So, this is the first year DD has to make her own valentine box for school. We did this as a kid, so I knew it would only be a matter of time. Actually I don't mind and think it will be a fun project to work on with her.

So....she says she wants to make a purse. Tell me how would you suggest going about this. :confused3 . I've googled but havent come up with anything.

You could cut out cardboard into the shapes (like instead of cloth or leather) and tape them together. Cover with paint or paper. Find something around the house for a handle, a wire hanger with beads strung on it???

I am so glad DD is too old for that kind of stuff.

Any box will do. I've used all kind of things to cover them....foil, tissue, comics, valentines. Make a handle out of rope/ribbon/rolled tissue and glue it on before you cover the box. Make the hole for the valentines to go in before you cover it too. Then you can punch/cut it through and fold around it. We've used all kinds of things to decorate as well-candy, valentines, lace hearts. A glue stick works well unless you are using foil-use tape then. This year, Ds's box will be a drum-using an empty oatmeal box. We'll use sticker hearts to make the designs on the drum. Have fun!

omg that is the most ADORABLE idea!

you could get really fun with it...find the "base" (some sort of box)...punch holes in it...run ribbon, rope, or braided raffia through the holes for handles (I suggest 2 handles - just for "weight" issues) and knot it...then cover with a bunch of fabric scraps (like - example - a "patchwork" style bag...)

I'm trying to think what would be a decent "base" though...I like the oatmeal container idea - nice and sturdy...easy to cover, and you can reuse the lid and just put a hole in the top (it kinda looks like a 'bucket' style purse. heheh)

The oatmeal "bucket style" purse would work...cover with paper or fabric, add fringe or fur trim, etc. I also thought you could take a large cereal box, cut about half of the front section off and fold the back section over. Cut the back section in a triangle shape when you get it over the front...picture an envelope? Anyway, maybe glue a big jewel or button on for the closure and cut a slit either in front or on the top? The handle could be a wire hanger or pipe cleaners covered in fur or fringe or beads. I love the purse idea! Have fun! :)

i have seen cute little purses made out of cardboard. BUT NOW I CAN'T FIND THEM. I have looked on-line and everything. :headache: :badpc:

I saw one in a magazine made out a cereal box, the top was cut to make handles, and then it was covered with different color tissue paper.

Why not make a duct tape purse. Duct tape and other off brands comes in colors now and you could use red and white duct tape. Cut a cardboard pattern out, cover both sides in duct tape, glue on beads, pipecleaners, scrapbook art, glitter and so forth.

Thank you for your suggestions, I'll see if we can't post a picture of the finished product! I have a visualization in my head, just need to make it work. At one time I bought some little party favor purshe boxes and I'm hoping I still have one around and I can mimic that maybe out of a cereal box.
