who is throwing their money away by staying on property.

Most of our extended family and friends prefer staying off property because they just think staying on property is too expensive (in their defense, most have more than 2 children and Disney does not have a ton of affordable options for families of 5 or more who are not DVC members). Instead, they prefer renting a home or condo off-site.

Part of this, in my experience, not only boils down to family size and budget but also vacation style. Most of our extended family and friends' Orlando vacations not only include Disney, but also, Universal, Sea World, the beach, etc. (the way they see it, if you're going to spend a lot of money flying your family to Florida, might as well pack in as much as possible). In contrast, we pretty much just do Disney (and go at a much slower pace overall).

Specifically, we view WDW as a resort that just happens to include theme parks and, along those lines, typically only spend mornings (and sometimes early afternoons and evenings) in the parks, while spending most of the afternoon at our resort (e.g., at the pool, etc.), followed by a nice, table service dinner. For our family, this provides a nice balance of entertainment and relaxation (and we enjoy the detached-from-reality feel that the Disney bubble provides).

When we tell most of our friends and relatives about our WDW vacation style, they think we're too focused on Disney, unncessarly spending too much time and money there, while missing out on everything else central Florida has to offer. While I understand their perspective, I've done Orlando vacations their way and personally don't find that style to be nearly as enjoyable or relaxing (the first time I finally bit the bullet and decided to stay on property, I was amazed how much more enjoyable and relaxing the vacation was and, since then, have never gone back).

That being said, I've pretty much given up on trying to "convert" any of them to our style because the minute I even suggest staying on property, their eyes either glaze over in disinterest or I get a lecture on how much money I'm wasting.

Yes and we even got married there 'gasp!'....although everyone seemed to have a great time when it was on our dime! LOL!!! First they hounded us for being adults and obsessed with the Mouse and then it was that our kids were too young for such extravagant vacations and now it's the simple fact that it's so expensive...they will always find something to complain about, but unless they are paying for our vacations, they shouldn't care. We go every year and absolutely love it, we still have time for other vacations and next year are even traveling through Europe....ending on the DCL Med b2b Transatlantic cruise! LOL!!!! Of course we know they shake their heads at us but we just tell them to foot the bill or get over it! HAHAHA!!

I live within an hour drive of various amusement parks with aquatic animals, great thrill rides, water parks, beaches, shopping, dining etc. I don't, however, live anywhere close to anything that provides the atmosphere Disney creates, which is why we make the effort to go to Florida. Makes no sense for me to go all the way to Florida to do what I can already do at home (though when Nintendo Land opens we'll have to check out Universal and HP land for once).

I've seen a bunch of these posts lately. Really, if what you are doing is not harming others, so what?

Let 'em judge.

Be Pooh.

Everyone has different ideas on what they want to do on vacation. It's okay, just different.

I also don't go commando at Disney. My daughter and I still really enjoy going there, taking it all in, sleeping in late in the morning and just enjoying a few rides, eating snacks, I like to have a beer or wine with lunch (can't do that at home, LOL)! My husband and son are a bit burned out on Disney, so we leave them at home more often than not now.

To my husband, an ideal vacation is going to our timeshare in Hawaii (right next to Aulani), working out, and relaxing on the beach or at the pool. So we do that every other year.

My in-laws would never pay to stay on property at Disney, and so they stayed in a house and also went to the beach one day. They also like to shop, so went to the outlet mall there. I personally hate shopping, so even don't care for the new Disney Springs, and don't ever care to go back now that it's basically a big mall now.

We all like to do different stuff, so I wouldn't even suggest to them to do anything different. Go do it your way & let them suffer, LOL!

The family members and few friends we tell about our WDW vacations about seem pleased when they hear we're going again, it's usually they who ask if we've got a new trip in the works. On the rare occasions we get a, 'What, going to Disney AGAIN?' response we remind them that they go to the same beach, usually the same condo the same week every year. Shuts them up every time. As for 'throwing money away' on a WDW resort, a listing of the benefits derived ends that line of discussion too.

Most people around here tend to stay on property at Disney unless they have family or an offsite timeshare in the area. At that most have more money than us and already belong to DVC or stay deluxe when they go, but they don't necessarily go as often as we've been able to manage. The only person I know who thinks I'm crazy for spending so much money on Disney is my husband. Coworkers and friends are always excited for me when we are planning another trip and want to hear all about it when we return. I have a couple siblings and parents I don't see very often who likely would have a lot to say if I spoke to them, but they tend to turn their noses up at everything we do because we have a little more than them and they think we are rich snobs because we do things like take a vacation, lol.

YES! I always tell those people, Disney is our beach. It's the only response that ever works.

I tell them that Disney transportation sells it for me. My kids are finally at the age where they can come and go separately from us. If we were to stay off property, we would not only need to get to and from the airport but also, to and from the parks. We would all have to come and go together.

Also, we now bring my mother with us so we would either have to drive her van down or rent a vehicle with a handicapped lift.

No one really says too much about my choice to stay onsite, and if they did I would put a stop to it. My sister stayed offsite several years ago, and when she returned she said she wished they were onsite. ANd then.....asked if we all wanted to go...and stay in her timeshare. I thanked her but said no, that I like the convenience of the resorts, and for my money seem to get more bang for my buck.

I think that there is no wrong way to vacation, and no one is a fool when making their choice in regards to destination, level of lodging, or in dining preferences. I have no tolerance for people who feel that their way is the only way.

On our trip, my in laws came to our room at AKL to see us. They were staying off site near downtown Disney. They also knew we received a pin code and an amazing deal for our room at only $250 a night. They kept talking about how their hotel was only $89 per night, had a free breakfast and they had more beds then us with two queens and a pull out couch for only 2 people. We were in a savannah view bunk bed room with our 5 and 3 year old so we had plenty of space and the kids loved the bunk beds. My niece told me that they said our room was very small. For us, it was about the experience of seeing animals outside our room, staying at this beautiful hotel, and just being in the Disney bubble all week. To them, it was well we paid less for a bigger room and free breakfast.

Everyone's lifestyle is different. They go on multiple trips a year as cheap as possible. This was our first big trip in 6 years and the kids first time to Disney so we were looking to create memories. They also kept telling us to rent a car to eat offsite at the Olive Garden. I said well I can eat at the Olive Garden at home, but only with Disney can we eat with Mickey Mouse. They would have died if they knew how much we paid for some of our meals, but seeing the happiness on my kids' faces made the price worth every penny.

I guess I'm one of those people that would think it's weird to go to WDW year after year. If you go other places and WDW then I can see it, but if WDW is all you do then I can't help but think your missing out in life. I don't mean to offend, but that's just my opinion. I'm taking my youngest back because he wants to go again. It's been 4 years. We have traveled all over the world. I can't imagine doing WDW year after and nothing else. Maybe I would understand if WDW was a reasonably priced vacation, but its very expensive IMHO. One thing I get is why people pay to stay onsite. If I'm going spend the money on WDW then I'm going for the whole experience. In my mind it's the only way to do it. I booked a week at the Beach Club. It may be our last trip. We have plans to go to Asia and Australia in the next 2 years. We've been all over Europe, and honestly my European trips were cheaper then my WDW trips.

We have done the 'travel the world' experience and loved it. However, today we are older and the ease of a known visit to WDW with its entertainment, comfort and convenience keeps drawing us back. Just trying to plan a visit to a new destination is daunting to me now. I'll leave Australia, Egypt and India to the next generation. I have been to Israel, Russia, The Netherlands, Denmark, France, Spain, Italy, Greece, Switzerland, Germany, England, Norway, Iceland, Tunisia, Estonia, Mexico, Portugal, Jamaica, Grand Cayman, The Dominican Republic, various other Caribbean islands on cruises, many states in the USA and all but one of the provinces of Canada. Now, I am ready to just go to WDW 2 - 3 times a year to escape the long, dark nights of winter in Canada. I guess that WDW is my 'beach' too.

Yes, some people think that I'm crazy. Maybe they are right.......but i'm having fun!

Why are you trying to convert them to your way?

[See first line in my signature]

They like it their way, you like it your way.

I see both sides, we do it on and off on a regular basis.

Some trips work better one way and some other ways based on a variety of factors for each trip.

I would just stop talking about it.

Yeah, I've given up and just accepted that some people are Disney and some aren't!
I LOVE Disney, and we find it so magical. I love being in the bubble so we always stay onsite & eat at Disney restaurants. We've travelled a lot and my kids play soccer all over the globe, but we always go back to WDW.

My daughters soccer team is playing in Disney in Jan & I was asking the other parents (today!) if they were planning on going or extending their stay - I heard: "nah, we prefer the beach" or "we've been before so, nope" and "we have SixFlags season passes so my kids are over theme parks"...I was speechless LOL!

And one time, I finally convinced my sister & her family to come with us. She brought her 4 kids, we also had 4 then and I could just imagine the cousins having the best time ever!
I booked us at the Poly & we stayed 8 days over Thanksgiving. I planned everything to the T, really thought it out & booked us awesome extras. A real "trip of a lifetime" type deal.
She came home & complained to our extended family - who have never been -that it was such a waste of money (and specifics on prices!) & how boring Disney was, there weren't even real roller coasters, etc etc. UGH Now they all think we are crazy, so we pretty much hide any upcoming Disney trips from the family, and then refuse to discuss it when we get back.
They prefer Casinos and we prefer Disney. It is what it is!

The only way someone is missing out in life is if they want to travel to those places and then do not. I have some dear friends who almost never leave the neighborhood on their vacation. We live in a lake community, and he grew u here. They have every water toy imaginable, and spend their vacation dollars on water craft. For them, spending the day on the water is the best time ever, and I respect that. If I go out on the lake once a year, I'm good. I do not think they are missing out on anything, and they do not think I'm nuts when I want to get on a plane to go places. This family has such a close relationship with each other, and every weekend in the Summer they cement it even closer. After work in the evening they are out on our gorgeous lake, and come WInter.....the snow machines and ice fishing gear appear, and they are together there again.

For my family, WDW is reasonably priced. WE know what we are paying for, and we get what we pay for, and leave without buyers remorse. I have vacationed elsewhere, and have enjoyed those trips, but while you anticipate your Asia and Australia vacations, I would be a ball of anxiety. What is an adventure for you would not be for me, and while I would enjoy stories of your travels, I have absolutely no desire to take them myself. I'm not wrong, and I do not miss out. I just want different experiences than you do.

I do think that while you did not mean to offend, your comments are the comments that many of us are talking about in this thread. WDW is a vacation destination you do not understand as a vacation preference, because you tend to vacation differently, so those who choose not to expand their horizons must be missing out on experiences that they should desire. What you and so many other people do not recognize is that just because we can go elsewhere doesn't mean that we should do so. I think that no matter the tone, when people feel their choices are superior to those whose choices are different, it is offensive and rude. It is the undertone from those people that most of us resent.

LOL! And I cringe if I spend more than what my "free" wine would cost at the casino. WE are all different!

I'm sure my extended family thinks I'm foolish, but I don't care. I don't talk about my trips. But they talk about their trips....Vegas everytime. :rotfl: I guess we're just creatures of habit in my family.

Thank you for articulating what I just couldn't find the words for. I so agree! :thumbsup2
