In NY, near White Plains, a 10-year old girl got up in the night, went into her parents bedroom and told them there was a strange man with two dogs in her room. They thought she had had a nightmare and sent her back to bed! She came in an half-hour later with the same story, and again they sent her back to bed. Only when they woke up the next day to dog tracks throughout their house did they realize they had been robbed!

I think they were very lucky that it was limited to robbery. But, I just can't understand. If my DD ever has come into our room with anything like a "monster under my bed," my DH and I get up and turn on lights to show her everything is okay. And, ever since the Elizabeth Smart case, if it was a "man" sighted, not an imaginary monster, I would be up in 1 second. Is it just me, or was the reaction of these parents a little off?

I just read this article in the paper like 10 minutes ago. I can't believe the parents didn't believe the child!

You're right, they should be glad that the crime was limited to robbery.

I too, would have been up immediately. At the very least, they should have had her stay in bed with them. I don't understand how many people take having their children for granted. You never no in this day and age. Always better to be safe then sorry in my opinion. They are soooo lucky they didn't wake to a robbed house and missing child.

I can't believe they didn't get up!! I also noticed that they didn't get up until 11:30am to notice all this!! I can't help but wonder if this child will trust her parents the next time she needs help with something:confused: Our home was burglarized Aug 1,2002 during the day and Ds9 still has trouble sleeping sometimes. He is scared someone will come in while we are sleeping:( (The young man that broke in was caught eventually and admitted he was creep. Due to our hard work we recovered half of the dvd's he took.:D )

OMG! That gives me chills. The dogs must have been really quiet. If either of our kids came in & told us that there was a man in their room, I would panic. Even if this had been a dream, that little girl was probably very frightened.

I remember once when DS was about 3 y/o, he came into our room and told us there was a dinosaur in his bed, rolling on it's back laughing. Well, of course we knew there wasn't, but we got up and took all the covers off of his bed, looked under his, bed, checked closets and so on. We did this just to make him feel comfortable & safe. Like it or not - That's our job.

I always walk my kids back to bed after a bad dream and retuck them in. I'd certainly get up to see if a man was in my house!! (we have 4 dogs, so the dog thing wouldn't have been unusal, lol) They didn't even get up until 11:30! I think a good sleeping in these days is 8:00am! LOL!

The kid is 10 years old.... you would think she would have been more adament.

My 8 year old would never have gone back to bed if he saw something like that.

Well, did you guys hear the story about that creepy 30 year old who recorded an audio tape of himself trying to get his 10 year old to smother his 4 year old brother in his sleep???

I heard that on NBC this morning and it just shocked me. Apparently, he was trying to give his 10 year old son a "subliminal message" to kill his little brother. No reason as to why he wanted this done. His wife found the audio tape in a file while cleaning one day.

This goes up there with that horrible story about the woman duct taping her son as a punishment, and he choked to death on his own vomit. What is this world coming to?? Why even have a child if you're going to do things like this?!

I was a "non-believed" child!!!
When I was 6 or so I told my mom I saw a man walk down our driveway, walk over the top of the car and climb into our hammock. My mom didn't believe me. I kept pestering her about it and she thought I was making it up. Low and behold when she finally did look, there he was in the hammock talking to himself...an escapee of a mental hospital!! There were footprints on the car and everything. The police came to bring him back to the hospital.

Gee, I wonder why I feel the need for validation as an adult...LOL!!

My 9yr old most likely wouldn't go back to bed either. However if the parents were "not so nice" about it the child may have been more afraid of them then an intruder. I just had the craziest thought. What if the parents somehow knew about this drifter? I'm not saying they did or accusing them or anything. My mind just runs through wierd scenarios sometimes. I really feel bad for the little girl.

I would of screamed bloody murder and refused to go back to my room. And my parents wouldnt have brushed me off like that. I can't believe that the parents told her to go back and didn't even check things out. That's absolutely crazy.

That's especially scary because White Plains is only a half hour from where I live.

My neighbors were robbed two years ago, and since then if I ever see a odd car on my street I get really suspicious (I live on a four-house dead end). Luckily I have a very close relationship with my neighbors, and if we ever get frieked out by anything we call each other.
