Anyone else fearing the Christmas menu this year?

I'm going to my sister's for Christmas Eve for a small get-together. There will just be four or five people for gifts, appetizers and socializing. However, my sister is not only a lazy cook, but a horrible one. I'll never forget the night we had "quesadillas" at her place. Here is her recipe (which she actually invented herself! Can you believe it? ;) She's very proud of it)):

Take one flour tortilla and one slice of Kraft processed Singles.
Lay cheese on top of tortilla. Roll. Microwave.
Fiesta!
:crazy2:

I hope whatever she's serving this year comes out of a box. I think I'll eat BEFORE I get there. ;)

Why don't you bring some appetizers so that way you will know you have something good to eat. We always take stuff when we go to other people's homes to pitch in.

Thats what I would do too since I also usually take something to pitch-in and you know something will be really yummy!

One of our friend's mother is a horrid cook. We love her so much, but (bless her heart) she can't boil water. When she has a party, EVERYONE brings food. We all take some of hers, but it all ends up in the trash when she isn't looking. No one has ever let on. She is just too dear to ever hurt her feelings.

Sadly, she just got some bad news about her fight with cancer a few days ago. We hope to have her here for Christmas again this year, but it is in God's hands. :sad1:

So she can't cook, big deal. Eat before you go over and don't pile your plate high while you are there.

I assume that your main purpose in going over there is not to fill up on the food, so I don't see what the big deal is.

Nice to see you have such a great sense of humor. Thanks for stopping by.

I would love to. Unfortunately, I've been relegated to bringing the wine. I'm bringing a LOT of wine. ;)

My sister is not only an iffy cook, but she has so many allergies in her family (beef, peanuts, wheat and dairy), dinner can be kind of interesting. I plan for weeks when I do Thanksgiving, but she's still planning on what to make for dinner that morning. I'll still have a great time on Christmas, just not so excited about the food.

We go to my inlaws for Christmas Eve. She's an awesome cook, so we'll get our holiday meal fix there.

Wow, seriously?! I am the first to acknowledge that I am a horrible cook. I've tried but no dice. I stick to a few simple recipes when I entertain, or it is potluck.

I would be horrified and highly offended if one of my family members posted something like this on a message board!

Instead of making fun of her, why not help out. Offer to bring a dish or two. Offer to show her how to make one of your specialties that can be served at the party.

It is the Holiday Season - Good Will to All - etc, etc. So I hope you reconsider your attitude before the party. Happy Holiday!

Yes, and I can see how, considering I posted her name, address, and a photo of her. Seriously? :confused3 This is an anonymous board where people come to vent and sometimes make fun of family situations. I suppose I'm the first in history to do that? Exactly how many Mother-In-Law posts do we have here a week?

Seriously people, lighten up. What happened to the people who had a sense of humor on this board?

Yes, I will go to her party with the wine she asked me to bring. No, I will not bring food because she asked me not to. Yes, I will be polite and take a small portion of her food that I will pick at. Yes, I will eat before I go. No, I will not say anything to her or anyone else about how horrible her food is at the party.

Fa la la la la, good peace toward men, and all that stuff.

It wouldn't be funny if the sister had really tried a recipe with more than 2 ingredients. Sorry, but the quesadilla described is something a 2nd grader would make.

If the had attempted something with multiple ingredients or steps, like lasagna, roast chicken dinner, and just burnt it, I don't think anyone would laugh. At least she would have made an effort.

Look, I'm horrible at sewing, so I send out any work to a seamstress. Same thing with cooking. You don't have to be a good cook to provide takeout, or make a reservation for a group dinner, etc, or just warm up pre-made food.

It's the effort that was lacking.

:rotfl: This entire thread is cracking me up! It's as if people are close, personal friends with the OP's sister.

OP, I feel your pain. My sister is a horrific cook, too. She's famous for putting Kraft singles on everything. :lmao: Her best two dishes were the cheesy home fries (potatoes) with corn flakes on top. She didn't have corn flakes so she put Frosted Flakes on it.

Her other one, which we were all rolling over, was her pasts salad. It called for dried cranberries. She couldn't find them in the store, so she bought GRANOLA with dried cranberries in it, and added that to the pasta salad.

We all openly mock her to her face (with love, of course :lovestruc ) and she takes it really well, so it's all good. She jokes that she does it on purpose so no one will ask her to bring a dish anymore. It's working!

Those both sound horrific. Thanks for sharing them. I'm glad to hear I'm not alone!!! :lmao:
