Anyone else have this problem with family?

My inlaws thought we were "wasting out money", but as soon as they started going on free vacations and their friends bought, the family clammed up......

I wonder why

DH's uncle and his wife found out we bought into DVC about the time they were starting to plan a trip to Orlando. She said to the uncle, "We can just plan on staying at their time-share when we go" as if it was an empty condo just waiting for anyone to drop in whenever and for however long they wanted! I've stopped trying to explain certain things to them.

You guys either have some REALLY inconsiderate families or else you need to learn to say no!

I am a new owner, but it wont matter. We will go on vacations and sometimes offer points to people, but it is ALWAYS going to be when I want to, not just because I am asked. I love my siblings and family very much and we vacation some together now, but ALWAYS at each individual family's expense.

As far as covering extra expenses, I would pay ONLY if I were taking a niece or nephew with us (not the whole family) and I would hope that their parents would at least offer to help out (in which case I would make sure they just gave the child plenty of play money - not true needs money).

I consider us VERY close. Maybe it has to do with respecting boundaries.

No one thinks that our purchase was a mistake. After our great Grand Gathering in December, my DSis has treated us to an add-on (thank you, thank you, thank you) so that we wouldn't hesitate to invite her again! She didn't have to worry, I would have invited her, but it greatly eased DH's mind to know that she was willing to pull her weight for Family Gatherings.

Sometimes I feel bad that we didn't buy in '96 when it first caught our attention, but there's no time like the present to enjoy family and friends in WDW! Besides, we did 3 European cruises with assorted family members in the years from '96 to '03, and maybe those wouldn't have happened if we had the DVC.

PS. We are empty nesters and so far D(oldest)S and his family haven't been able to join us, but when they do, we will be completely happy with our DVC purchase.
