I was awakened by the Federal Express man this morning. I was really excited, but surprised. I have never received such an enormous package in my entire life! This box was huge! (It also contained a DVC backpack!)

Then I started reading and becoming

more
and more
and more

CONFUSED!

Then panic settled in. I have been having second thoughts all day because I was incredibly overwhelmed. Similar experiences? I guess you all followed through? I don't know why I am going through this. Just so much information to digest--more than I thought it required.

In many ways I was excited to receive it (had been looking forward to it and anxious to receive) but for some reason it was a just a little much and I am quite exhausted.

Is this a common experience?

I did 10 years ago when we bought Old Key West, but got over it as soon as we started using our points. It's definitely worth the investment in my opinion. Our daughter just traded off to London, England and had the time of her life. We have given our daughters vacations for most of their adult lifetime and it was definitely worth the small price of a panic attack! Relax and enjoy it. The hotel rooms have more then doubled in price since we bought ten years ago so to us it definitely is a bargain. Even the maintenance fee expense is less then renting the size room we would need for our family at Disney these days. Good luck and enjoy your "Light reading" this summer! : )

I know what you mean..!!
It's good to read it all, of course, but when we bought in 1992, we had the family lawyer look it all over for us, just to alert us to any "traps" that might befall the unwary.

I got the same package...twice in the last 3 years!! Unlike you I never panicked.

Just sign and start having fun- that's what I did.

I doubt you will find any owner who regrets their first and all other purchases.

good luck and have fun

Wow, I know this sounds bad, but I was actually glad to see your post! I just got my package yesterday and I read it most of last night ...

I got a little freaked out too....

My DH and I go to Disney about 5 times a year and we plan to keep going. I was nervous reading some of the bad posts, concerned about the lack of housekeeping that we have become accustomed to as cash paying guests, the worry whether we will be able to get rooms on our regular trip dates (always Oct for Food & Wine Festival and beg of December) the waitlist concerns and this whole banking points thing (only being able to bank 100% at 6 mos out and no ability to bank any points under 2 mos. These were some things that the rep failed to mention.....

but overall, it seems DVC members are happy. My DH and I will be discussing this big time tonight!

You are not alone! I think it is a little unnervibg for anyone to spend a large chuck of $$ and not be concerned...

I did, but not after receiving a package in the mail. We bought onsite, and after we signed our life away, we walked out and panic set in. "what did we just do?" I was almost hyperventilating. I was nervous wreck that day in the MK. I didn't know if I was scared, or excited. I got over it when I started talking to a family on Splash mountain (the logs were backed up) I told them we just bought, and my excitement came out then. They were going to look into it after hearing me go on andon! LOL

You will be fine, I am looking forward to our first trip "home" and then I am sure we will be glad we bought!

We got our welcome kit last night, and I too read until late in the evening and went into a panic. Didn't tell DH that. Anyway...

I woke up throughout the night worrying. I found myself trying to understand the banking, borrowing, Use Year, and reservations system at 2:00 AM while laying in the bed! Luckily, I put a post on the board this morning and got the answers to my questions and all is well on that front :)

I am still a little nervous about whether we chose the right Home Resort or not (we are BCV owners), but I figure if we found out we like another resort better, we will buy in there later. Seems like everyone on these boards owns more than one contract ;) Already planted that idea in DH head!

Anyway, I am sure we will both be very glad we made this decision for ourselves, to join the DVC. And after our first official trip as members, I know we will! Be mellow. All will be well. Talking to you and myself :p

When we bought at OKW in '92, NH wasn't registered yet, so we had to go to WDW to sign up. DW arrived on Friday and did her signing, but I was delayed on a business trip until late evening. Our guide arranged for us to stay as planned and finish signing in the morning.

I didn't have my panic attack the next morning... instead I lay awake the night before worrying about it! :earseek: I finally got to sleep around 5am, and spent a bleary but happy day after signing up. :o

I remember getting that package way back in 1992. We didn't exactly panic, but it did seem a bit overwhelming. Then at work a few weeks later, my friend in Payroll told me that Disney had just called, checking on my salary information.....so I knew we were in the homestretch. There's been no looking back.....and NO regrets! :p

Just wanted to say that I am on the waitlist for points at BCV for February Use Year, so if any of you that are worried have a February Use Year and were buying at BCV..... Its a very, very bad idea to buy, I think you should cancel! Everyone else..... you won't regret your decision one bit!

I am really glad to hear I am not alone in this.

I spent most of last night (until 4 am) calculating points in my head, figuring out banking, comparing upcoming costs to previous years.) It's not out of my system yet.

I did realize though that last year I spend about 2,000 on hotel room alone, so I am trying to think of this now as a vacation savings account that I am paying into...sort of like lay away purchase.

I also have student loands, my son attends private school, and, of course, his college is a concern, so I am sort of stressing!!

I can understand & appreciate your anxiety. If you have any questions, be sure to ask DVC before signing. When we went to the original closing years ago, Disney would not let us sign any papers until we understood what we were signing. When we added on, we were sent the package of papers to sign. I liked all the little icons for where we sign, where the notary signs, etc. It will be ok - relax :)!

yes - the panic - there were more pieces of paper to sign than when I did the mortgage of my condo - but Disney wants everything documented - it is for your protection as well as theirs

besides it is kind of fun to sign where the Mouse is.....

My brother who has lost his job by-the-way - I asked him how he felt about my selling part of my points to help him and his family - his answer = "NO WAY". Now I did sell by VB points - but everyone only went there once and we all decided that we preferred the panhandle better - so I found a timeshare on the panhandle a whole lot cheaper.

He probably values his family time at WDW more than I do. I am the member - he is the associate.

My advice is : sign the paperwork and send it back ASAP!

I got mine 2 1/2 weeks ago and worked myself up into a lather for a full two weeks. I finally came to the conclusion that I had invested way too much energy stressing and obsessing about this decision.

I FedEx-ed my signed packet back last Friday. :Pinkbounc

I am very cool with my decision now, and eagerly awaiting our first trip "home" to BCV in May 2004.

Good luck to you!

You know this is very, very true and should be a great comfort to all the folks who seem to come to this MB with second thoughts about purchasing. I can't remember anyone purchasing and then coming back in a month's time saying that they had made the mistake of their life. Maybe those that feel like they made a mistake just don't come to this MB; but I would think if I had felt like I made a mistake I'd be posting all over here blaming everyone for giving me bad advice ;) .

I know it took me probably two years lurking here and asking questions, etc. before I took the plunge and I am very excited about being a member of DVC and can't wait for that first trip home next April.

Okay, let say worst case scenario that I sign and I have a nervous breakdown. Can I easily sell before it is paid off? Even with a high balance?

I am just exploring all possibilities.

Stop panicking and sign already! It's good to know that you have an "out" in a worst case scenario but trying to predict the future (ie if resales will be high enough for you to break even upon selling it or if you may lose a few hundred $$) is just going to make you crazy and take away from valuable vacation planning time.

If you are spending $2,000/year on vacations ANYWAY then you might as well put it into something that will be worth something when the vacation is over, and by the time the loan is paid off, that $2,000 will be more like $600 (not adjusting for inflation). That's the BEST part!

You would likely be able to re-coup most, if not all of your money if you were to sell within the next several years (my opinion only).
Remember that DVC gives you 10 or 15 days after you sign to back out of the deal. I would bet that they would let you back out up until closing.

Don't sweat it. If you are a Disney nut, and can afford DVC, you will love it!

Good luck...

I know. I am a Disney nut, as my title attests to, but realistically I can't afford it. I can't even afford all the vacations that I have taken in the last year. I'm afraid I'll get sick, lose my job, have a nervous breakdown or something of that sort.

I know people spend a lot on vacations. I just feel that I am being very extravagant doing this with college for my son being only a few years away and his private school payments and all. I am afraid if I don't do it now, I will kick myself when the price goes up to $89 per point permanentally and then to $94, and then to $99, etc.

That's why I am sort of just hemming and not really hawing.:p

Wow, this really changes my opinion. If you are having these kind of second thoughts perhaps you ought to back out especially in light of the fact you have a son to put thru college. You should never buy into something like this unless you can afford it; especially in this day and time with the job market the way it is. I know I would never have been able to do something like this while I was putting my two kids thru college - it has only been after they both graduated and I'm approaching retirement that I could afford it. I'm sorry for my earlier post when I encouraged you to join - I would never want to encourage anyone to join something like this if they can't afford it.
