Anyone else been car shopping lately?

Went to a Chevy dealership and was snooping around looking for either a new truck or to upgrade my Vette to a new C6. Their lot was jammed with new inventory. For as bad and as gloomy as the press makes them sound. These folks weren’t willing to deal one bit on either one. And I wasn’t looking for huge discounts or anything…they just weren’t budging on their price and I couldn’t even get them to match the EDMUND’s numbers.

Kinda has me wondering if they’re sabotaging their sales on purpose to get the bailout….? :confused3
 
We bought a new volvo sedan a few weeks ago. Paid about $12,000 less than the edmunds FMV. Yet our friends couldn't get the Honda dealership to go down more than 10% off retail on a car they looked at. Maybe the "luxury" brands are being more realistic?
 
We bought a Nissan Titan and the lot was pretty empty. They said they are keeping their inventory low with the economy. They had great deal as they had a ton of rebates and low APR rate for 2008 vehicles. They couldn't find the 2008 that we wanted and offered us the same deal for a 2009.
 
I just got a new (well, new to me) car a month ago and was able to get a decent price on it -- it's a 2008 Pontiac G6 GT and we got WAY more than we expected for the trade-in (2002 Grand Am GT with ten tons of options) AND got them to throw in GM certification and super-dark window tinting for no additional cost. I don't know if it helped at all that my family's a repeat customer of this dealership or what, but overall it was quite a nice experience.

Hmmm... interesting. I just bought a Volvo XC90 a few weeks ago. We got a great deal on it! I didn't technically "need" a new car now, but I thought I should take advantage when there was such a good deal.
 
We got a good deal on our (new but last year's model) 2008 Saturn Outlook in the beginning of November 2008.

Base price was $31,000.

With our trade in and dicounts we paid $19,999.

The dealers are ready to deal.

DH did the haggling. When making the deal with trade in and dicounts the Outlook was priceing out a little over $21,500 out the door. DH told him to do better that we did not want to pay more than $20,000 out the door.
The salesman talked to his boss and came back. The salesman said they could not reduce the price of the Outlook but would give us more money on the trade in. Which was a 2004 Chevy van with over 100,000 ( I think it was about 120,00) miles on it.

The dealership got a sale and we got a new Saturn Outlook.

I don't think it's the car dealerships that get the bailout, but the automakers themselves. If you're not seeing the price you want just move on to the next dealership.

Definately! Our local dealers won't deal. We've know several people that moved on to other dealerships that were willing to make a sale.
 
My brother got a great deal on a 2008 Impala.

Agree with the others, you need to go to a dealership where they want to sell cars. Some places are just so arrogant and rude on normal days. I can imagine they are much worse because of the current situation.
 
I just leased a 2009 Nissan Altima and our local dealership was giving $5000 cash back so I used that toward the purchase, a pretty good deal I thought.
 
Dealerships have nothing to do with the bailout, so that's not the reason. In our experience, some dealerships will deal and others won't so if we're not liking what we find at one we just move on to another (easy enough to do in this area - it seems like there's a dealership on every corner!)
