Anyone else had issues with Visitor Toll Pass?

Hello
We used VTP in the middle of September and everything during the trip went fine. After I returned the pass in the designated box at MCO, I looked online and saw I had a toll that was 2 hours after I returned the car and the pass. I have since called the VTP number numerous times and emailed them as well to get my overcharge refunded. No response and no refund after explaining the problem multiple times.

Has anyone else had this problem with them?

Did you delete the car rental from your account? If not, it’s likely charging your account via pay by plate.

I believe if you use VTP you actually have a transponder to use and the system does not use the license plate.

I "ended" the trip at 2pm that day. The charge occurred at 3:08pm because the VTP didn't pick up the pass from the box until 3:54pm and the car was rented again before it was taken off my account.

Definitely sounds like a screwup on their part.

I have used them multiple times. I never had an issue.

Based on that it sounds like the rental company is on the hook to pay the bill.

Was debating using VTP for an upcoming trip. To clarify, once you return your car, you drop off the VTP in the drop box. What else do you have to do in the app after that?

We have had an issue. They charged us once for what was reasonable but then we had a second larger charge for all kinds of tolls we did not incur. Some for the exact same time period as the first charges. After much time trying to contact and escalating we ultimately asked the cc company to contest the charge. VTP was not interested in fixing the issue.

What do you mean they "weren't interested?" You should have a list of times/tolls.

We were originally charged with the correct tolls and times. Then a week later we received a bill for much more that had MANY tolls and times listed that were incorrect. Some overlapped with the original time period. Many were past when we “ended” our trip. After many calls, escalations and emails we were told we entered the license plate number into the app incorrectly. No proof of that was given and we did not have proof but no one can explain how the initial bill was correct or how we had overlapping charges for two different places at once. They also could not explain how two different vehicles with Tennessee plates (as our rental car) did, with only one number transposed happened to be in the Orlando area for the same time period.

Someone obviously attributed the 2nd set of charges to our trip but after disputing with VTP we were told we had no proof the charges were incorrect. Our cc company did understand.

I recommend just signing up for a regular (not visitor) Sunpass. I did this years ago and they sent me a transponder with suction cups which I bring along whenever we visit FL and stick on the rental car windshield. The tolls just get charged to my account and there is nothing to pick up, nothing to drop off, and no need to enter a license plate or do anything with an app.

Boy that sucks. But in fairness to VTP, someone has to be responsible for the error, and the error wasn't VTP's. I'm not sure why you'd expect them to make you whole when it was your mistake. Your taking it up with the tolling authority would've been the right thing to do; they may have seen and agreed with the circumstantial evidence.

I had great service from VTP when I had two charges from the rental company when I had a VTP; they took it up with the rental car company, AFTER they credited me.

VTP is owned and operated by CFX (Central FL Expressway Authority) which is the tolling authority.

Then it should have been a lot easier to contest this with the Authority.

I missed something. What did the PP do "wrong" that would have justified wrong tolls? It was CLAIMED they entered the license plate wrong, with no proof. AND they received a bill that was 100% theirs. So how do they receive one bill correctly, then a second false one?

You don’t have to do anything, but if you dropped off the car earlier than you had planned to, you can update the end time in the app. That might decrease the chances of the car being rented out again and driven through a toll booth before your account is cancelled.
