited Too look I find so unappealing. We've just been through the peasant look, so I'll cheerfully welcome the 80s back!!! Long live pink and green!!

Please, no. At least not yet...I don't own a can of starch!

DD12 and I are LOVING the new styles sneaking in. Especially the LONG tanks to wear under t's and polos...we like that look because no skin shows! Loving the longer shorts and the cute fabric belts/bags. Haven't seen the deck shoes yet, but will DEFINITELY keep my eye out! Showed DD some Bass bucks the other day and she was not impressed.

Sorry, that's been "in" for a while. Though it doesn't seem to hit me as "bad" as it did in the 80s when it was going on. Not everyone is doing it, but a lot of guys in particular, have been doing for a couple years. I am hoping the colars won't be quite as huge and wild looking so the popping won't seem so out of place.

I've noticed though, over the last couple of years, the clothing is getting to be more "clean" and "classic" in the lines. Belly baring shirts have been making their way out for a while. A lot of hip length shirts have been in lately.

As a 29 year old who looks young and dresses casual, I am very happy with the way the trends have been turning.

Popping the collar (like most fashion trends) is cute on the right person.

If tight rolling your jeans comes back, I am going to cry.

Back two years ago when bellies hanging out, and the "square butt in jeans" look was at its height; this swing in fashion was predicted. I read an obscure little article predicting a return to modesty. Then I told several fashion slaves that by the spring of 2006 they would be wearing skirts that covered the knee and preppy clothes. "No Way!" was of course the reply. :rolleyes2 :lmao:

Sure it's a welcome change. But I fear only an outward change instead of inward. Wish it was because everyone was getting smart and mature.
