Anyone else not love the cruise?

Thank you for everyone's comments. I felt that the cruise was going to be perfect and I am glad that I will expect some let downs too. We are not cruising until December so if dcl gets enough complaints maybe some things will change. Thank you to everyone who was honest on the comment cards. My daughter will be 2.5 does anyone have complaints on flounders. I don't want to put her in flounders if there are any complaints from anyone. My son will be 6.5 and he is probably old enough to make his own decission on the kids club so I am not to worried about that, but did anyone feel it was not safe. I don't know if my son will realize certain things that aren't safe like to many kids to cm's etc.

Fair, enough. I absolutely agree.

Originally posted by mrsfuzzmo These are "Cruise Boards". Open to anyone who has an opinion and wants to share it. Like I said, I like to share my opinions, my insights, and my experiences on the cruise like anyone else. Is there some fine print that says "If you didn't like the cruise, you may not say it on these boards?" If there is, I must have missed it. [/B]

Remember, I was not being argumentative, really just curious. I AM happy to hear all sides. I wasn't as thrilled with my last cruise either as I was for the previous two. I think some of it was the poor stateroom service & the condition of our room & some of the ship, but in hindsight I know that a good part of it was my attitude at the time. I did rebook, however & am looking forward to a much better time again.

Although I think most will understand why I asked my original question, I will explain that I don't visit the RCL - or any other - board just because we don't cruise on them. But, like you said, it IS good to get opinions from those who didn't have a 'magical' experience.

Thanks again.

I also post regularly on the Carnival board, Norwegian Board and RCCL board but haven't been on a cruise with them for a few years. I posted a negative review about a Carnival ship and the "Carnival faithful" went off on me to the point that they started threatning my life via email. After 6 months of dealing with the isp's, the authorities, and the board it got resolved. I have been wary to post anything negative about a cruise since then and now after posting about this cruise and getting some of the comments I can understand why I'm questioning why I wrote anything negative. Perhaps Nats mom is right and we got put on some ghost ship that none of you "disney cruise faithful" ever have been on...still doesn't change the fact that we felt our cruise wasn't up to the standard we expected of the Disney Cruise Line. Whether our opinions are right or wrong as we see them they are true and correct. Some people bash Carnival on here but we've had nothing but excellent times with them. Does that make them wrong or "on a ghost ship" just because their opinion doesn't match mine?? Geez I would sure hope not!

Our family of 6 did a 4 night about 18ms ago...while I'd give it a 7 out of 10... for the price I'd much rather pick the parks....I felt like a soccor mom trying to keep track of kids and picking them up and dropping them off at the kids clubs...Not enough relaxing time for me...

A quick question about the food...

We have eaten at three of the Rainforest cafes when visiting Disneyland and Walt Disney World...while we LOVE the atmosphere of the RFC, the food is always very bland and tastes like it is made with cheap ingredients. I've never figured out why the restaurant itself is so cool and yet they don't serve better quality food. It is disappointing because we go for the atmosphere and kind of have to "put up" with the food. With this is mind, I am worried about these reports on the cruise fare. Is it in any way like the RFC level of food? That would be upsetting. We have our first cruise scheduled in Nov and I was be really sad to always have that kind of food on our cruise.

ladyhawke---I don't think it anything could be as horrible as a RFC meal and we did have SOME good meals especially on the 1st and last night in Lumiere's and my meal in Animator's the first night was good. Mostly I think for me the selection was bland not always the food. Our one night in Parrot Cay the menu had all seafood entree's on it except 1 chicken breast (which I ordered, tried 1 bite and never touched again) and by the time we got our food it was almost 7:15 or so and to order something "made to order" would have taken much longer so I just ate 2 lava cakes and it was fine. I LOVED all of the apetizers and salads that I had and the desserts well mmmmmmmmm it was just the main course that I didn't rave about every night. Our waiter was very concerned but it was ok....it was just weird to not look forward to going to dinner like we have in the past on DCL and other lines. Honestly though I think it is heads and tails above RFC but has a LONG way to go before it's a NYC finest restaurant! I think topsiders was the biggest let down for me on a consistent basis and that was only for lunch it was a letdown.

Well...for y'all who don't love Disney cruises..THEN DON'T GO..

That's a really weak argument and I just hate to hear that comment on any board. People should feel open to vent their true opinions without the wrath of the "If you don't like it, then leave/sell/don't go" crowd. Your opinions are worth hearing, but the OP never said, "Tell me what you think I should do." Let's not forget we all have feelings.

The fact is DCL isn't for everyone and sometimes it's not the right cruise for every single trip. There are plenty of good things about it, but some of us feel there are also some negatives. Pretty common on most lines. Sometimes change is good.

I'll add in the customary positive smilie for y'all. :teeth:

Regarding food...
We've always been happy with the food and sometimes even amazed with the meals onboard. I'm vegetarian and I'm always thrilled when there are selections for me to eat that are much different than the old standbys = steamed vegetables, salad or veggie burgers. Bleh! DCL has always had such amazing selections for me and based on that I have always enjoyed the food.

But, being that I'm only able to eat about 10% of what's on the menu.....

Regarding overall appeal of DCL:
DH and I are childless and love DCL (#4 this coming Nov.), although we've never cruised any other line. I'm game for it, but hubby is not so we stick with DCL. We go back for many reasons (aside from the fact that I can't convince him to try another line): (1) The way we are treated/hospitality/attention to detail; (2) Variety of entertainment that we enjoy including movies, swimming, the spa, stage shows, live music, educational series (art of entertainment, etc.). We aren' t big drinkers or gamblers; (3) The cleanliness of the ship; (4) The Ports of Call because we haven't been to all of them yet; (5) We love Disney. Enough said.

We haven't had a bad experience (yet) BUT I can say that if we did have a particularly negative experience or if something happened to leave a bad taste in our mouth OR if we felt we didn't get our money's worth, we would try another cruise line or vacation for sure. Why waste money seeing if you have another bad experience? IMO, that's too much money to take a chance.

I agree....It's good for everyone to be informed of both positives and negatives. It would be terrible to have this completely idealistic idea of your cruise in mind if all you heard were the good. Some people are setting themselves up for a letdown. :(

I haven't gotten to read all of the posts, but I think I've read enough to respond. We are going on our first DCL (3 land - 4 day cruise) on July 29. My wife and I are 37 with 2 boys 4 and 7. We will be celebrating our 12 anniversary (8/1) with DCL. We like doing things as a couple and have done some nice trips over our last 11 anniversaries without the boys. We've done Vegas (Bellagio), Jamaica, 2 cruises, Hawaii, Playa del Carmen Mexico (Royal Hideaway), Caymens, etc. We even went to Florida and visited Disney World one year. We have had a lot of fun together so this year we decided to do something nice for the boys. When we first booked it we did not have a lot of high hopes for doing a lot of couples stuff (being very romantic) because we knew it was mostly geered towards kids (families). We look at it as a trip for the boys and if they are happy then we will adjust and be happy. I let them watch the DCL DVD that we received and they are very excidted so we are looking forward to it also. After reading some of the other post throught the board, we are more excited and looking forward to the family trip for a change. We are planning to send them to the club one evening and go to PALO and celebrate our anniversary, but other then that we are looking forward to the family gathering. If they want to go to the club during t he day we will send them otherwise, we are prepared to spend the entire time with them.
Personally, even though I have not been on the DCL before, we probably would not have picked it just to celebrate our anniversary (without the kids). We figured even if the kids did not bother us it would still be too many reminders to cause us to miss the boys back home.

I agree with the letdown issue...there have been plenty of events I've built up too much due to inflated praise and felt disappointed at the actual experience.
My first trip to WDW was the opposite however....it was very much sublime, and it was better than I had ever imagined (it was about two years ago--we had a two week trip for our first stay, and stayed in a few of their deluxe hotels-transferring so we could see the parks from a diff. vantage point on diff. days--what an incredible place!!!). I've been back several times since and always still love it, especially at our favorite hotels there. I think my expectations for Disney remain pretty high based on what I've experienced with Disney before. I am hoping the cruise compares to our incredible WDW trips!! :) So excited to find out...

TO TRAYCIE2201 -- Please don't let all these naysayers spoil your excitement. Let me explain our view as a family of the DCL experience.

Our first four day one was in 2000. First cruise for all of us -- husband, me and daughter. We no sooner walked off the ship and my husband booked another one for 2002 -- the 7-day Eastern. I was actually more excited about the extra days at sea than the ports.

After that cruise, I asked my husband if he wanted to do another cruise for a change -- absolutely not, he said. Why? We have all heard some unpleasant stories about other cruise line experiences. I know that some of them have more to offer, bigger ships, better dining, fancier digs, and YES, the almighty casino.

But we don't want any of that. The reason we love DCL so much is that NOTHING is expected of you. You are NOT expected to wear a tux or sequined gown. You are NOT expected to look a certain way or talk a certain way. You are NOT expected to be demure and proper at all times and respect everyone's "space". But best of all, you are NOT looked down upon for who you are.

I know MANY MANY couples who have travelled on DCL and have no children. We will continue on DCL even after our teenager daughter no longer wants to go. Here's why:

1. Staterooms -- they are bigger than most ships (not all, but most). They have a split bathroom -- which no other ship offers. Both times our room stewards were thoughtful, attentive and always remembered our names. My daughter was amazed when Jonathan would call down the hall -- Hi, Emily, how are you today.

2. Food -- Every day you can have your choice of the buffet, or two of three restaurants for breakfast or lunch. Dinner times are fun because you rotate to a different themed restaurant every night and your dining staff follows you. So by the second night, they always know what you like or don't like. Maybe we don't have high RCL or Norweigen or Queen Mary standards, but we have found the food to be amazing. Better than any fine dining I've gotten in expensive restaurants in my area! On Captain's night, they offered lobster tail and it was scrumpious. They have two midnight desert buffets which are not only beautiful to behold, but delicious. Both cruises afforded us amazing waiters and assistants and even the head server remembered our name every time he saw us on or off the ship!

3. Entertainment -- we found the entertainment on both of our previous cruises to be of Broadway quality. AND on our last cruise, we had two adult comedians who both had been on HBO previously. They did the variety show for family hour, but later invited you to join them in the bar for the "adult" version -- and they were side-splitting raunchy and funny. The stage shows are great and the talent priceless. They DO have many, many character appearances -- which are always noted in your daily Navigator. We saw characters on the ship ALL THE TIME. Plus they give you a character breakfast on the 7-day cruise.

4. Activities -- we were NEVER bored. DCL has some of the most amazing spa treatments and saunas that you have ever seen. We always get messages and sign up for the week with the Rainforest sauna, and on and on. They even offer messages on Castaway Cay in cabanas (we're doing that one next cruise). We took a galley tour and got to see all three kitchens and how food is moved from one restaurant to the other. ALSO, there are several cooking lectures, wine tasting, bridge tour, bingo every day (with great door prizes and cash prizes), exercise/jogging program (where you earn points to cash in later for souvenirs), meet the crew seminar, Who Wants to Be a Millionaire game show, a Newlywed Type game show for adults after hours, several piano bars and lounges just to relax and escape. PLUS, yyou could just spend a week walking around the ship deck by deck. It is a magnificent ship. All wood and brass and glass. Very regal for a "family" cruise. Some days we would order room service for breakfast (free) and just sit in our room and chill, then mosey up to the deck or the pool, get a drink, play bingo, walk around, see a movie, etc. There is ALWAYS something to do. You just need to read the Navigator and plan. We never got bored and always felt the cruise wasn't long enough. That's why we're so excited about the 14-day cruise next year.

5. Castaway Cay -- a truly beautiful tropical island. Not all other cruise lines have their own island. And right in the middle, they give you a barbeque lunch with CLOTH napkins. The food is amazing. We rented bikes and rode all around and toured the WWII landing strip that is still there, the adult beach and some of the island where the staff lives.

TOP MOST REASON -- the DCL experience, for us (maybe not for everyone), is everything we have ever wanted from a cruise. We are pampered, respected and treated like royalty and we love it all -- the characters, the kids, the families and the noise. I don't think I could stand a pompous uppity ship like QM2 or Norweigen Cruise Line or even RCL.

Plus, they have a killer sail away party on deck 9. They bring the floor over the pool and ALL the characters are there dressed in sailor garb and they always have a live band that begins playing at 4:30 and plays until 6:00. The ship's horn sounds "When you Wish Upon a Star" and bubbles flow from the stacks (instead of confetti). We always dance, with drinks in hand, and watch the Florida coast slip away. All the fisherman on the docks wave goodbye. (NOTE FOR FIRST TIMERS -- Be sure to be on the dock side of the ship when departing Castaway Cay. All the island staffers come out to wave goodbye with big Mickey Gloves on.)

So, I hope that this isn't toooooo long and boring -- but I hope it took away the edge for those of you who were looking forward to your first cruise. Go with an open mind and heart and just expect to be dazzled. And you'll have a good time.

I am a firm believer in giving the good news with the bad, not raising expectations too high. I believe if someone who was going to cruise on DCL were to read this thread, they would come out with varied opinions, but at least they would be prepared for the possibility of a cruise that is not perfect.

Did we love our cruise? Well, no. We had very rough weather and my husband was sick for half of it and I rocked for 3 weeks after the cruise was over! Truely, we were both grateful to get off the ship after 7 days.

I remember reading on these boards how you MUST cruise for 7 days, 3 and 4 days were not enough. Well, there you go! We were the rare couple that should have cruised for the 3 or 4! I know people try to be helpful and shed the best light on everything, but sometimes it is good to hear a different opinion.

We did enjoy our cruise. Many aspects if fact. The ship was beautiful, the CMs were great. We felt so special and cared for by these people. The shows were pretty good. The movies were pretty good. The food, well, was OK, but not great (except for Palo). The ports were pretty good (mainly for us because it meant the ship would stop rocking!).

The one thing that really surprised us both was that we really did not have many kiddos around us most of the time. For those of you thinking of cruising kidless and wanting a more adult atmosphere, don't avoid DCL for that reason. There were so many places that only allowed adults that we were very impressed. Of course we had late dining and LAPL rotation, so that helped I'm sure.

Anywhoo, I appreciate all honest opinions. We decided we would cruise again. If we got a great deal with DCL (on a shorter cruise ;) ) we would go with them again, or maybe we will try another line. I am shocked that my husband agreed to another cruise!

mkbow--it's great you are going in with that attitude! We went in that way as well telling our kids the ONLY time they HAD to go to the club is if we went to Palo (we did a brunch) other than that they could stay with us if they wanted to or swim or whatever. Well swimming was out because of the crowds so we were stuck trying to find things for them to do. 10, 9 and 5 are hard ages to have to try to do together since the 10 yr old would love to do trivia where the 5 year old would hate it. I'm looking at my Navigators from the week and here are some of the things you could do as a family if you didn't chose to sit at the gale force wind pool or watch Finding Nemo for the 50th time...

This is from Sunday Sea Day

9:30 am -Chip it golf tournament (only open to those 12 and over..for us that's out)

10:00 am - Family shuffleboard

10:15 am - Disney's art of entertaining (yeah like that would appeal to ANY of our kids)

10:30 am - Jackpot Bingo (been there lost that no thanks)

11:00 am - Disney Behind the Scenes - all about how a theme park attraction goes from dream to reality. (yawner for our kids especially the 5 year old)

11:30-11:50 - Character autograph session (if you were lucky enough to hit the line at 11 you might have a shot of getting an autograph)

1:00 - 2:00 - Port shopping presentation (I don't even want to sit through that and I'm a lot older than 5)

2:00 - Fun in the sun at the goofy pool (standing room only there)

2:00 - Disney's Art of Entertaining where you get to learn "fruit carving and mixology" (yet another "class" that doesnt interest kids)

2:15 - The Golden Mickey's Red Carpet Arrivals - (but this was tonights after dinner show and if we had gone in the day we may not have wanted to go at night and then what would we do?)

2:30- The Golden Mickeys - Same as above

2:30 - Ping Pong Tournament (for those 18 and older...yet again we can't do it)

2:30 - Mr. Toads Wild Race where only the first 16 teams get to participate the rest have to fight for a spot to hold on and watch.

2:30 - Stem to Stem wine tasting (not for my kids)

3:30 - Jewelry Bingo (see bingo above)

4:00 - Family Team Trivia - My 5 year old MIGHT like this for 5 min..tried it we left in about 2 min

4:00 - Hot shot bball contest - Must be 14 or older (left us out again)

4:45-5:00 - Latin Dancing Class - my kids said NO WAY am I learning to latin dance so that was out. We looked in..not too many kids

5:15-6:00 - Captains Reception

5:45-6:30 - Family Dance Party BUT we had early seating so we missed this

5:45 - Disney's Navigator Series:Magical Makeover 2003..YAWN

6:15 is the show for those with late seating

7:30 - you could enjoy cocktail music or relaxing piano stylings - YAWN

7:45 - Family Cabaret Showtime (but we had the Golden Mickeys Red Carpet at 8:15)

8:15-8:30 -Golden Mickey preparation and then the show

9:30-10:15 everything was for adults 18 and older

9:45 - 10:30 - Mickey Mania Game Show (which played the night before)

10:30 - 11:30 - Family Karaoke Uh ok..I can see my 5 year old singing karaoke in front of a bunch of strangers NOT.

The rest of the night was all for adults!

As you can see unless you have kids the perfect ages or they like the clubs or the pools there is NOT MUCH TO DO with your kids!

The movies today were Hidalgo which was pg-13 and didn't appeal to any of us
Brother Bear - Like we haven't seen that before and like we don't own it
The Alamo - which maybe my boys might have liked it having to do with Davy Crocket but dd wouldn't.

The tv movies were

Beauty and the beast
monster's inc
Lilo and stitch
Peter Pan
Fantasia 2000
The Black Cauldron
Dinosaur
The Jungle Book
----------------------------------
Mona Lisa Smile
Freaky Friday
Something's gotta give
Big Fish
School of Rock
The Cat in the Hat
Paycheck
Mona Lisa Smile.

This is why I complained that there was nothing to do! It just seemed to be so BORING during the day and after the show at night.

We are going on our 6th Disney cruise in October 2004 and going on the Panama Canal cruise next August. We have cruised other lines (Costa...you pay through the nose for everything) and Holland America to Alaska....HAL was a really beautiful ship (much smaller than the Magic due to having to service the smaller Alaskan ports and get through the glaciers) however, on the Alaska ship, the kids program stunk and therefore, there were lots of kids just roaming the halls for lack of anything to do. The majority of patrons were elderly (my husband called it the Ben Gay cruise) which I think is due alot to the itinary and they truly got annoyed with the kids. The artwork on HAL is fabulous with lots of antiques. The shows were just so-so and the food was great. We never have a problem with the Disney food but then we are not hard to please..as long as I don't have to cook it or clean up, it is fine with me. We tend to relax on vacation and very rarely ate at the buffets (not a buffet lover) and had lunch every day at Lumieres which we enjoyed. The one stop that we don't like is Castaway Cay..we usually stay on board and throw a load of laundry in...Lots of people love CC and lots don't. I love to sit on the verandah and read a book since I am not a beach person.

Is DCL perfect..no. But then again, neither was HAL. We enjoy DCL and will definitely keep cruising them but we may also try RCCL in the future.

The nice thing about these boards is that everyone's opinion is just as valuable as everyone elses and everyone has the right to post. Just because one person had a bad experience, doesn't mean that you will be disappointed. Forgot to post that ALASKA was AWESOME!!

I for one am especially appreciative of posters like Heidi who give a fair but balanced view. I have a tendency to develop unrealistic expectations of a trip so it's good to be prepared for what others have experienced that is below average..

I can warn my daughter not to expect to do much swimming due to crowds; realize food may be only so-so (which if I lost seven pounds would be okay with me :teeth: ) etc.

I've been on these boards for years and it seems as soon as someone gives a less than glowing report, people are aghast. It's Disney, not the diety.

(hey just noticed - i'm finally double digits woo hoo :jumping1:

Lots of people love CC and lots don't

Oh my gosh! I thought it was just me! I am not a beach person either and was a little under-impressed with CC. I guess after reading these boards I just expected too much. There are those expectations again

hydster - you really can't compare the death threats on the other board with the itty, bitty flames thrown here. Yea for the most part people only want to hear the good and skip the not so good. I also think that you have some unrealistic expectations for "family activities" when you have a 10yo and a 5yo (and that's not a big age difference) - whats interesting to one is not going to appeal to the other.

I have seen the enemy and he is us(paraphrased). With all of our glowing reviews, telling everyone who asks everything and telling everyone how great everything is, people are going to be leaving for the "cruise of a lifetime" and then be disapointed because they know everything that is going to happen and none of the cruise is going to "come to them" There's nothing to surprise and enchant. Take the most magical and postive experience that each of us has had on the cruise, and when we all tell that part of the "story" you get this grand, perfect, magical trip that cannot be replicated because it represents the best of the best and people will be let down. We've cruised several times and the first time was really the best experience we've had. We knew absolutly nothing. The only thing I wish that I had known was about the embarkation buffett so we wouldn't have eaten lunch before boarding and we would have boarded earlier.

But guess what, when people ask questions, I'll still supply answers. But I'll try not to set peoples expectations too high.

jrabbit--I don't remember posting that the Carnival board and this one were the same in the threat department...I pointed out that the Carnival faithful are in some ways like the Disney faithful in that DON'T SAY ANYTHING BAD ABOUT OUR SHIP! I don't think there is a vacation in the world no matter where you go or what you do that doesn't have something you wish you could change! My trips to Japan, Cancun, my many many cruises all taught me that. There is no such thing as a perfect vacation no matter how much you pay or what you do and I know that. I didn't feel my expectations of the trip were "extremely high" since we've cruised MANY times in the past. I did feel that with my cruises in the past this one was one that deserved to be in the lower part of my list. While it's true that it's hard to have activities that my kids and their ages would enjoy---we didn't seem to have these problems on the 2002 Wonder or on any other lines we've cruised and our kids have always been off in different age groups. It seemed this cruise was geared more to those with all their children older ie: the Magical Makeover 2003...my 10 year old and 5 year old could have cared less. If this was just something that happened on one of the days it wouldn't have been bad either but in looking at ALL of our navigators the "menu" of choices didn't change much and in MY opinion they had NOTHING to interest a 5 year old duirng the day if you couldn't be in the pool or they didn't like the club! For a line that supposedly caters to children they only seem to cater to children of a certain age group once again in MY opinion! I remember a thread not long ago about people being unhappy with the program for their son who was technically 18 but was still a senior in high school....I know EXACTLY how they felt as that is how I feel about it as well.

As for the 2nd part of your post I'm not sure I really understand what you are saying so I will just not comment on it so as not to get myself deeper into this thread .

Also this will be my last posting on this thread because it is now equal to beating a dead horse... I am unsubscribing to it...I've spent far too much time defending my position on here. I've voiced my opinion and some agree that I'm entitled to it and others tell me to leave and never come back!

Heidi (also like one poster giving the obligatory smile and wave)
